Kevin can Wait changing its show premise wouldn't shock me as shows like Spin City & Just Shoot Me changed directions. In the case of each one , both shows was supposed to focus as well on the home lives of the main characters . Instead episodes in , the networks behind both realized ...the best interesting plots is the work place. And both sitcoms went on to last a number of seasons after dropping the home life.

I didn't realize that about Just Shoot Me. It was such a great workplace comedy that I assumed that was the premise from the beginning.

Why don't they just recast the wife? Can we no longer pragmatically suspend disbelief?

Maybe with Leah Remini as a series regular they want to take the show in a different direction. Perhaps as a buddy cop show, like Lucifer, or Bones before that.
I could even see Kevin Gable being called back from retirement permanently and rejoining the police force.
