Is there a reason in particular?
I'm confused as you want them to stay away from Mar-Vell and make him nothingmore than just an Abin Sur clone.
He'd be giving her advice and teaching her about the universe as a whole.
A wise old vet that would probably have less than 30 mins of screen time.
It would still clearly be her film.
My concern is that keeping him around arguably makes her seem less independent. It doesn't help that none of the Marvel movies so far have had mentors that lasted beyond the first act. Iron Man had Yinsen die at the end of the first arc. Captain America had the General fade into the background. Thor had Odin uninvolved until he stopped Thor from falling off the Rainbow Bridge.
If the only movie with a female protagonist is also the only movie with a mentor throughout it, it just comes across as a double-standard. Like men can stand more-or-less on their own, but women need to have a man watching out for them.
It could still be good, I would just prefer to keep Mar-Vell's presence fairly minimal.
I think you're looking too deep into it.
It's not like he's watching out for her.
He'd be a dude in bed dying of cancer telling her about the Universe.
Basically cluing her in on what's out there and giving the movie an emotional tether.
Instead of a love interest you have a fatherly figure.
And Thor DID have a mentor figure.
It was Jane (and Eric to a point), who taught him to be more humble.
The very reason he got his power back was because she helped him overcome his arrogance and he once again became worthy.
There's nothing wrong with what you're suggesting btw.
This just seems like a compromise to make everyone happy.
I wouldn't call Jane a mentor. She was a love interest. She and Eric helped Thor learn about the mortal world, but that was all just a way of drawing Thor and Jane closer romantically.
I figure the info-dump telling Carol about the universe could happen in one lump, at the end of the first act.
It's certainly possible I'm overthinking. But I think, for the first really big female superhero movie (Catwoman, Elektra and Supergirl don't count), a lot of thought probably does have to go into it.
I just think it could make for a neat dynamic and give the character some emotional weight.
Heck, have him die during the second act.
His death would give her an even bigger reason to go after Yon-Rog.
It doesn't make her look weak or like she needs a man.
It makes her look like a person who cares and has something to fight for.
and sadly, yes those do count. lol.
That's a good idea, though I'd skip him teaching her the ways of the Kree and the Nega Bands, and instead just have Carol exposed to some alien rays or whatever when the magnetron blows up, Mar-Vell fatally wounded, and Yon-Rogg gets away. She heads back to SHIELD/Air Force and starts manifesting powers, which she has to figure out by herself while trying to find and foil Yon-Rogg and save the world.
Edit: I'd like the post-magnetron part of the movie to be the bulk of it, and for her supporting cast to be Special Agent Jessica Drew (who can have some of her Hydra backstory, considering Cap 2), and her old Air Force buddy Rhodey.

Bradshaw's got that funny signature big feet thing that he does but otherwise, I'm pleased with how he drew Carol
