I'm genuinely quite upset about KI and Marvel being made to fight it out for one spot.
Both of those games have really good communities that have worked really hard to push the FGC forward, Marvel especially, it kind of bums me out to see them not getting guaranteed spots.
I mean, let's look at the 8 confirmed slots.
Street Fighter V
KOF XIV
Injustice 2
SSB Melee
SSB WiiU
Guilty Gear Rev 2
Blazblue Central Fiction
Tekken 7
Now, three of those deserve to be on the main stage without question;
Street Fighter V - Biggest game on the planet, it's fucking Street Fighter of course it's going to be on the main stage.
Tekken 7 - I've played it, it's a wonderful game and it looks like it might be a nice revival for the Tekken community. Tekken is OG, it deserves to be there.
SSB Melee - The Melee community have fought harder than any other community out there to get their spot at Evo, they raised like... over $200,000 in the last charity drive or something ridiculous like that. They deserve a slot no question.
Another three kind of deserve it but it's not a lock in.
KOF XIV - KOF is OG and, while XIV hasn't been as wildly popular as say... XIII was, it's been building a scene and I think it's fair to say that they deserve a slot if not a lock-in.
Guilty Gear/Blazblue - Lumping these two into one slot as you need to have an anime game there, at least one. Both are good games, I prefer Guilty Gear personally but I'd be happy with either. One of them should definitely be there.
Injustice 2 - I guess you need to have a NSR game represented and it is the hot new thing for that community.
So finally, SSB WiiU. Melee is a more exciting game with absurd tech and fan appeal.
I would prefer them to put SSB WiiU and Blazblue into the pit fight and bring Killer Instinct and Marvel up to the locked in nine. Marvel helped build the FGC as it stands today and, as Yipes notes, specifically Evo as a tournament. It's always hype, the game is great fun to watch and the mastery of it in the community right now is ridiculous. And it's the last time UMVC3 will be played competitively at this level once MVCI drops. Give them a send off!
Equally, KI is great to spectate, has a really well-balanced engine and a good community. They have been running events as well and are very serious about pushing fighting games as a genre further forward with innovative and surprising mechanics.
It's a shitty situation that only one of them can get onto the main stage.
Also, RIP Skullgirls. I wish you would make it through. ;_;
Worst case scenario, Pokken wins.
