Default Should you lay big books flat?

I am putting books like Colossal Conan and Big Damn Sin City on a new shelf and was wondering if it would be better to lay them horizontally since they are so heavy. Since the covers are typically longer than the pages in many omniboo, does storing these books upright result in the pages pulling downward due to gravity?

My Ultimate Spider-man had that problem. Since then all my large hardcovers are horizontal no more than three high with the largest on the bottom and smaller on top. I make sure they are lined up perfectly and its fine. I think I read on the Oxford library website that it's the best way for large books to be kept.

I get post it notes and cut them to the right width to sit between the front and back cover boards, peel them to the right height and stand the omnibus up on them. They then support the pages and in turn the binding. None of my omni's have page/binding block sag.
