What universe are the new gods from ?

Most of the stories involving new gods have to take place on earth 0 to involve the earth 0 heroes so where the new gods come from is not really an important question. Grant Morrison seems to be the only dc writer using the Grant Morrison explanation for the new gods so his explanation is also not really important.

I believe they still are.

A certain amount of sense-making there, since I imagine part of the importance and evolution of the Guardians from the early Maltus days had to do with the fact that they took up residence on the planet where !Science Monitor Dax Novu! entered creation. The implication is that the Monitor-schism that resulted in Dax and Mobius, you know, Mobius landed in the Anti-Matter Universe ... but in all the Infinite Multiverse, Dax landed in Earth-1 Universe. Not at "Volthoom Rock, Universe-3" or "Starheart Chunk, Universe-2", or "Cosmos Central, Universe-184848".

Because OF COURSE the Monitor entered the Multiverse in the Mainstream DCU, not some fringe area.

Just to speak to the New Gods a little bit - one of the facets of the fifth-dimensional "thought-realms", the imaginary god worlds that interact with all the universes - is to what degree they interact with those worlds. And to what degree those worlds interact back. This goes to the notion that the New Gods are or aren't "from" any given universe.

The north and south dimensions - the Dreaming and Nightmaring spaces - are the most "affected", the most altered, interactive, constantly in flux, realms that we mortals (well, DCU mortals) have the most affect on. Every person in the multiverse dreams, and affects the dreaming. And so they're wildly flexible spaces.

As you move down the degrees from North/Dream and South/Nightmare, the idea-spaces you encounter are less and less interactive with the human imaginations feeding them. Monotheistic Heaven and Hell, and Pagan Pantheon and Pagan Underworld reflect individual imaginations - you make your own personal Hell, after all, and that dimension tailors punishments uniquely to you. You make your own heaven. Olympus changes appearances all the time. There's a zillion variations of underworld. But they aren't free space like Dream/Nightmare - they're governed by ideas and ideals. There are rules in Hell and Heaven. Even if you're in your own personal Hell, some Demon is there, servant of whatever Devil you ascribe to, and you will be punished.

The ultimate form of being "fed by imagination" but not giving anything back - of being platonic, immovable ideas and ideals, comes with Apokolips and New Genesis. These are god-beings that occupy the same higher dimension but they are not flexible at all, or at least, barely flexible. Darkseid is Darkseid. If he enters Captain Carrot universe, he might appear to be a giant hippopotamus guy, but he's still Darkseid, not "Captain Carrot's personal Devil or concept of Hell." It's definitely the difference between locked ideas/ideals and pure freeform imagination.
