So what, exactly, is the point of her being his classmate, other than to say she's his classmate? What is added if there's no actual connection there?

To me, it's just a lazy shorthand connection to give Peter and Cindy (and most importantly the reader) SOME bond to go forward from. But it ultimately means nothing but comes across as painfully contrived.

PS, I feel the same about Jessica Jones being Peter's classmate. Really not into that kind of unnecessary retcon that ultimately adds nothing of value.

At this point I just headcanon that Mephisto made a deal with Cindy for power around the time of OMD. Then Mephisto altered history so that Cindy was bit.

contrived? sure... but... it's the sort of contrived comics are famous for.

as for what's the point? that's like asking "why is this here?" the answer is often "why not?"

I thought she was really boring. The only time I thought she was even mildly interesting was in Spencer's run when she revealed a cynicism about the general public that was the exact opposite of Peter's general faith in other people during the Sin Eater arc.

Cindy was a classmate that Pete wasn't particularly close to, so he had no reason to pay attention when she wasn't around. If he didn't know her well enough to remember her name, he's gonna very easily get distracted into not noticing she disappeared. And if we go with the idea that it was a science fair his class was attending... it makes sense for Cindy to be there. .

Going by Amazing Fantasy 15, Peter's class is not attending it: Peter has to invite other members of his class to come with him and they turn him down.
