Confusion time: 616 Peter and Mayday already met?

I know there is a thread for discussion about part 1 of Spider-Verse but I feel like this is specific enough to have a longer discussion as I've seen a lot of people on message boards and Twitter confused about it.

When Peter and Mayday see each other, I was expecting a slightly more "epic" and emotional reveal but it's clearly written as if they already met previously.

I'm so confused by this, especially seeing as Marvel generally stays away from multiverse stuff (until recently).

They met in one of the MC2 titles? It was in one of the first ten of Amazing Spider-Girl, I think. She was chasing after some dimension-hopping guy, and when she chased him into the portal, the additional mass or something slingshotted them into early ASM days, where she meets Spidey and the Human Torch.

Hm, any pictures of this? I would have assumed that would be the MC2 Peter's past and not 616.

Used to be right before the Gathering of Five. Now it's the day of the wedding. :/

But May's dad and the 616 Pete are essentially the one and the same before that divergence point.

Right, that's generally how these alternate realities work but either way, it would mean that Mayday went to 616 if this Peter remembers her.

So yes, they met and Peter remembers Mayday.

I'm sure if you look around enough, you can find the page where they fist met.

Not really IMO. The divergence occurs after Peter finishes High School (clone saga or marriage, take your pick). Before the divergence, there is only 616 Peter. Any time travel from Mayday's time to Peter's high school years is going to end up in the 616.

BTW, Marvel does deal with their Multiverse (What if?, for example.). They don't use it the way DC does.

For every possible outcome a universe exists where the opposite or something else went different. Divergent realities are only created when time travel is involved. So MC2 has always been it's own reality. So saying the 616 and MC2 where the same timeline then split is wrong. What would be more correct to say is that MC2 and 616 shared a similar history until certain events happened making it different than the 616.

Wow. May's a little naive to think that her dad didn't date anyone before her mom. Hell you'd think MC2 Peter and Mary Jane would have told May they met each other when Peter was in college. Unless of course it went down differently in the MC2 timeline.
