Turns out the Red Room keeps track of Black Widows, and clones them and implants their memories whenever they die.

My question is, spoilers:end of spoilers
if the Red Room has had cloning and memory manipulation technology all along, why did they wait until she died? Why not send a Natasha clone to take out the original one, or at least replace her, as soon as she defected? Or, if they didn't have the technology back then, why not do it once they did have the technology? But in general, why does the Red Room still care about Natasha now after so much time?
