It doesn't save the fact that he abandoned his wife and child in the wilderness with mutant killers Sinister unleashed on his flawed merchandise (Maddie).

He made a quick trip to NY to check on the woman he loved and believed to be dead which just came out of coma. Shortly after, when he tried to call back home (not exactly in the middle of the wilderness but a nice little house in a nice little town), the phone number was canceled and he believed that Maddie left her, taking their son.
