DC had a lot of funny animal comics in the '40s and '50s. The latter day Captain Carrot sort of built on that tradition. While the internet has some info on Captain Carrot, the classic funny animals don't seem to get as much coverage.

This page gives a quick overview of the titles that featured funny animals. Notable DC characters were Peter Panda, Peter Porkchops, Nutsy Squirrel, the Three Mouseketeers, the Fox and the Crow, Flippity and Flop, and Dodo and the Frog.

Sheldon Mayer did a lot in creating these characters. Otto Feuer was a classic DC funny animal artist (who had also worked in animation) and never gets his due.

Fawcett also had its own funny animals (featured in FUNNY ANIMALS), with Hoppy the Marvel Bunny being the best known.

I wasn't trying to do a comprehensive list, but I should mention Super Turtle--Henry Boltinoff's Terrapin of Tomorrow, who was featured in half page or one page gag strips in all the DC comics back in the day.

Adventure animals are in a grey area. Some were funnier than others. Wonder Dog of the Super Friends is about as funny as Scooby Doo. But Rex the Wonder Dog was very serious. Yet, Detective Chimp was the back-up strip for Rex and I would say that Bobo straddles the line between adventure and humour.

Then there's Angel and the Ape--drawn by the great humour artist Bob Oksner. A pin-up humour detective animal confection.
