    Default My ideal DC Multiverse!

It would be infinite (or pretty darn close). It would be divided into "strands"/regions. All of DC's different continuities would be in this multiverse. The main strands of the DC Multiverse would include:

1.) Big Bang style; Earth-1, present day is 1965; Earth-2, present day is 1945.

2.) Pre-COIE; neither COIE nor the events leading up to it happened hare. This strand is intact. Its present day is circa 1980.

3.) COIE; This is where COIE & the events leading up to it happened. This strand has "gaps" in it, due to 3,000 of its universes having been destroyed. Its present day is circa 1985, right _after" the battle at the "dawn-of-time".

4.) COIE Aftermath; The DCU introduced in issue #11 of COIE, its present day is circa 1985-86.

5.) Post-COIE; First seen in issue #1 of Man-of-Steel mini-series. Present day is circa 1990-95.

    6.) Post-Zero-Hour; Present day is circa 2003-05.

7.) Post-Infinite-Crisis; Final Crisis also happened here. Present day circa 2010-11.

    8.) Flashpoint.

    9.) Nu52.

As well as all of the other media adaptations of DC characters.

The alternate earths probably need to be different enough so that they will be interesting to visit some times. Earth where world war 3 just started now. Earth where world war 2 has not ended yet. Alternate earth ruled by crime syndicate is interesting (i just prefer crime syndicate to have more members). I like alternate earth with legacy JL. I also like alternate earth with legacy JSA. Alternate earth with god like immortal heroes who don't age might also be interesting. Kamandi's apocalyptic planet of the animals. Post nuclear war earth where everyone is a radioactive monster. Maybe there can be an apocalyptic earth where people have to wear armor to survive (like atomic knights). Maybe there can be an apocalyptic earth where people are fighting brother eye and omac androids. An earth where nazis won and JL has to fight nazis. Alternate earth overrun by vampires is also interesting. For zombie fans, an alternate earth overrun by zombies is also ok. Alternate earth with martians vs earthlings might be interesting. Earth ruled by dominators. Earth ruled by controllers and darkstars. Maybe an earth ruled by anti-monitor, an earth ruled by darkseid, an earth ruled by highfather, an earth ruled by Lex, an earth ruled by Ares god of war, an earth ruled by JL, an earth ruled by Superman, an earth ruled by Batman, an earth ruled by Wonder Woman, a magic earth ruled by Mordru, earth ruled by Monarch, earth ruled by Hal Jordan, earth ruled by mr mxyzptlk, earth ruled by bat mite, earth ruled by Terry Sloane Mr Terrific, earth ruled by ras al ghul, earth ruled by joker, earth ruled by vandal savage, earth ruled by Spectre, earth ruled by henry bendix weatherman, earth ruled by kobra, earth ruled by grodd. An earth where everyone is a swamp thing. An earth where everyone has powers. An earth where everyone have become gods. An earth where everyone is a cyborg. An earth where all minds become digital. An earth where everyone is a cannibal. An earth ruled by the monsters society of evil. An earth ruled by demons. An earth ruled by angels. An earth where the native americans won over the white invaders. An earth run by cowboys. An earth ruled by soviet empire. An earth ruled by Japan empire. An earth run by the british empire. An earth run by the roman empire. An earth ruled by egypt empire. An earth ruled by jewish empire. Water world ruled by Aquaman and atlantis empire. An earth with visible ghosts. An earth that is a member of the united planets. Earth similar to kingdom come and flashpoint where heroes fight each other. Earth ruled by dinosaurs and reptile people. Earth still in the dark ages. Earth ruled by insect people. Earth where everyone including heroes are employees of corporations. Earth where heroes fight the american empire. Earth ruled by the mobs. Earth where heroes have no secret identities. Earth where heroes fight brave new world genetic engineering. All forest earth protected by Green Arrow and his merry people. Earth of hunter gatherers and no agriculture, no civilizations. Earth of plant people. Snowball earth. Desert earth. Planet of hawk people. Earth full of clones and clone heroes. All women earth where men have become obsolete and extinct. Earth where slave owners won the civil war. Earth with no superman. Knights of the round table with super powers. Earth ruled by Kandor. Earth ruled by Krypton. Earth ruled by Black Adam. Earth ruled by Captain Atom. Earth ruled by Midnighter. Earth ruled by vampire batwoman. Secret Society of Super Heroes. Earth replaced by artificial planet. Earth of teen president and teen JL. Planet of the manbats. An earth where Wonder Woman is not fighting crime in a swimsuit and heroes are finally over the spandex armor. An earth where Lex is feeding everyone soylent green. The possibilities are endless.

I find the concept fascinating, but visually, how would we distinguish between some of these universes as the differences between them are often minute? At a glance, for example, it'd be very difficult to distinguish, say, Post-ZERO HOUR Batman from Post-INFINITE CRISIS Batman.

Interesting take on the DC Multiverse, Ilozymandias, particularly with how you've not only linked the various alternate earths with most of the big "crisis" events, but also separated them by what the present-day time on each alternate earth is.

My Ideal Multiverse isn't nearly so ambitious:

    1. Earth-1: Justice League/Primary Focus
    Silver/Bronze Age inspired universe

    2. Earth-2: Justice Society
    Golden Age inspired Universe

    3. Earth-3: Crime Syndicate
    Evil Opposite of Earth-1

    4. Earth-4: The New Gods
Hey, didn't Jack Kirby title them "The Fourth World"? Seems to me like a perfect place for them to reside

    5. Earth-5: Shazam!/Thunderworld
    Fawcett Comics Imprint

    6. Earth-7: Pax Americana
Charlton Comics Imprint, and since I like Grant Morrison's name for them . . .

    7. Earth-10: Freedom Fighters
    Quality Comics Imprint

Yes, visually the characters don't difference too much.

    Heh. I like math:

Earth 0: Limbo, a la Morrison’s Animal Man run. A “null world” populated by forgotten heroes, and where nothing ever happens. Visitors to this place are rare, and are advised to attend to whatever business brought them here as quickly as possible before the world’s unique qualities makes them forget their own identity.
Earth 1: the real world, where we live.
Earth 2: the first “Prime Earth”, featuring DC’s classic heroes (Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, and so on). That is, home of the original JSA.
Earth 3: the second “Prime Earth”, featuring Marvel’s classic heroes (Captain America, Namor, the Human Torch, and so on).
Earth 4: the first reimagining of DC’s classic heroes, and home of the original Justice League.
Earth 5: the third “Prime Earth”, home of Fawcett Comics’ characters (Captain Marvel, Bullet Man, Mr. Scarlet, and so on).
Earth 6: a world where versions of DC’s heroes coexist with versions of Marvel’s heroes.
Earth 7: the fourth “Prime Earth”, home of Quality Comics’ characters (Uncle Sam, the Ray, Plastic Man, and so on).
Earth 8: a third reimagining of DC’s classic heroes.
Earth 9: a reimagining of Marvel’s classic heroes.
Earth 10: a world populated by both DC’s heroes and Fawcett Comics’ heroes.
Earth 11: the fifth “Prime Earth”, home of Charleton Comics’ heroes.
Earth 12: a different take on DC and Marvel heroes coexisting; I think this might be the Amalgam Universe.
Earth 13: the sixth “Prime Earth”, home of Archie Comics’ superheroes (the Shield, the Hangman, the Web, and so on).
Earth 14: an Earth inhabited by a mix of DC’s heroes and Quality Comics’ heroes.
Earth 15: a world populated by a mix of Marvel’s heroes and Fawcett Comics’ heroes.
Earth 16: a fourth reimagining of DC’s classic heroes.
Earth 17: the seventh “Prime Earth”, home of Tower Comics’ heroes (Agents of THUNDER, etc.)
Earth 18: another take on mixing DC and Marvel.
Earth 19: the eighth “Prime Earth”, home of Milestone’s heroes (Icon, Hardware, Static, etc.)
    …and so on, indefinitely.

That is, you’ve got a “null Earth” (Limbo); a “basis Earth” (our world); a series of “Prime Earths” populated by distinct sets of heroes (DC, Marvel, Fawcett, etc.), each with its own “power set” of variants and reimaginings of those heroes; and a set of “Composite Earths” that mix elements of two or more Prime Earths in different ways.

Before the New 52 came about, this was what I'd hoped to see:

Earth-0: "Ground Zero" for DC heroes, though with a completely rebooted continuity. No Robins at all, for example. Everyone and everything at square one. New #1s are here and this is the Earth with the most accessibility to new readers.

    Earth-1: OGNs

Earth-2: essentially the pre-COIE Earth-2, though Superman and Batman are still alive. Two titles would be set here, one in the GA and the other in the present day with the successors/survivors of the JSA.

Earth-3: Two series set here: Injustice, dealing with the lives of the Syndicate. The Adventures of Lex Luthor, chronicling his adventures as the only super-hero on Earth-3. He'd have a superheroic identity, though I have no idea what his name would be. Other characters like Jester would be here as well.

Earth-4: Home to the post-COIE/ZH/IC/FC continuity. Action and Detective would follow the adventures of the classic Superman and Batman. Other titles would include Wally West: Flash, Worlds' Finest (focusing on the Super and Bat families) Birds of Prey (starring Steph Brown Batgirl, Supergirl, and Barbra Gordon as Oracle) JLA, featuring the original Big 7 with Barry as the Flash and Hal as GL, and GL Corps, starring John, Guy, and Kyle.

Earth-5: The Adventures of Captain Marvel, starring Cap as the sole superhero on his Earth.

Earth-6: Vertigo titles. Return to original numbering of Hellblazer and Swamp Thing.

Earth-7: Sci-fi Earth, with titles starring characters like The Challengers of the Unknown and Adam Strange.

These 8 Earths would be the publishing foundation of DC Comics and each comic would have a banner across the top of the cover indicating the Earth the book is set on. Every comic would also have a blurb on the front page or inside cover briefly explaining the Multiverse concept. Example: "There exists a Multiverse, a series of universes similar to our own, each with an Earth. But unlike our Earth, the heroes of these other Earths are super, their battles titanic, their stories, legendary." (This intro would be followed by a blurb explaining the origin of the character or series and the Earth its located on.)

This "multiversal branding" would also be used with DC Collectibles and other DC related media. Other Earths could be added to tie in with TV series, animated series, etc.

    Another less mathy approach:

The basic structure is that of Hypertime: an infinite network of Streams branching out from each other and occasionally touching each other long enough to briefly interact before once more charting their own distinct courses. New Streams are spawned by retcons or time travel tampering; within a given Stream, it appears like these events alter or completely rewrite the timeline, leading to talk of “doomed timelines” that have supposedly ended.

Each Stream consists of a Multiverse of its own, which can theoretically be as simple as a single world or as expansive as DC’s Infinite Earths or Marvel’s What If Multiverse, with interim possibilities including but not limited to: a handful of connected worlds (as was featured from 1985 to 1999, which featured the main Earth, the Antimatter universe, the Time Trapper’s “pocket earth”, the Milestone universe, and a few others); an elaborate Orrery of Worlds nested inside a Sphere of the Gods which in turn is nested inside a Monitor Sphere (the New 52’s Multiversal structure); or a monster group of 808,017,424,794,512,875,886,459,904,961,710,757,00 5,754,368 billion worlds arranged in a theoretical snowflake existing in 196,833 dimensional space (as featured in Wildstorm’s Planetary).

The Mainstream is whichever Stream DC happens to be focused on at the time. Thus far, there have been half a dozen or so different versions of the Mainstream, more or less as outlined by llozymandius. Each transitioned into the next by means of a cataclysmic temporal meddling known as a “crisis event”; but Hypertime being what it is, you can’t make such a drastic transition without spawning a secondary Stream where the transition never happened. As such, there are still Streams out there where, e.g., the Antimonitor didn’t attack the Infinite Earths and those worlds continued to develop unabated.

The phases of the Mainstream, and the crisis events leading from one to the next, are as follows:

    — The original DCU, from 1936ish to the early 1950s. There was technically only one Earth; but it was temporally unstable and subject to ongoing retcons (that is, “continuity” wasn’t really a thing yet).
    • The first “Crisis Event” wasn’t described at the time it happened, but was described later: the Oan scientist Kronos messed with the beginning of time, triggering the birth of the Infinite Earths. Given that this Crisis Event happened “off-camera”, very little is known about it.
    — The Infinite Earths, starting with Barry Allen’s first appearance as the Flash in Showcase #4 and continuing until 1985’s Crisis on Infinite Earths. This was the first appearance of Earth One, Earth Two, and so on. Contrary to common wisdom, most of the various Imaginary Tales were not worlds within the Infinite Earths, per se, but rather secondary Streams that were spawned by the Infinite Earths Mainstream. Other than spawning numerous “Imaginary Tale” secondary Streams, this phase of the Mainstream was more or less stable.
    • The Crisis on Infinite Earths saw the Anti-Monitor destroy all but five of the Infinite Earths and then merge those five into a single world — though the Antimatter Universe continued to exist as a separate place, as did the “Paradise Dimension” that Kal-L, his wife, Superboy Prime, and Alex Luthor retreated to.
    — From 1986, the Mainstream was unstable and underwent numerous retcons, starting with John Byrne’s Man of Steel. During this phase, DC started exploring some pre-existing secondary Streams such as the Dark Knight Returns and Watchmen, and it started calling them Elseworlds starting with Gotham By Gaslight. This continued until…
    • 1994’s Zero Hour resolved the temporal eddies.
    — The post-ZH phase of the Mainstream was about as stable as it has ever been, right up until around 2003; in the middle of this period, a handful of DC’s heroes became aware of Hypertime. Starting in 2003, we got a series of temporal incursions such as Indigo’s arrival in Graduation Day and Cir-El’s arrival in the Futuresmiths Superman story arc. These events, combined with Superboy Prime’s “Prime Punches”, destablized the Mainstream and made the next Crisis Event possible.
    • Infinite Crisis was the only Crisis Event to not include any conventional time travel; instead, it relied heavily on the Paradise Dimension’s unique connection to the Mainstream’s timeline, first demonstrated by the Prime Punches and then replicated and expanded on by Alex Luthor’s “vibrational tower”. Its conclusion gave birth to the Multiversal structure that’s in use in the New 52, though the actual contents of this new Multiverse got heavily revised by Flashpoint.
    — The post-IC DCU was mostly stable save only for the Final Crisis, which was technically a Crisis Event (like Infinite Crisis), but was something of a dud as Crisis Events go.
    • The most recent Crisis Event was Flashpoint, which gave us…
    — The New 52.

My answer is basically "what Dataweaver said". But if sticking to a 52 universe setup, I have something very specific in mind: three branches of 52 universes for a total of 156. One is the Main Multiverse (denoted Earth 1, Earth 2, etc.), which I can't fully flesh out yet, as a lot of it is drawing from Morrison's current great conception for the Multiverse, and the Guidebook isn't out yet. Elseworlds are very few here, mostly focusing on stories *intended* to be part of a Multiverse, and its Earth 0 is where the main monthly comics would take place; I'll write it out in a couple days. Then there's the Retrograde Multiverse (denoted Earth-One, Earth-Two, etc.), containing popular Elseworlds, Imaginary Stories and past versions of the DC Universe. Finally there's the Mass Media Multiverse, with TV and movie adaptations of the characters for the most part. These Earths can all cross over with one another, but hopping from one set of 52 to another is an exceedingly rare occasion - and of course, in my heart, this is all part of a larger hypertimeline like Dataweaver said. Also, All-Star Superman isn't part of this (nor is our Earth, though there are a couple Earth Primes involved), because it's as far above us as we are above the DC Multiverse within the story itself. While I haven't gone as far as setting up the whole pinnacle-pit/order-chaos thing, though that's presumably a part of it, I picked the Earth numbers with meanings, albeit usually trivial ones. I'm not going to list out all of those, but you can ask if you have a question about one choice in particular, and I'll try to remember what my reason was.
    Buh-bye

To be clear, I'm all for an Omniverse or Hypertime, but I think DC should come up with a set number of Earths that its monthly titles will be split amongst. I think 7 or 8 is a good number. There would, of course, be countless timelines/Earths/however you want to look at it, but they wouldn't all be visited monthly.

However, weeklies could be a great venue for visiting a multitude of Earths. I had an idea a few years ago that is, admittedly, a DC version of Exiles. It would be different since it's a DC title and could make an interesting weekly or series of weeklies.

Justice League Infinity: similar to what Morrison did with Final Crisis and Superman Beyond, a team of heroes is assembled from throughout the Multiverse to tackle certain threats to the Multiverse or other cosmic threats. Imagine the possibilities: George Reeves Superman, Keaton Batman, Kingdom Come Wonder Woman, Jay Garrick, Bruce Wayne GL, David Ogden Stiers Martian Manhunter. And so on. I can't imagine a more fun title.
