Northstar? I mean I love the guy, but come on. I wish we had a gay superhero that actually ranked in the top 25.
I was trying to do too much and not doing any of it as well as I could. But I've had a change of mind... though not everyone shall enjoy it. I will.

Northstar and Beast made the list but Cyclops didn't. There's definitely something wrong here.

Did not catch this until you mentioned it but good point. The list is interesting. I would not book the FF this high on the list, but they do have some of the longest longevity on the Marvel side.

There are a few ways to go with this.

One way would be historical impact. Another would be favorite. Another might be most successful run (and/or most lucrative run).

I could never list 50. From a historical standpoint (i.e., impact on comics as a medium AND overall cultural influence and familiarity), I'd go with:

    1. Superman
    2. Batman (and Robin)
    3. Spider-man
    4. Captain America
    5. Wonder Woman
    6. The Shadow [Could add characters like Doc Savage, Tarzan, Prince Vaiant, Flash Gordon, Green Hornet, etc.]
    7. Captain Marvel (SHAZAM!) [Huge during that particular era.]
    8. X-Men
    9. Wolverine
    10. Watchmen

Edit: I think you have to consider teams and members of teams in the list. Wolverine is extremely popular outside of the X-Men association. And no one character from Watchmen is more popular than the entire team/concept of a team.

I don't think Watchmen characters should be on a list like this. They were basically a satire of superheroes.

Interesting list, though it contains mainly the superheroes from big 2.

Satire is the wrong word here. Watchmen is partly an homage and partly a deconstruction. It's not satire in the vein of Swift or Cervantes or even Zappa because it's not openly mocking humanity en masse. It's a very specific tribute to and critique of the superhero sub-genre of comics.

But, even if it were satire, I still think it belongs on the list because you can't argue that the historical impact of the series wasn't gigantic...and my list is based solely on my perception of historical impact. From the historical perception, it would be silly to include e.g. Gambit, Northstar, The Scarlet Witch and Kitty Pryde.

I could've extended the list a bit to add Spawn, Hellboy, John Constantine, The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and The Phantom --- again based on impact on the medium.
