I was just throwing out the situation of Indian rap as an addendum to your comments about appropriation. Your stance was rather unclear to me, because on one hand I thought you were stating that appropriation wasn't evil in itself-- which is contrary to the general stance of people like Barthes-- and yet I thought you were also critical of the Caucasian majority appropriating rap. Can you clarify?

Oh I think mainstream has been appropriating LGBT culture harmfully for the longest time, without credit, Hunger Games included. I mean, at LEAST the people filmed in Paris is Burning deserve something.

I won't deny the possibility that the movie HUNGER GAMES might take some visual tropes from LGBT culture, but I'd say the core of the book's idea descends from a much more prevalent trope in American culture. Call it "City-Mouse Decadence vs. Country-Mouse Simplicity," maybe. For me, the overall idea of the flashy decadence of the wealthy supersedes all other connotations, so I'm not seeing how any harm attaches to the putative source of the visual tropes. The target in the books and the movies are the rich, and everyone hates the rich, even other rich people.
