F.R.I.D.A.Y, run a final check on the party list
Certainly Bendis has been thinking about Tony Stark for a long time and had definite thoughts about his possible future. I'm sure he always planned to pay off what he introduced in those annuals, books written well before his IM run began, so having that come around again here qualifies as playing the "long game."
What happened at the end of Infamous Iron Man #8?!?!
"We live in a world of cowards. We live in a world full of small minds who are afraid. We are ruled by those who refuse to risk anything of their own. Who guard their over bloated paucities of power with money. With false reasoning. With measured hesitance. With prideful, recalcitrant inaction. With hateful invective. With weapons. F@#K these selfish fools and their prevailing world order." Tony Stark
Sorcerer Tony isn't that new a concept. There was that What If? with Stephen & Tony, where Tones became a semi armored sorcerer:
And the UXM Annual Sorcerer Tony had a different look:
It's probably the same version, but there's been a change in his get-up.
Either way, it's quite a nifty idea. Tony may not be suited for some of the more occult versions, but managing to use tech to manipulate magic/energy is an angle worth exploring (Bendis talks a bit about it in that interview). Hell, I'll take anything that gets him out of his "Flat Earth Atheist" phase. Problem is, Bendis is gonna stay on the title it seems, so... yeah.. I mean, didn't you enjoy the talk Tony and Victor had about his motivations? Or that Japan arc that went... somewhere? Or that Tony/Victor buddy-cop book that totes happened? Great times during his tenure, great times...
BC had that rumor flying around that the big guns were going to come back, so honestly, I wouldn't mind Hickman taking a crack at the Iron Man title. Or someone with more imagination who knows his way around tech and doesn't bullshit his way through with pointless scenes and doesn't bother putting even the tiniest bit of thought on the scientific part of Iron Man. If there's a book out there which requires lots of reading and research, it's this one. Priest could probably knock it out of the park, really. His Deathstroke is leagues above every Marvel title out now, and most DC ones (IMO at least). So basically just get someone who's not Bendis. Or Spencer. Or Aaron. Or...
PS: I've been doing some rereading, and I've noticed that Tony's eye color changes constantly. Sometimes in the same book! It's always either brown or blue, so I guess everyone headcanons him differently. I prefer brown, because with the jet black hair and piercing blue eyes he reminds me too much of Bruce Wayne at times and breaks the immersion. Also it fits with my old-ethnicity headcanon.
