Default So, is Carol Danvers now officially Marvel's "Wonder Woman"?

For the longest time, Marvel didn't have a flagship female character the way DC comics did with Wonder Woman.Through the nineties it seemed Storm was the closet thing marvel had. With Carol getting a movie all her own, do you consider her to be 616's leading lady??

P.S. Could someone put question marks in thread title?

Marvel does not now nor will they ever have a Wonder Woman.

Wonder Woman and Lois Lane are the two most iconic females in all of superhero comics and no other female even comes within 5% of them (if you go outside superhero comics then Betty, Veronica, and Minnie Mouse are on the list and still above anyone from Marvel).

The most iconic female Marvel has is Black Widow thanks to the ScarJo movie version. Mystique is probably second at this point because she's played by Katniss Everdeen. If Marvel Studio's hits a home run with the casting of Carol and her first appearance (probably in GoTG 2) is amazing and her movie is amazing then maybe she supplants ScarJo Widow but she still won't even be 5% of Wonder Woman. Seriously WW is up there with Superman, Batman, and Spiderman in terms of icon status and her name has become an adjective because of the character. The Wonder Woman movie could flop utterly and she'd still be far more iconic than any Marvel female.

.... I suppose Carol might as well be; that's pretty much what the subtext of fan-culture reactions have been.
Marvel could have been promoting the heck out of Storm, especially in the aftermath of the X-Men films: a solo title, a solo cartoon DVD, more merchandise- hats, cups, shirts, pajamas, greeting cards, bedsheets, etc. Alas, Marvel has not promoted her, outside of the default association with X-Men. Too bad that corporate/licensing doesn't have the vision to promote her. So many idiots considered themselves psychologically offended at the pairing of Ororo & Panther.. but they will reflexively rail against the notion of her being Marvel's "premier" heroine.

No! There was no Wonderman before Wonder Woman, she is not a spin-off character who got her powers, name sake and much more, from her male predecessor/superior. She is a strong independent woman who stands on no one's shoulders but her own. She is her own entity! she is part of the trinity! 50 years from now people will still know who Wonder Woman is and still regard her as one of the greatest female icons of all time and she will to continue transcend her medium forever!, while very few people will remember Carol after her film career is over. Many people have taken up the name of Captain Marvel and many other people will after Carol but Wonder Woman like Bruce Wayne or Clark Kent, and the end of the day will always be Diana Prince. Don't compare a rock to a mountain!

Storm had a shot. Believe it or not at one time she was more popular than Wonder Woman to comic fans. ( don't get upset WW fans I said more popular not more well known)

Yes you can still be more known and still not be as popular. SEE: Joe Montana compared to Johnny Unitas. Michael Jordan circa mid 80's compared to Magic Johnson and Larry Bird. etc.

That being said. I would like to see a Marvel Heroine as iconic as Wonder Woman. Heck..I would settle for a Marvel Catwoman. Harley Quinn or Batgirl.

Black Cat is Marvel's Catwoman. Or she was, until this latest moral-alignment about-face. Oh well....

catwoman and blackcat are having the same storylines...they took it too seriously.

hard to compete with WW, she is almost a 75 years old character. Carol captain marvel is pretty recent.

    Exactly.

That DC comparative mentality has no place here on the Marvel boards.

    Carol is Carol.

    And this.

Carol will never be Wonder Woman. Marvel may be trying to position her as their most prominent female face. And if so? Awesome. But, that won't make her Wonder Woman.

One movie does not make a cultural icon. Wonder Woman is something beyond just a comic book character.

Sorry to point this out but WW is nothing. Her name represents an ideal of the woman who can do anything as does supergirl. But as a hero she is known for next to nothing. Does anybody know her rogues gallery? Nope. How many times has she been rebooted and given the best creative teams only to flounder back to the doldrums? Too many to count. How many movies does she have? Uh-huh. And this last point is major in my opinion. DC characters don't have movies not because their company lacks the money to make them. They lack movies because WB knows they are not liked by the GA and won't be embraced like Marvel has and always will. They're boring and unrelateable. Why did the new 52 "Marvelize" all of their looks. Why have they always tried to steal marvels look by stealing the artists that Marvel made legends. Batman didn't make Jim lee. The X-men did. Point being: just because WW is more known doesn't make her beloved or popular. I challenge anyone who sees a woman wearing a WW shirt to ask them about her storyline, history, enemies, and a badass moment in her history. 10 to 1 no one will know. "Oh she's an icon" they'll say. Problem is....WHY is she an icon other than for being the most publicized female superhero. That's it. Publicity. There's no other reason for GA to regard her as anything. Everyone said batman and superman could never be replaced. I'd take a look at the masses because by the same standards that most people here regard "the trinity" as iconic (ie shirts, superficial knowledge of their stories, popularity and saliency) Marvel now has them beat. And they're just getting started........
