But it is an event. Or a tie-in to one, rather. And got hyped out the wazoo. People were all kinds of curious where this was gonna go.

Unfortunately, high sales for a few desperate folks can only mean one thing.

Let's just put it this way. For a book pretty much soley marketed on featuring a married Peter and MJ with a daughter, more fans voted with their wallets than with their feet.

it was marketed as part of a company changing event. that isn’t “solely”.

though i’ll grant that interest in the marriage is probably a largely contributing factor, a stand alone return to that status quo would have been an easier case to make.

So were all the other Secret Wars tie-ins, but none came close to #1s this high. If sales were super high across other various secret wars tie-ins, it would be easy to make the case that it was due to it being a big event. But the other tie-ins have not come within the same ballpark.

Exactly. This is the only tie-in that has come incredibly close to toppling the actual main event title (which I'm convinced it would have if more lapsed readers were aware of the specific nature of this book).

Regardless, this is the only SW tie-in that has beaten Star Wars. STAR FRICKIN' WARS.

Closest tie-in is Deadpool #1 at 131k. Then Old Man Logan, A Force, and Thors #1s all at 114k. Everthing else is below that, most #1s are well below 100k.

RYVs #1 is the only one close to the main event itself at over 200k.

Thats quite a gap, and very telling that the other tie-ins to this big event are so far below it.

    And this one got hyped.

Thing is that you're assuming the only people that picked it up want the marriage back. RYV had something other tie-ins did not, a will they or won't they controversial element that got folks curious. Not saying there wasn't lapsed readers, but you're making it sound like it succeeded solely on their backs and that's why Marvel should reinstate the marriage.

i haven’t looked at the numbers but is the suggestion here that a spider-man sw tie-in (regardless of marriage) wouldn’t outsell others in the event?

regardless, a stand alone would be a much better indication and easier to separate other factors. what’s the usual % spike for spider-man during a company wide event?

Well, at least we can surely say that RYV's breakout debut is NOT a point for "The marriage drags the story down" naysayers.

controversy does tend to stoke interest.

I know. The Avengers had to die and Peter just had to give up being Spider-Man to get there. Hah.

yeah it’s not like a cross to vampires or anything. it might not be one things all spidey readers have desperately wished for, but it’s certainly not a barrier either.

Glad it did well. I think Marvel already knew it would, though. 'Cause this is so outside of Secret Wars that it doesn't even have to be tied to the event.

The most desperate folks may not be the marriage supporters here.

    Seriously.

I use the exact argument Dan Slott used for Silk getting her own book, and those who are always agreeing with him are now arguing and making excuses against it.

Except here sales were drastically higher than the Silk debut.
