Well, it's a toss up. Because DC has done books where the whole thing was released at once as a trade, and it's gone on the best seller list.

I honestly thing this will be the way forward for comics because the mentality behind a lot of singles is "how long can we string this out" where as OGN would be actual planning and actual arcs. So the writing would be better. When a single comic sucks people just dismiss it as "well its only $5" or however much a single costs?

I resolved a few years ago to trade-wait any further series. Broke that with IDW's new Disney comics, though - but I already have a short box full of Uncle Scrooge and Donald Duck comics, so it feels more like I'm continuing to collect a series rather than jumping on to something new.

I suppose it's kind of random. I enjoy collecting trades and hardcovers and organizing them on my rapidly increasing number of bookshelves. I also enjoy going to a shop and picking up a few new issues. Actually, a lot of the stuff I read is only available in collected form: foreign material, vintage reprints, original graphic novels, ect. Hellboy and Usagi Yojimbo are the only ones for which I collect single issues and get collections, 'cause I'm obsessed.

I read the stuff I really want to read digitally until an oversized hardcover drops, then I'll get it. For stuff I don't care too much about or just reads better in collected format, I'll trade wait.

I just remembered something important about this: if I'm gonna get single issues I want my money's worth! Mike Mignola and Stan Sakai are masters of the form, so each issue is a treasure. Adventure Time, Popeye, and (now) Uncle Scrooge have lead stories and back-up features (and those last two have a high page count). Dark Horse Presents also has a high page count and a variety of short stories that allow you to sample various artists and genres. An vibrant letters column is also a plus. The Mignolaverse's "Hellmail" is a must-read!

Many modern comics feel slight. They read better as a collection, but a single issue has to feel like a mini-event unto itself.

Elektra, Black Widow, Deathlok, Moon Knight...there are no such guarantees. Still waiting on Blade to get another shot, been almost 10 years.
This used to be my approach too, but when I went abroad for a bit and now I'm trade waiting on everything.

I really enjoy reading good letter columns (like in Hellboy and Usagi Yojimbo). Plus, I love the paper Usagi Yojimbo is printed on, so I like getting the single issues (not to mention how good the stories themselves are).

    I don't trade-wait anything. I like floppies too much.

What I buy in trades tends to be older stuff. I'm digging the Complete Collection and Epic Collection lines.

One thing I will do though is digital-price-drop wait. For some series that I want to try but not for $4, I'll wait the year and buy whole arcs at $1.99 or less on Comixology.

Marvels trade only for the very little I buy. Most of DC though I'm giving all the floppies a shot this month.

I trade wait almost everything. Though, if I get wind of a deluxe edition on something I enjoy, the trades get dumped for the upgrade. The wait is longer in between, which is a con, but if it's something I can reread several times, I'd like to have a more durable edition.

Not necessarily "trade wait" (still prefer 'floppies")...but I don't buy any comic as it comes out anymore.

When I used to buy about 14 comics as they came out. Very few read well as single issues anyway. And the ones that did are almost invariably cheaper if you buy them 6 months/ couple of years after they come out. And...of course..there is all those comics that you start because one of your favourite writers is on them, when 3 issues later they are cancelled or somebody whose stories you don't enjoy becomes writer.

A lot more effective use of time if you just let runs you're interested in get to 20 issues or more...then buy them, read them and enjoy them at own pace.

I'm not so sure that asking this question in the collected edition thread may give you unbiased answers. I wait for EVERY series to have a HC before buying anything. I just can't stand the hole floppy concept.
    1) Easily damaged
    2) Pricy
    3) Waiting forever just to finish reading a story you barely remember the beginning when the end is nearing. WTF?! Makes no sense (but hey: that's just me)
    4) Nearly every storage concept I ever witness looks **** for more than 100 floppies (a few VERY nice concepts for a smaller couple of floppies displayed I admit). I mean come on: long boxes!?!? Drawers? Bagged and boarded? What is this?! You can't even see what's inside the boxes, you can't just take one book out of the shelf and flip through. It's pure rubbish collecting large numbers of floppies. Which leads to
    5) No shelfporn possible (again: for more than 100 floppies displayed) unless you own a football stadium sized room

    rant off.

    Sorry but I hate floppies

There are a few exceptions, but I wait on everything and get whichever format is cheapest.
