Default What year in the comics did WW first fly?

There seems to be some debate on what year WW started to actually fly around on her own in the comics. Lets look into this matter and see if we can settle it.

So what year did WW actually start to fly in the comics and it was easy to see she was flying on her own, not jumping or leaping or anything else like that?

I wasn't aware there was any debate. I thought it was pretty clear cut. prior to Crisis on Infinite Earths, Wonder Woman could only glide on air currents, not fly. In 1987, when Perez rebooted Wonder Woman, she had the ability to fly on her own accord.

    Not exactly.

In the first place, gliding is considered flying. That is the dictionary definition. Non-powered flight, but flight nonetheless.

So WW first flew in May of 1958. 17 years after her first appearance. Which means she has been flying for longer than she wasn't. 56 years.

Secondly, although WW' s ability to fly was explained as learning the skill to glide on air currents, there were many instances where this was shown to not be the case. When Wonder Girl (teenage Diana) and Wonder Tot (little girl Diana) were introduced in 1959 and 1961, they were shown with the ability to fly in space. There are no air currents in space, so they had to have some sort of self propulsion. If you read the first Crisis books, adult Diana is also shown flying in space. Also, just in terms of relative characters, pre-crisis Wonder Girl (Donna Troy) was sometimes drawn as hovering. Something that would have been impossible if she were only gliding on air currents.

This. I'm not to familiar with Wonder Woman's silver age history, but I have read a few Bronze Age stories and she glides about a lot. Though there is a difference because she can't (usually) fight if she is gliding.
