    Once at work, i was looking out the window and saw a hawk come out of nowhere and kill and eat a much smaller bird.

    nice. they'll do that. try to see a falcon. they'll eat birds the same size or bigger. (because small falcons like merlins or kestrels are puny compared to your average pigeon)
    don't quote me on this, but I think falcons specialize in eating other birds, whereas hawks are generalists and mostly eat terrestrial vertebrates like snakes, rodents, frogs, etc.
