Story lines you cannot believe Marvel published, RE: Death of Magneto, Aunt May, etc.

Marvel has published a lot of stories with "shocking" twists. While some stories are written with the upcoming retcon in mind, such as Peter Parker revealing his identity in Civil War, other stories are written for the sake of story, killing off major characters, changing major characters, leaving Marvel to do an about face some years later.

What I am asking is - are there any stories that shocked you, thinking "wow" I cannot believe Marvel made this commitment to story. Stories they published which, at the time, had no intention of retconning.

My examples:
Killing Gwen Stacy
Killing Green Goblin
Killing Magneto in Morrison's run.
Aunt May Finally dying.
Hank Pym abusing the Wasp
Death of Kraven

I'm more of a Spider-Man/Daredevil guy. Wondering what other instances you can think of company wide.

Well, we know the Hank Pym thing got published because it wasn't a storyline, it was just an artistic error in one panel. Marvel didn't commit to anything there. The Magneto storyline getting published is bizarre because it's quite clear that Marvel weren't okay with it, since they retconned it almost immediately.

To this day, I still can not believe they allowed Ultimatum to be published.

The fact that they didn't take the script, spit on it, tear it up, burn it and ban anyone whose ever laid eyes on it from speaking of it again baffles me.

Any story or event that involves Aunt May coming back from the dead. It's like Marvel doesn't want Peter to just let go of her already.
