Adding Doom 2099 to my reading list then!

I agree that bringing the Maker back for real would have been great, and what better nemesis to give Doom? Stop squandering so much potential Marvel!!
I'll jump over to the MTIO thread to discuss that. I have opinions! But I agree with Abe.

I think you will be glad you did pick up Doom 2099. One thing you should keep in mind is that the whole idea of the internet was a shiny new toy at that time and it does play a role in some of the landscape of the world of 2099. It fact, there is also is a pretty good one shot called 2099 World of Doom Special if you can find it. It sort of like a mini-encyclopedia IIRC. I'll have to dig my copy out. I think it has the Doom Manifesto in there too, outlining his policies etc.

Doom 2099 is actually how I got into Doom as a character, way back when it first came out and I was 12.

My brother was a Spider-Man fan and I was a Wolverine fan at the time, but X-Men 2099 wasn't announced until almost a year after Spider-Man, Ravage, Doom, and Punisher were (and then X-Men 2099 never had a Wolverine 2099). So my brother got Spider-Man 2099 and I got Doom 2099 as subscriptions.

It's been a good while since I read them, but I followed Warren Ellis after that and Doom moved into my top 5, where he's stay ever since (and Wolverine dropped out of there in the intervening 25 years).

I hope you like them. If you find anything in particularly worthwhile in them, let us know. (Or we could start a little Doom 2099 reading club over here.)

I'd be up for a Doom 2099 reading club. But then, I already have every issue. The difficulty will be faced by new readers trying to acquire those back issues that have been out of print since the original publication. Which with the exception of the Warren Ellis run in the middle, that got a trade reprint in 2013, means most of Doom 2099 is very difficult to find.

I mean, in a pinch someone could scan their copies and upload them as a PDF document. However, I'm pretty sure this would violate the CBR forums TOS. I sure as hell don't want to get banned for distributing pirated copies of Doom 2099. Even if Marvel is being too lazy to put them back into print or provide digital versions.

They have all of the issues of Doom 2099 on "mycomicsshop", and the price is not bad at all. Even the 1st issue is under 2 dollars.

I was thinking maybe one issue a week as a pace, which would give people time to afford and find them. But I also didn't realize they weren't easily available. I also have all the issues from 25 years ago.

I think the reading club is a great idea, and maybe we can mark spoilers for those who want to catch up later. I think it depends on the area and how well stocked you LCS is. I had to go back and find some of the issues I missed early in the run but most of them I bought as they came out. Sometimes I've seen them in back issue bins for a couple of dollars. I wish Marvel Unlimited would add more of the Doom 2099 stuff. The only have one issue and it's because it's a crossover with Spider-Man 2099. I think almost all of those single issues are available.

I should dig out that one shot issue and scan in Doom's manifesto.

    Iron Maiden,
I have an honest question for you. When and why did you become such a huge Doom fan? You are clearly, on this thread and others, the voice of Doom-Fan. I am just curious what spurred your love for this awesome fellow from FF #5?

It's hard to say. I've been reading comics since before I was a teenager. The first Marvel comic I read was Fantastic Four #39-40. It's been so long I can't remember which was first because I think I read #40 first then didn't get a copy of #39 until later. Our friend from next door had some Marvel comics and I just liked the look of Doom's mask and cape. After that we had our Dad buy comics and we were able to get that follow up fight the Fantastic Four had with the Frightful Four...and Ben had been turned against his teammates by the Wizard's ID machine.

But looking back, I always liked reading about villains. I read the Fu Manchu series when the came out with paperback versions of them. I enjoyed watching the Universal monster movies and I recall watching one that was loosely based on the play Richard III. Richard of Gloucester was the most interesting character in the movie. Some years later we watched Lord Laurence Olivier's film of Shakespeare's play as a school assignment. Around that time I started to look at Doom as Marvel's Richard III. Sounds goofy but that's about it!

Thank you for sharing your back story regarding Doom. Amazing how as adults, we are still attracted to our fancies of youth. Keep up the good work and your love for Doom!

Thanks Mantis Dad. Funny how the things you loved when you were a kid endure. Sherlock Holmes is still my favorite detective for example and I had read all of the books and short stories as a teen-ager.

Just as I read all the REH's Conan yarns as a child as well. To this day, he is still one of my favorites of all time, and I re-read the original stories annually.

I don't think I've ever gone back to read a book. I do it a lot with comics but that is something I should do but right now I have to get back into books. I think the internet just sucks up a lot of your time and I have to learn how to balance things out.

On another note: Kevin Smith held a fan event where he had Infinity War writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely as his special guests. Towards the end of the 2 hr show, they opened it up to fan questions. One astute fan did ask a question that if not a Fantastic Four movie then could a Doctor Doom movie be done right. This starts at about the 1 hr and 50 minute mark. Article on comicbook.com

All these Doom 2099 posts make me a little sad. Doom 2099 is really good. We are weirdly enough in the perfect political climate for this book to make a triumphant comeback and have something to say. The whole 2099 line even as Spider-man 2099 proved there is still some interest in it.

I agree. I don't want to get too controversial but I know you've been to the community forum's thread on the current state of politics. I think we can both say that both Doom and Trump are morally challenged. But I think that between the two, there are far fewer issues with Doom than there is with Trump. But the whole tax cut issue has echoes of how the Mega Corps of 2099 where the true powers of that world. There's a vast amount of wealth controlled by a very small percent of the population. I made up a term that describes Doom's style of government .....feudal socialism. In some respects it's similar to the British monarchy but Doom is certainly not just a figurehead.
