Action Comics (1938-2011) #1
"You can stay and dance with him if you wish but I'm leaving now!"
I've talked about this scene numerous times before, and I still just love it beyond words. It's pretty much all the reasons I love Lois wrapped up in a single sequence. And while, arguably, it appears that Lois' rejections of Clark are linked to a very problematic view of "what makes a man", especially in the late 30's, can we appreciate that this is just unheard of for a female character at the time of this comic's publications?
She asserts herself, she fights back when pressed, and she doesn't put up with men who don't support or defend her. Lois Lane is an amazing lady, and it's all of these reasons that Clark falls in love — just look at him and his response in that panel where Lois slaps the jerk!
And I will always read Lois' rejection at the end as being an intolerance toward people who don't defend others or themselves in general and not the limitations of acceptable "male behavior."
