Elektra Appreciation: Lady in Red

Best idea ever.

I'm certain we'll get brainless Elektra for a bit, but I think there will be nuance. Sigourney has described Elektra as full of surprises. I wonder if she'll hide her awareness until the perfect time to strike. She does have a history of acting as a sort of double agent.

Not to mention its only an 8 episode series, so hopefully there'll be a bit of a quicker pace to it, so she won't be acting as a mindless drone for too long. The idea of her revealing her true awareness or emotions in a dramatic scene, and redeeming herself seems like it would be an awesome idea though.

Audio is terrible, but this interview with Weaver and Yung touches on the memory thing. Undoubtedly you're right, and as someone pointed out, I think VitaminBee, the scene from the trailer with Elektra and the sai looks to be another such scene

I hope the Black Sky part didn't turn away any of her longtime fans or potential new fans. I actually wasn't bothered by it, but maybe as a Jean fan, it felt like a parallel to her, as both women become destined as some powerful force that could work for good or evil. I think anyone with even a working knowledge of Elektra knows that her death isn't permanent...even movie fans would realize that. I was just afraid she wouldn't come back until Daredevil Season 3, so I'm glad she's a huge part of the Defenders. Hopefully after Defenders, they'll announce her own spinoff.

I hate the Black Sky nonsense, because it plays into the same kind of boring "destiny" archetype that I find so tedious. At least Frank Miller's Elektra had a character that was the consequence of her own choices (however poor that they might have been). She was her own character. Show Elektra, despite Elodie Yung trying REALLY hard to bring something more to the role, is far less interesting. It's all about "destiny" and Stick manipulating her to try and avoid her "destiny" and blah blah blah do I just NOT CARE!!

It was just a creative misfire across the board imo, and totally unnecessary.

Don't care. It still didn't work for me. When I'm audibly groaning at a "reveal," that's not a good sign.

Honestly the Black Sky bit mirrors a little of Miller's work in Man Without Fear, with the voices Elektra hears being tied to the fight she is inevitably drawn to. They just changed it from voices in her head and made it the pull of Destiny. Perhaps more generic, but not insanely different.

Just like they made Stick her father figure, and you know he's gotta die sooner or later. Yes a change from the source material, but all the pieces are there. Honestly, while I don't like the Man Without Fear origin, that's what they're pulling from, and I don't buy that version being so affected by her father's death. A father figure more tied to her true nature, however, could make or break her.

Whilst I wasn't entirely happy with how Elektra was adapted for Netflix, I am really looking forward to The Defenders and I'm cautiously optimistic she will get her own spin off series. Though I really need to get a move on and finish watching Luke Cage and Iron Fist first.
