There really wasn't anything in the article suggest that's what they're doing. Sounds like there were internal issues about the show's direction that had nothing to do with critics. Also, it sounds like ABC isn't happy with the ratings. When that happens, some retooling is almost a given (well, either that or cancellation). As far as I know there hasn't been any pressure from critics on Sleepy Hollow, but it's undergone some retooling of its tone and direction a couple of times.

Who exactly are these people who 'count'?

I ask because I don't ever really recall a review that praised the series for strong characterization, good plotting, etc. Yes, people fawn over it, but they do the same of Twilight.

I don't deny that it's a commercial success, but creatively it's a limp melodrama
