Who gives a yuck if billy jay can talk to everything with a face? Only thing that matters at the end of the day is that the character or in this case Sam is a capable superhero. Which he is and has proven time and time again.

Precisely. This is why there's no need to focus on his abilities. What's most important is building him a solid supporting cast, rogues gallery and a mission of sorts - a direction. The character is there, but now we need the rest of it to bring him into true leading man status. I believe that's in the realm of possibility.
