General omnibus & hardcover discussion vol. II

I guess that one's gonna be the dog's bollocks - and it better be for that kind of money (although that's the reason why I'm most likely going to pass on it).

Btw, dunno if that's been posted yet, but has anyone heard of "Little Nemo - Dream Another Dream"? It's a kickstarter project that collects interpretations of Little Nemo by over 100 of today's best artists in a 16" x 21" HC (think Spirit or EC AEs for a size comparison). Here are some of the artists involved:

My word, is there anyone who comes even close to the quality of the Fantagraphics publications? Such a beautiful and well-produced book.

Yeah I got my copy of witzend a little while ago and it really blew my mind how fantastic it is. The content alone is worth more than cover price, but the presentation is killer. It's my favorite thing that I own I think. Anyone sleeping on this...just pull the trigger. Its worth it.

Thanks for the Sin City pics! It looks good, Tom. I got admit I'm a little hesitant to buy this because it looks enormous! The price is right, but how is the binding and paper? It's not like the Marvel omnibus line is it? That's a lot of white space on those pages and I'd hate for my reading experience to be ruined by art bleeding from the next page constantly.

I bought the Witzend collection and I'm totally blown away by the quality of Fantagraphics work! The slipcase is beautiful but the books are even better quality than I might have hoped for--beautifully thick, paper with gorgeous art covered boards! The books are larger than "oversized", standing something like an inch taller than my Dark Tower omnibus. The quality of this collection really underscores what a poor quality product the Marvel Omnibus line has become. I really can't reccomend Fantagraphics' Witzend enough for you guys who love both great content as well as beautiful looking books!

If it's the same paper as was used in the colossal conan and library editions then it's absolute quality. Basically the best paper used in comics.

The paper in Colossal Conan reminds me of the paper Marvel used to have in their Omnis, like the first Amazing Spider-Man one (first printing). That is some great paper. But I like the thick, matte paper in Witzend, the Barks Library books or even Absolute Watchmen/V for Vendetta even more (not to speak of the paper in IDW's Artist's Editions). Somehow glossy paper always kind of feels a bit cheap to me.

Totally agree on editorial content and extra's. I was merely talking binding, but FBI does it all to perfection.

As for Berentand (Bärenzahn in German)... Have yet to read it, and agree that those planes seem to be made up. But I'm not a specialist in those type of things.

Read the interview and he says he's basing all of his historical books on fact, at least concerning larger developments, machines etc. I also found out what that strange plane on Vol. 2 is. It's the Focke-Wulf Triebflügeljäger (thrust-wing fighter). Problem is, it was just a concept and not even a prototype was built, so I dunno why there are so many obviously fully working ones on the cover. Seems to contradict what Yann says.

Can somebody tell me the best way to collect Sandman and League of Extraordinary Gentlemen? I think there's absolutes and omnibus editions of both, but how can I get each story in the least amount of volumes, pretty sure entire Sandman is collected in 2 books? How about all of League of Extraordinary Gentlemen?

For Sandman there's the 2 omnibuses, but there's also 4 Absolutes if you prefer that format. Then there's a 5th absolute edition that contains extra stories, and also absolute Death. Death is also in a deluxe edition....

As for LoEG. There's also an omnibus, but that's glued. It contains the stories that are in the 2 absolute editions. The first absolute is very hard to find (decently priced) though. The second one is easier to find. Then there's also an absolute black dossier.

All of the above are through DC/ABC comics.

After Black Dossier LoEG is continued by Top Shelf Comics. LoEG: Century was published in three softcover editions, but will be collected in one hardcover soon. After that you can read Nemo: Heart of Ice, and Nemo: The Roses of Berlin. Both hardcovers.

Just got mine in the mail too, and talked a buddy into buying it as well. Really looking forward to it, never read Sin City before(Gasp, I know, it's a...sin...)

I used to have these in tpb so I've read them a few times over the years, and they're still fun. You'll like it. Also, what's cool is how the stories overlap - kind of like 100 Bullets - so when you read another storyline later on it could take place in a bar at the same time, but just a different character. It's a fun, well-thought out read, and written before Miller went nuts.

As others have said: quality paper! We're not talking about no Hickman Fantastic Four omnibus crap! (I know you'll appreciate that reference.)

specks of ink/paper have been ripped off one page and stuck onto the other, it's now this grainy mess.

Is this enough to warrant a refund or something I just have to accept as one of these things/tough luck?

You can always try for a refund but I don't think it's enough. It's not really that much of a problem since it doesn't unables you to read the page proper, it isn't visible aside from that single page and it isn't that visible. But like I said there's no point to not trying if you really don't like it

Bought this one today, "Water Snake" by Tony Sandoval. Unfortunately, I believe this one isn't translated to English.
The book has some gorgeous art though, I'll be looking forward to read it!
