Default Should The BDSM Themes In Wonder Woman Be Used Or Ignored?

With the exception of the Lasso, most of the S&M references in the Wonder Woman comic have been discarded. Grant Morrison's upcoming elseworld comic plans on bringing them back, while for such elements are source of ridicule for Diana. Do you prefer Diana with or without the S&M themes?

Well it is relative, I think Azzarello made a good use being subtitle about it. Curious about Morrison take on BDSM.

I don't think it is something in need on a WW comic, I wouldn't miss it.

BDSM most def needs to be incorporated somehow into the WW world. I'm thinking the upcoming WW Earth One (Trial of Diana Prince) might have some interesting takes on BDSM.

I dont really like it when Diana is written as a perfect, pristine virgin goddess. Its boring and comes off as being pretty condescending.

I agree with blacksun that Azzarello handled her character really well; she was a strong and good person with impeccable morals, but still far from perfect.

Given the choice, I support the exploration of sex and sexual themes, gender roles, and femininity in general within the pages of Wonder Woman. She was designed to challenge conventions, why stop that?

I don't find it particularly sexy, but in my reading of Wonder Woman runs that lack WW's lasso have her usually do increasingly violent things to bring about an end to conflict. Azzarello's WW tied people up all the time, but I don't remember other runs doing the same (except Marston of course).

I don't mean to sound aggressive here, but you seem less comfortable with Diana being written as flawless than you do Clark going by some of your posts.

I don't know how overt they need to be, but to me the core of WW has always been rooted in Marston's theories of "Loving Submission" ... Bondage is a very literal expression of the characters core values. I don't think she needs to be a leather clad dominatrix, but I think showing her power shine by being able to accept that submission to love is awesome.

I would add: "... if it can be done well." I'm game for exploring gender roles, loving submission, and such IF it's done well. If not, I'd rather not have it at all. Something like "Amazons Attack" is a miserable failure in my book, and WW would be better off without it, imo.

I think Azzarello handled some of it pretty well (eg, Diana's definition of submission, and Diana submitting to Artemis). I don't think he handled the Amazons and their gender roles very well. More damage than good there.

The bondage was about submission and ego in marston's run. It can be done

I've long wished that Moulton's emphasis had been less on bondage and more on teaching how to escape bondage.

True. Good point. I'd rather not see the book devolve into soft-core porn or anything.

Im very intrigued by how Morrison will handle her in Earth-1. Hes the only writer in (my) recent memory who is trying to "bring the sexy back" with Diana.

You're probably right. No, I take that back. You're absolutely right. I love Diana, and have followed her for over twenty years, but I was basically born with a Superman cape on. Im much more critical of how Clark is portrayed than I am other characters. Im also more informed, having read more Superman material.

I don't think DC want anything progressive for WW. I'm just seeing the character regret in the last years.

Sexuality is a easy way to put cheesecake and exploit women, there is few people who can dot it. Matt fraction, kieron gillen/mckelvie, kelly sue, have credit to do it

On one hand, I wouldn't mind seeing alternative lifestyles/sexuality explored in cape comics if it's done in an intelligent way. On the other hand, a lot of writers can't seem to even get "vanilla" relationships right in superhero comics. Do we really trust them to tackle something like bondage themes?
