I like Barry, Wally is cool, but Barry was just a cool if not more...he gave up his life to save everyone.

One of my favorite pages featuring Barry:

Sums up the character's appeal well.

That page was humorously alluded to years later:

I came to Barry/Flash via the Flash Point Paradox film. I loved the fact that he was masculine without the chest beating machismo. I like Alpha males. But Barry's strength was more understated and more subtle. He's also very intelligent and very kind, yet not a doormat. I can see why he had no shortages of women interested in him.

SECRET ORIGINS # 32 (1989), which provided the first Post-COIE retelling of how the Justice League first formed. Essentially, it was a 1980s remake of the 1960s era JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA # 9.

Mark Waid and Barry Kitson's JLA YEAR ONE series, which appeared about a decade later, spun out of that issue of SECRET ORIGINS.

Oh, I adore JLA: Year One - especially the depiction of Barry Allen, fittingly enough. I'm definitely going to have to check it out.

SECRET ORIGINS # 32 reads almost like an "Issue 0" of the JLA YEAR ONE series, with more humor thrown in. The issue was written by Peter David and illustrated by Eric Shanower, whose name is unfamiliar to me, but his illustration style is reminiscent of Kevin Maguire's.

Yeah, I thought so too. And that's a pretty great creative team.

The great thing about SECRET ORIGINS # 32 is that it's the founding JLA team (or at least, the Post-COIE version of it), but the story is told with a "Bwa-Ha-Ha" JLI-type feel. Much of the story is LOL stuff as well as the expected action.
