Default The Atom (Ray Palmer) Appreciation Thread

    DC Forum Appreciation Thread rules:

    1) No negative comments about the honoree of this thread. It's an appreciation thread, not a non-appreciation one.

    2) No negative discussion about any competitors of the honoree of this thread (i.e. John Stewart in the Hal Jordan thread). No ifs, ands, or buts. Find another non-appreciation thread to do that, just not here.

    3) No negative comments about other versions of the character. For example, if you like the DCU version of Cyborg, but hate the DCnU version (or visa versa), just appreciate the earlier version and keep your comments about the latter to yourself.

    The Atom in Arrow

A possible angle for an new Atom ongoing...the Unobserved Universe.

Besides the microverse the Atom with the SHADE organization should be able to go into parts of the Universe that is unobservable. There's a theory in Physics called the reciprocal perspective which says that there is a material sector and a cosmic sector. Also if you use the African saying of As above So Below and apply it to the atoms in our bodies and other solid objects you will find that the atoms in objects are a mirror of what's out their in space.
Consequently, the Atom can theoretically see the 'unobserved' Universe by being inside the micro-verse.
In the reciprocal perspective theory it says that
The material sector is our common reference frame that contains the observable and measurable structure of the universe, the cosmic sector remains unobservable and unmeasurable to our physical senses, though we can see it's effects on how time changes space. Those effects being called Force Fields (electric and magnetic fields). We cannot see a magnetic line of force until it interacts with a material object such as iron filings and alters their behavior in space.

The atom can investigate magnetic lines in the unobserved Universe which are having effects on Earth such as maybe freak storms, virus, people turning into Zombies.

I am interested in seeing how he is received by audiences in the coming second half of this season on Arrow. There are rumors that if he does well he might receive his own show.

I can't say I've been enjoying Palmer on the show. They haven't been doing much with him.

He has been very secretive. So I will be interested to see how they evolve his character as this season continues.

Routh has played him to perfection, he's on the things I look most forward to seeing on Arrow.

Routh was a very good choice to play Palmer. He can really bring a presence that I always imaged Ray would have.

So is Palmer going to be running around in the ATOM suit without the ability to shrink? Because I thought that I heard that he wouldn't be shrinking on Arrow.

That would be awesome if that was true. I have been enjoying Routh's characterization so far on Arrow.

I can see DC creating an team book with ATOM at the center if he becomes really popular in the show or even gets his own show but I cant see him being able to carry his own solo and thats not a knock on him or his character its just a fact that not everyone can carry the sales needed to sustain their own solo book.
    Pull List:
DC: Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Action Comics, Detective Comics, Green Lanterns, The Flash, Aquaman, Titans, Justice League, HJATGL, Supergirl, Superwoman, DC Bombshells
Marvel: CANCELLED (good luck with your seasonal approach and constant reboots... I'll miss the characters though)
    Zenescope: Grimm Fairy Tales

All New Atom features Ryan Choi and not Ray Palmer.

He's been functioning in a ... diminished ... capacity these last few years. As a fringe player. And Jeff Lemire has been a bit proprietary with him, too, which isn't a bad thing if we'd get a solo out of it.

The Atoms - Palmer & Choi get the smallest of cameos in Final Crisis, so it's not the best example, but stuff after that is pretty good showcase for Palmer. That said, while they both feature in James Robinson's Justice League: Cry For Justice ... ew. I recommend don't.
Blackest Night: Geoff Johns used Blackest Night not just to be a big GL story but to showcase the characters who weren't A-List but should have been, so The Atom and Mera have a huge showcase here.
Blackest Night: The Atom & Hawkman. One-shot, one of the few very important ones with big plot points for Blackest Night, that plays on the old Atom/Hawkman friendship.
Brightest Day: The Atom. Lemire & Mahmud Asrar. Lovely one-shot. Introduces the Ant Farm.
Frankenstein: Agent of S.H.A.D.E.. Lemire & Alberto Ponticelli. In the New 52 The Atom is sort of the ultimate super scientist in charge of the mad-science and monster-hunting S.H.A.D.E that Grant Morrison created. Like, he's the Q to Frankenstein's Bond. While he's a supporting role here, he steals the scene and does jump into action after a while. Plus it's a short run title.
Batman/Superman # 10. Ray finally suits up as The Atom and helps Superman save Batman.
Red Hood and the Outlaws 32-34. Red Hood and friends run afoul of S.H.A.D.E. and so S.H.A.D.E. conscripts them for a mission that sets off the whole most recent storyline. In the wake of his recent history and Forever Evil, Man-Bat works for S.H.A.D.E. now, so he works directly for The Atom. I hope they do something with that.
The New 52: Futures End. More Jeff Lemire stuff with S.H.A.D.E., set in the Future. One of the better characterizations because it's basically just a possible continuation of the Frankenstein run.
Retro315 no more. Anonymity is so 2005.

I was thinking the other day about how Ant Man never seemed to get enough momentum to carry an ongoing series in much the same way as the Atom or Aquaman. And I think in both Atom and Ant Man's cases the reason is the same: the characters would be best served as vehicles for science fiction, and comic book writers tend to ignore science in favor of action. Plus, how many writers really feel qualified today to write SF?

I was on FB today, looking at a conversation which began with semantics and graduated quickly into it's real topic, the cloud (the semantics were just a lead-in). Apparently the people involved were experts. It was as if they were speaking another language. How do you write science-based fantasy (which is all science fiction is really) when modern science is so specialized that English becomes a cipher?

My point is that finding a proper writer for true science heroes would probably be difficult. If DC can find a successful Atom writer, they should try like hell to keep them for the next hundred issues.
