Maybe we should set down the basic parameters of what's a cult movie for the sake of this thread.
Patsy Walker on TV! Patsy Walker in new comics! Patsy Walker in your brain! And Jessica Jones is the new Nancy! (Oh, and read the Comics Cube.)

I'd go with these (in alphabetical order):

    Escape From New York
    Reservoir Dogs
    Rocky Horror Picture Show
    The Thing (1982 version)
    The Warriors
Avatar: Here's to the late, great Steve Dillon. Best. Punisher. Artist. EVER!

a lot of these look like genre classics or mainstream movies with a rabidly devoted following.

I wouldn't have a problem seeing "Army of Darkness", "Big Trouble in Little China", or "Donnie Darko" on a cult classic list. but John Carpenter's "the Thing"!?!?

The Thing did fail at the box office. But yeah, it got pretty fucking big after that. And it's not like it's just now being recognized or something, it been huge since home release.

Ok, I'm not one to nitpick these choices, but "The Matrix" is not a "cult" movie. Perhaps we do need some kind of parameters for what qualifies... or at least an explanation for anyone not familiar with the term...

Mine are (and I will stick to 5 since that's what the thread requests):
-- "The Adventures of Buckaaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension."
-- the "Trancers" /Jack Deth films
-- Sho Kosugi's "Revenge of The Ninja" (I also can't help but have an affinity for "Ninja III:THe Domination" for taking the girl from the Breakdancing movies and making her a ninja - genres colliding in a way that could only happen in the 80's )
    -- "Rock & Rule"
    -- "Streets of Fire"

The 80's Rocked!! (ha - I just noticed all my choices are from 1983-84!)

I selected the films from this list.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_cult_films

    Quote:
A cult film, also commonly referred to as a cult classic, is a film with a cult following, obscure or unpopular with mainstream audiences, and often revolutionary or ironically enjoyed. Sometimes, the definition is expanded to exclude films that have been released by major studios or have big budgets, try specifically to become cult films, or become accepted by mainstream audiences and critics. Cult films are defined as much by audience reaction as they are content. Some studios, such as Troma Entertainment, specialize in making cult films.
That's a pretty bad list. Citizen Kane is one of the most universally critically praised movie of all time and The Wizard of Oz is an American cultural cornerstone. I don't think they would qualify in the least. Sure they didn't get the respect when they were first released. But the way I see a cult film, it never gets wide respect except for a very fervent, yet small group of people.

Mallrats on the other hand, I would say qualifies. Most of Kevin Smith's films are done with a small audience in mind, which they never really exceed.
