Just watched the pilot episode of Supergirl.

It had some good parts, but mostly irritated the hell out of me.
    Doubt I'll be watching this.

    Some of the Bad -

    1. Has an adopted sister.
    2. Never explored her heritage or used her powers while growing up.
    3. Never thought she could be a hero too.
    4. An unbelievable Jimmy Olsen.
    5. An Aunt?...from Krypton (more Kryptonians on Earth.
"History of the DC Universe" by Wolfman and Perez, when the DCU use to make sense.

And precisely NONE of those are inherently bad (depending on where they go with them of course).

She did use her powers growing up. She just stopped using them when she decided to living a normal life, hence her saying she wasn't sure if she could still fly since she hadn't done it in so long.

Didn't really like the whole DEO thing, personally. Think they could've saved that plot line for a bit later in the season with the big reveal instead of burning through it in the pilot.

Did like how Kara learned from her first fight with Vartox, though.

It was good not great but it has a lot of potential. Melissa Benoist is fantastic as Supergirl. She's cute but not pornstar fake looking (which is what many complainers apparently wanted), she's unsure of herself but not weak, you can tell she has an inner strength that will be brought out and built upon. Just really good casting. They wanted someone to encapsulate the "girl next door with hidden potential" character to appeal to young girls and I think they pulled it off.

    Things I didn't like:
James Olsen. It has nothing to do with his ethnicity. The guy just has none of the classic Jimmy Olsen traits. I just don't like the handsome, tall, nice physique Jimmy. It sounds kind of silly when he refers to Superman as "the Big Guy" when he has the same build as Kal and they're probably around the same age.

The destruction of Krypton didn't have the emotional impact that it deserved. I know they had to get little Kara off the planet before it exploded but the scene seemed rushed. There wasn't much emotion from her parents seeing as they were saying goodbye to their daughter for the last time before dying.

I don't like the casting of Hank Henshaw. Cyborg Superman is one of my favorite villains but I think casting David Harewood was a mistake. If he becomes a cyborg casual fans may get him confused with Vic Stone. Can already hear people asking "is he supposed to be Cyborg from the Teen Titans?" Something WB/DC probably doesn't want so close to the character's big screen debut.

And just as I was dreading Calista Flockheart was as terrible as she looked in the trailers. Just one big cornball evil boss cliché.

With that said, the action was great! I spontaneously yelled out "Go!" during the plane crash rescue scene. The show has a lot of potential and I like the overarching plot. I'm definitely going to keep tuning in each week.

Saw the first episode. Loved it. It wildly exceeded my expectations. I was among those who didn't think this show could measure up to Smallville. I'm glad I was wrong. It has a very different tone from shows like Gotham and Agents of SHIELD, but that's a good thing. This show really embodies the more hopeful spirit surrounding Supergirl, Superman, and the comics in general. And I think TV needs that right now. In fact, the movies need it more, given the Christopher Nolan effect. This show felt like the anti-Nolan, hopeful and optimistic. We don't get that a lot these days and that's a big part of what made the show so refreshing. Between the first episode and the promos, I'm totally on board with this show moving forward.

Yeah it's refreshing to see a little more lightness interjected. I'm fine with the more serious tone of the Nolan/Snyder-verse we got in MOS and we will get in DOJ, however it's nice to have Super-product out there that connects more to a lighter more hopeful tone.

Also, I'm gonna call it....Alex Danvers = Lena Thorul (Luthor)

Sums up my feelings pretty much.

The show had some pretty awful cgi. Comparatively I know its fine but during the fight scenes when she is getting thrown through the air when she hits the ground she abruptly stops. There was no momentum to the fighting and it just felt like the fight itself was pretty lackluster since there is so much you can do with this. Also the monster of the week (lets face it, this is going to be their format) didn't let go of the axe? WHY?! He was just standing there holding the axe, never mind why the heck an AXE needs a power source but why was he still holding instead of running off and continuing the battle? This final battle feels like they just needed an ending and for a show that has to fight villains very week that is a lame way to get us started.

The actors themselves are nothing really to write home about other than Supergirl herself. She does well enough but I don't feel like we explored her character enough. She has about as much of an arc than Anakin did to Darth Vader. She just sees a plane falling, saves it, and now she wants to be a superhero. For a pilot it could have explored her origin story and gotten away with it because other than me knowing who Kara is, if I didn't know that already, why should I care? She is a superhero and that is about as much as I know if I based this completely on the pilot. I'm not saying start her as a child and progressively age her but how about doing the same thing here and instead of a monster of the week it shows how she finds the hero within instead of just doing it. Why should I care about Kara?

Supergirl gets a C+ It just isn't as good to warrant everyone tuning in to see it and your not missing much otherwise. Lame CGI, a rushed plot, not knowing who Kara is other than Supergirl and she more or less is Felicity 2.0, it just doesn't have the feel from other much better shows out there. It's just not as good as other things you could be watching. Youtube it if you really want to see it but episode 2 you can probably start there and not miss much. I give it a full season because it isn't an awful pilot but your not missing much.

I enjoyed it and accepted it as what it is, no over-analyzing involved. For me there's a heck of a lot of DC to watch throughout the week, so I'm good, flaws and all.

I liked the pilot alot. It was good, and Melissa was very good IMO! Has there been a mention of how many episodes they are doing this year?

    The Good:

-The lead: Melissa Benoist is fantastic. She's adorable, and funny, and instantly endearing/likeable. Plus she fills out the suit well, both literally and figuratively.

-The rest of the cast as good for the most part.

    -The action/effects were quite good.

-The main villain seems potentially interesting.

Stuff I'm not quite sure of:

-Cat Grant-I hope that they tone her down a bit going forward. I don't hate her, but she was the weak link of the group here.

-How they're handling Superman and his absence seems, weird to me. We'll see how it goes, but they need a better explanation for why he's not around.

-Some of the dialogue was clunky.

All in all, I'd give it a B, maybe a B+. It's got "pilot-istis" to a degree, but that's hardly unexpected. So I'm willing to see where it goes.

That's good. Hopefully, both this show and Gotham do well enough in the ratings to stay around for a long time, now that they're up against each other.

Good show, imo. Liked the origin, especially the return of the Danverses. New step-sis was a plus, and I'm glad they didn't go overboard with the dislike (simple jealousy over outright hatred, and they've quickly pushed through it). Pretty much liked the generally lighter tone. Liked the "discussion" about the Supergirl name, even if I will always agree with Kara on that. But yeah, Cat might be a tad OTT. Parts seemed rushed, like she's already told her best friend her secret and Jimmy's confessed to being there to keep eyes on her for "him." And I really liked her very own version of Zod and her army.

Funny, but my mother didn't think she was pretty enough (I certainly do, BTW - I like girl-next-door types). Now, I doubt mi madre was thinking she should have a porn-star look , but I guess she was thinking Kara should have more of a Laura Vandervoort look instead.
