Default ‘Echo’: ‘Hawkeye’ Spinoff Series To Debut Under New Marvel Spotlight Banner That

Marvel is trying a different approach with their Echo series.

    https://deadline.com/2023/11/echo-ma...er-1235593396/

It will debut a new spotlight line, with a different approach to continuity.

Essentially, the new sub-category of Marvel is a branding for standalone fare, versus series and movies that connect to the greater Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The sub-category gets its name from an anthology comic book series first introduced by Marvel in 1971, which featured new characters that readers didn’t have to fully commit to over several issues.

The news was announced at a Friday-night screening of the first two episodes at The District at Choctaw Casinos & Resorts in Durant, Okla. as part of a larger Choctaw Day celebration.
This may be a good idea to signal that a project is accessible.

It could be argued that this is similar to Netflix's Defenders series, set in the Marvel U but separate. Although those series were interconnected, and didn't feature any actors from other Marvel projects.

There may also be identity politics pushback that Marvel's advertising that a series about a disabled indigenous woman is inessential.

I think it's healthy for the Marvel Cinematic Universe to highlight that a project is within that world, but not really part of the storyline for the big bad who is going to take multiple Avengers films to defeat.
    Sincerely,
    Thomas Mets

Why can't they stay true to the comics? She is supposed to be able to speak so well that people don't know she's deaf and has two legs. And where's the handprint painted on her face?

Because it's not the comics. If she speaks so well that nobody knows she's deaf, then what's the point? Also, the actress has one leg.

And there's already an Echo thread -- can a mod combine this thread with the other one?

This isn't about the Echo series. It's about the Marvel Spotlight banner.

They were looking for an actress who was Native American and deaf. It's impressive that they were able to find someone in the right age range who was good enough to carry the series.

It would be a bad decision to reject her because of a further disability.

As for other changes, part of it may be what works in comics versus what works in movies/ TV. In TV, it may not be telegenic to show a deaf person who speaks so well people don't know she's deaf.

It's a comic book adaption. It should adhere to the comics. Hollywood producers thinking they can do better than the comics is why the MCU is in shambles.

The point is that's who the character is.

    And the character does not.

Why deaf? It's acting and an important part of the character is that even though she is deaf, she can speak like she isn't. Marvel should hire whoever can best play the role. And that role requires speaking. It's as stupid as casting an actual blind guy to play Daredevil.

Again, that's a huge part of the character.

This show was supposed to tie into Daredevil Born Again. But with that show being completely retooled, I think they're aignaling it won't necessarily matter.
They've sunk a lot or money into DD already, thry dorn want people skipping it if they don't like Echo.

As for adapting the character, she didn't have her photographic reflex ability in Hawkeye. If anything, her only notable power seemed to be a cyber leg.

But the MCU also made "Taskmaster"a brunette female (mostly mutr) cyborg who debuted shortly before. Leaving Echo with basically nothing to stand out.

Those same producers, Kevin Feige in particular, are responsible for the MCU becoming the most successful movie franchise of all time. They didn’t do that by religiously adhering to the comics. They made plenty of changes some of which worked better than the comics and were then incorporated into the comics.

I think this boils down to the fact that the word "should" is up for interpretation. Same with "adaptation" - it doesn't mean "strictly adhere to." For me, the D+ Echo was a fair adaptation. And "Hollywood producers" did a pretty good job with the MCU through "Endgame" so I don't think that explains the current problem.
