Blade Appreciation 2018

It's a fun issue and the reveal is amazing but if you're expecting a Blade comic you are going to be disappointed. This was a supersized $8 issue for Avengers 700.

There as the main Avengrs story. Than a Ghost Rider Odin story. Than a spoilers:

end of spoilers. Last we get the Blade part. It's a cool set up I wish Bleeding Cool hadn't spoiled it for me. I'll give you a brief summary

spoilers:

We see Wasp flying. She's talking to someone through an ear piece. They ask if she's located the target. She says not yet, but she's been spotted she's being chased by bats. The person she's talking to tells her to abort, but she refuses. She makes it into the castle. She's spotted by Vampires. They sound the alarms. Wasp starts zapping them and flying around. We learn this is Dracula's castle. We see Wasp fly into a cell. She's found who she is looking for. BLADE. He's chained up and in bad shape. She asks if he wants to join the Avengers. He says, "get me my swords." She replies, "good answer."

Remember this was an Avengers comic, but it was a great twist at the end.


I guess we are back to bald Blade with a new tat on the side of his head.

he's never been an Avenger. Supposedly Brevoort wanted him to be on the team years ago when he was at the height of his popularity but he got shut down.



In Uncanny Avengers (it was a weird pseudo Avengers & Z-men team no one really remembers) he popped up with some other magical heroes.


Mojo created the team to fight the heroes. I think they were mind controlled or something. They were called the Avengers of the Supernatural

only lasted two issues wasn't really a team. I'm honestly not even sure if that was the real Blade and not just some fake (he turned into a Bat and wanted to bite people). Only got a few panels but wasn't written like Blade at all.

I miss the trench coat, but I love his inclusion in these events. It also seemed like a missed opportunity that Blade was never involved in the mythological stuff in marvel since it's so adjacent to horror.

Blade usually removes the trench coat when he gets serious these days outside of that 2012 anime

If Jane Foster can wear hers, he can wear his! The sleeveless kevlar look with the lighting bolts/head tattoos is supposed to be his more modern look since MI:13. I just never liked it all that much.

He's done it a bit...that Falcon series, as Ronin in Mighty Avengers, and in Spirits of Vengeance come to mind.

Also I was advised to check out Jason Aaron's Thor run if I wanted the context for this event.
