Making her Captain Marvel for the movie? Not likely at all.

    Carol is the obvious choice.
If they skipped to Kamala, they obviously wouldn't be calling her "Captain" Marvel at all.

I'm confused as you want them to stay away from Mar-Vell and make him nothingmore than just an Abin Sur clone.

He'd be giving her advice and teaching her about the universe as a whole.
A wise old vet that would probably have less than 30 mins of screen time.
It would still clearly be her film.

Which is why they would establish a Captain Marvel film first.
    Kamala could come later.

Besides she still needs time to grow and become established in Marvel.

My concern is that keeping him around arguably makes her seem less independent. It doesn't help that none of the Marvel movies so far have had mentors that lasted beyond the first act. Iron Man had Yinsen die at the end of the first arc. Captain America had the General fade into the background. Thor had Odin uninvolved until he stopped Thor from falling off the Rainbow Bridge.

If the only movie with a female protagonist is also the only movie with a mentor throughout it, it just comes across as a double-standard. Like men can stand more-or-less on their own, but women need to have a man watching out for them.

It could still be good, I would just prefer to keep Mar-Vell's presence fairly minimal.

I think you're looking too deep into it.

It's not like he's watching out for her.
He'd be a dude in bed dying of cancer telling her about the Universe.
Basically cluing her in on what's out there and giving the movie an emotional tether.
Instead of a love interest you have a fatherly figure.

And Thor DID have a mentor figure.
It was Jane (and Eric to a point), who taught him to be more humble.
The very reason he got his power back was because she helped him overcome his arrogance and he once again became worthy.

There's nothing wrong with what you're suggesting btw.
This just seems like a compromise to make everyone happy.

I wouldn't call Jane a mentor. She was a love interest. She and Eric helped Thor learn about the mortal world, but that was all just a way of drawing Thor and Jane closer romantically.

I figure the info-dump telling Carol about the universe could happen in one lump, at the end of the first act.

It's certainly possible I'm overthinking. But I think, for the first really big female superhero movie (Catwoman, Elektra and Supergirl don't count), a lot of thought probably does have to go into it.

I just think it could make for a neat dynamic and give the character some emotional weight.
Heck, have him die during the second act.
His death would give her an even bigger reason to go after Yon-Rog.

It doesn't make her look weak or like she needs a man.
It makes her look like a person who cares and has something to fight for.

and sadly, yes those do count. lol.

    Aha, actually... yeah!
I hadn't thought of that but, yeah.
It's always the death of a woman that gives a hero that push.

Turn the tables around for once.

I love that Carol represents that side of the audience. Star Wars isn't just for boys. Its loved by both genders.
Apparently, the Star Wars thing is a recurring trait in Carol...

The opening would have Mar-Vell though.

    - Captain Mar-Vell is an old Kree hero who has fought the likes of Thanos, going on one last mission.
    - He fights Yon-Rog and in the process is hit by a mass energy wave, Carol is hit as well.
    - In order to save her he transfers the power from his Nega Bands into her.
    - Through the movie he is her mentor, teaching her the ways of the Kree.
    - He's hiding the fact that he's actually dying of cancer.
    - The villain is still Yon-Rog and Carol must face him at the end.
    - When she returns to Mar-Vell she finds him at his last moments.
    - The film closes with Mar-Vell gone and Carol heading to the stars.

It gets rid of the Nitro stuff... but that's fine for a movies sake.
That's a good idea, though I'd skip him teaching her the ways of the Kree and the Nega Bands, and instead just have Carol exposed to some alien rays or whatever when the magnetron blows up, Mar-Vell fatally wounded, and Yon-Rogg gets away. She heads back to SHIELD/Air Force and starts manifesting powers, which she has to figure out by herself while trying to find and foil Yon-Rogg and save the world.

Edit: I'd like the post-magnetron part of the movie to be the bulk of it, and for her supporting cast to be Special Agent Jessica Drew (who can have some of her Hydra backstory, considering Cap 2), and her old Air Force buddy Rhodey.

Bradshaw's got that funny signature big feet thing that he does but otherwise, I'm pleased with how he drew Carol

The extra gold bands around the boots and gloves are a little weird, but nice overall.
