I'm pretty sure all you can read is Onslaught : X-Men / Onslaught : Marvel Universe / Onslaught Epilogue and be good. Those would probably reference, with footnotes, the other key issues.

The way it was structured, the issues all do lead into those first two key issues.

I have to say, Capcom sure made an awesome and snk-level boss out of Onslaught in the first MvC game. Story-wise, he became powerful enough to warp the multiverse to merge the game-MU with the AU settings of the various Capcom games to bring their characters in.

I can think of about four interesting plot points which occurred during Onslaught:

    1) Students begin to question Xavier, their faith shaken, he is no longer so deified

    2) Dark Beast posing as actual Beast is undone

    3) Joseph starts to become more of a heroic Magneto and ally of the X-Men, and relationship with Rogue

    4) Wolverine being shown in his extremely weird bizarre "hyper healy animalistic" state with that godawful mask

    5) Juggernaut beginning to become redeemed/sympathetic?

X-Men COTA had Magneto, Marvel Super Heroes had Doctor Doom & Thanos, X-Men VS Street Fighter & Marvel Super Heroes VS Street Fighter had Apocalypse, and Marvel VS Capcom 3 had Galactus.
    That's to bad.

(I think it was 6 tpbs collecting entire story, including tie ins)
I loved it back then, but sadly it hasn't fully withstood the test of time.
Some of the X-Men stuff is still pretty good, particularly the Juggernaut & Onslaught revealing himself stuff.

But the tie-ins ..... yikes, the Avengers & Fantastic Four must have been all over the place back then.
No wonder they got erased from existence for a few years.

Still it got me hooked on X-Men and introduced me to the Avengers, so it served it's purpose well.
I loved the Juggernaut & Onslaught revealing himself stuff.

I also loved that the Avengers & Fantastic Four were "all over the place" as you put it. Btw I LOVE this double-page spread!

To me, Onslaught was fine. I did not buy the comics featuring Skullslaught.

Yeah re-reading Onslaught the complete epic is shocking, it really brings you back to the time when X-Men utterly dominated the Marvel U

All the other teams and heroes were so incredibly subordinated it was amazing

The Hulk tie-in issues were by far the worst of the bunch btw

Well so were the SpiderMan ones. Those issues simply were so irrelevant to Onslaught but they were included in The Complete Epic for some reason

I don't even remember how many Avengers issues actually tied in, but the thing has 1296 pages which is pretty freaking huge. The X-Statix Omnibus (the biggest one I have, it's a brick) is only 1200 pages.
I just recently was made aware about this; http://notahoaxnotadream.blogspot.nl...t-omnibus.html

    There was a to me remarkable use of continuity;
X-Men vol. 2; issue 53 revealed to Jean Grey that Xavier secretly harbored a forbidden love for his favorite student. While this had been established as far back as vol. 1; issue 4, it had been all but fogotten until being brought to light once more by Onslaught.

Yeah to me that's one of those like "different societal standards" things that you can exploit if you want to as an author but I mean come on lol.... but yeah a LOT of stuff Xavier did in the 1960s seriously comes off as terrible jackass stuff now

I think the story was the most epic one which Marvel has ever released because everything at the end had meaning. (explained by Apokalypse, the Authors and Uatu's voice in small though bubbles)
Most of the heroes could show how much of a heroes they were(except I think Spidey and Hulk and Dr.Strange was the only hero which was powerless at that time)
and a lot of stuff had consequences like that the heroes were gone(for sometime) you can say everything what made the Onslaught story great , Hickman did the opposite of it in SW.~.*
