The men/women knew that if they could get Storm on their side they would be in a higher position of power.

Storm mostly attracts Dark Overlord types; those are all about power, prestige and being top dog, and Storm, who projects (or used to project) an image of royalty is (was) kind of the ultimate trophy wife. Kind of Onassis marrying Jaqueline Kennedy because she was the widow of JFK and had that perfect "first lady" image.
