Actor Donnelly Rhodes, probably best known for playing Doc Cottle on the 2nd Battlestar Galactica series, has died at the age of 80. He also appeared on the sitcom Soap.

However, for me, he will always be Grant Roberts on the show Danger Bay.

I had no idea until yesterday that David Cassidy had died- or that Kate Cassidy was his daughter.

Hugh Wilson, creator of the 1978-82 sitcom WKRP in Cincinnati, has died at age 74. He also directed the first Police Academy movie.

WKRP is still my favorite sitcom of all time.

RIP Peter Wyngarde, who managed to inspire both Austin Powers and an X-men villain:

Going back to late December 2017:

Actor Alfie Curtis passed in late December 2017. He was best known for his role as the sinister Dr. Evazan in Star Wars: A New Hope (1977) - he, along with Walrus Man (Ponda Baba) picked a fight with Luke & Obi-wan in the cantina, much to the short-lived regret of them both.

This is sad news, but not unexpected. ANH came out over 40 years ago, so it makes sense that those in the film (or who worked behind the scenes) would be passing on.

The cantina scene is quite possibly my favorite scene in any movie, and I've seen hundreds over the years. I remember being both terrified & fascinated by this as a kid re: all of the odd & unique aliens. And, the Dr. Evazan/Walrus Man scene specifically was one of the most important scenes in the film - because it showed that someone who had previously been seen as an harmless, crazy old hermit (Obi-wan) actually was a lot more than he initially appeared to be.

I'm not sure Alfie did the voice, though. In the rough cut of the scene, he has a very thick British accent (as does the bartender). It's not unheard of; a great deal of SW voices were dubbed over. Harry Shearer, who of course is well-known for the Simpsons, I think at least did two voices: The commander who gives Vader the report on the Millenium Falcon, and later the ill-fated Rebel Y-wing pilot who notices the turbolasers aren't firing.

You're right - they may have used Alfie's actual British accent voice in the rough cut, but changed it for the actual film. Evazan's voice in the film spoke English with an American/Canadian accent, not a British one.

Wuher (the Bartender) also speaks with a British accent in this rough cut, but speaks with an American/Canadian accent in the final cut of the film.

Here's the rough cut for reference - some great stuff here:

Ursula Le Guin has died. Probably one of the 10 best fantasy and SF authors of all time.

I am very sad she didn't live to see a decent adaptation of her Earthsea stories.
