Default Namor75: 365 Days With Namor the Sub-Mariner

Continuing the celebration of Namor's 75th anniversary year!

Inspired by Existentializzy, a Namor fan with lovely wit and observations, who celebrated Namor's 70th anniversary with an image a day on her tumblr, I'll be doing the same, but with covers. Covers from NINE decades of Namor's storied history -- so 365 covers!

    Sunday is the SAVAGE '70s

    Monday is the MARVELOUS '80s

Tuesday is the TANTALIZING 21st CENTURY

    Wednesday is the WILD '90s

    Thursday is the TERRIFIC '30s & '40s

Friday is the FABULOUS '50s & FANTASTIC TEAMS

    Saturday is the SWINGING '60s

Plus, I'll be sharing Existenializzy's images -- so, 365 panels!

If you've got a favorite panel with Namor or a fun caption, feel free to share it here.

    Default THE TERRIFIC '30s & '40s

    Thursday is THE TERRIFIC '30s & '40s
    Day 1

    Marvel Mystery Comics #4
    by Alex Schomberg
    Cover Date: February 1940

This was the first Timely cover to feature Namor. Comics were usually dated two months before they hit the news stand, so this issue probably debuted in December 1939. I believe it's the first Timely cover to feature their characters fighting Nazis, long before the US entered WWII.

Gotta love a man who is willing to share his feelings … at the appropriate time.

Friday is the FABULOUS '50s & FANTASTIC TEAMS
    Day 2

    Sub-Mariner #33
    by Bill Everett
    Cover Date: April 1954

Namor's solo book, and his legendary creator, Bill Everett, returned in the Atlas superhero revival of the 1950s. This issue had a new retelling of Namor's origin, set up his future "foes" -- the Communists, and a fun adventure with Betty Dean fighting giant Crocodiles in the Amazon. Bill Everett's art is simply gorgeous!

Very appropriate, since there is a possibilaty that this year, because of Secret Wars, MIGHT be the very last year that Prince Namor McKenzie, the Savage Sub-Mariner, will HOLD ON TO HIS STATUS as the very first marvel superhero to launch the 616 marvel universe in 1939.

Well, even if they reboot the MU, which I doubt will happen, the historical record remains, as does the original origin of the 616. And they've already retconned in other super powered characters who appear in the 616 before Namor. But again, that doesn't change the fact that Namor was the first who appeared in Motion Picture Funnies Weekly #1, all those decades ago.

But hey, if you want to celebrate Namor's multitude of appearances before whatever happens in Secret Wars, here's a place to do so.

Namor the Sub-Mariner, Marvel's oldest character, will have been published for 85 years in 2024. So where's my GOOD Namor anniversary ongoing, Marvel?

    Saturday is the SWINGING SIXTIES
    Day 3

    Fantastic Four #4
by Jack Kirby & inked by Sol Brodsky
    Cover Date: May 1962

Namor's first appearance since the end of his Atlas book in 1955, and his debut in the modern Marvel Universe. And things were never the same.

The helmet, of course, is the Serpent Crown.
This is from one of my favorite issues, and existentializzy made me enjoy it in another light. It made me realize Moses Namor was upbraiding his possessed people for their flight toward ... paganism. But ... but.. pagan Neptune. LOL!

    Sunday is the SAVAGE SEVENTIES
    Day 4

    Sub-Mariner #21
by Marie Severin & inked by Johnny Craig
    Cover Date: January 1970

Another Namor invasion of the surface world -- but not really since Namor is actually trying to stop the invasion.

It was a common story device back in the day. As was the exaggeration on the covers. They really didn't set NYC on fire, like that cover shows. Instead, they had cool aquatic animal looking ships threatening everyone. Attack of the Giant Metallic Crawdad. LOL!
