    Default Starfire Appreciation

    DC Forum Appreciation Thread rules:

    1) No negative comments about the honoree of this thread. It's an appreciation thread, not a non-appreciation one.

    2) No negative discussion about any competitors of the honoree of this thread (i.e. John Stewart in the Hal Jordan thread). No ifs, ands, or buts. Find another non-appreciation thread to do that, just not here.

    3) No negative comments about other versions of the character. For example, if you like the DCU version of Cyborg, but hate the DCnU version (or visa versa), just appreciate the earlier version and keep your comments about the latter to yourself.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

With the announcement of her very own ongoing series, it's time for a thread to celebrate the beautiful, alien powerhouse....STARFIRE!

Princess Koriand'r of Tamaran made her stunning debut 35 years ago, in the classic Perez/Wolfman New Teen Titans. A Titan, an Outlaw, a fierce warrior and a compassionate friend, Starfire deserves a spot among comics' premier heroes.

This is the place to discuss your love of Starfire, her role in comics, animation, games and her upcoming live-action debut in TNT's Titans television series.

Im super excited for her new series. I like that cover, and really hope it turns out good. Starfire is too good of a character and really deserves some creative thinking and some reinventing for the modern age. Like Cyborg. Plus its just so nice to see her smile again.

Im happy to see her get some love. She's always been a character I really liked and saw potential in, but that potential was never really reached.

I hope this new solo gives her what she's always needed; a full blown mythology built around the concepts already in place.

I do hope however, that they keep her "sexy". One of the things I liked about Kori was how she challenged conventional ideas and stereotypes about sexuality. If they drop that to make her "safe" I'm going to feel like they've cast aside one of her more interesting themes. I dont want this to sound like a comic fanboy wanting boobs and butts in his comics or anything; this isnt about T&A (the new costume is fine, as far as Im concerned) its about psychology and examining how a woman (or any person) can be honest and open about their sexuality and their appetites, and still be a respectable and upstanding person who does not have to be ashamed of liking sex. Its the reverse of slut shaming, and in this particular day and age, it seems to me that people need a character who turns that on its head.

Well said! I have a good feeling Kori will still exude sex appeal in her new book. I also hope to see multiple looks along the way.

I'm glad that Starfire is receiving her own series as well and I really hope that it is successful. I think its about time that she had her own series. I really hope this explores the DCnU cosmic side, especially the Vega System. I wonder if this title will have anything to do with the new Omega Men series.

I also agree in part with hoping they keep Starfire's sex appeal, but I wouldn't be surprised if DC went the "safe" route with her. Either way, I really want good stories written about her and her people. I really hope that Blackfire plays a role in this series as a significant villain.

Not that crazy about the new look and pupils catering to the cartoon, but I'm a fan of Starfire.

    Perez had it right.

"History of the DC Universe" by Wolfman and Perez, when the DCU use to make sense.

It looks like they are trying to appeal to fans of her animated version. She has the straight hair and irises in her eyes now, as well as her costume being similar to that version. As a big fan of both versions of Starfire, I'm very curious to see what direction the series goes in with her.

If the people in the background of the new cover are any indication, I don't think they're going to be downplaying her sex appeal in the new book. I think the new creative team was perfectly picked for respectfully portraying her sexuality while still keeping it tasteful.
I hope they develop a good rogues gallery for her. Blackfire is one of my favorite baddies, so I can't wait to see her show up.

Perez, the master. Under his pencil, Starfire was such a fresh character - gorgeous, naive at times, sensual and temperamental.

I fell in love with Starfire almost as soon as I ever picked up a Teen Titans comic.

What's not to love? When she's written right, she's warm, kind, sweet, and utterly devoted to her friends. Woe betide any villain who so much as thinks of harming one of Kori's friends! On top of all that nice stuff, she's also a great warrior, fearless and fierce. Her open, red-hot sex appeal just made her even more appealing to me.

So glad to see her finally getting a book of her own! I hope it lasts for years and even elevates Kori's status in the DCU! Like others have already said, I'm fine with the new costume, and I hope she still gets to be the smoldering vixen she's always been, in addition to being the warrior princess with a heart of gold.

Another thing to look forward to about the book? You see that cover art, people? You see that......thing on her face? That's called a "smile." Just in case it's been a while since you've seen such a thing in a modern comic. I hope this book is fun, upbeat, and all about showing Kori's strength of character and her refusal to let the world ever get her down. It can have it's dark moments, but Kori has always struck me as the kind of character who absolutely will not let the world tell her who she is and what she should do.
Though much is taken, much abides; and though
We are not now that strength which in old days
Moved earth and heaven, that which we are, we are,
One equal temper of heroic hearts,
Made weak by time and fate, but strong in will
To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield.

I hope the new series has different art from the cover. It looks too cartoony to me and the pupils have got to go. I don't want Starfire to be too much like her cartoon counterpart.

I also want the Tamaraneans to play a role in this series. Hopefully DC won't have their planets get blown up multiple times like what happened prior to the reboot.

The art will definitely be different than the cover. The regular artist is Emmanuela Luppinachi (sp) and the cover is Amanda Conner

I know, and that makes me a little sad. Ive never watched the cartoon, but as I understand it, she's much more "cute" than anything there. Which is fitting for that particular demographic, but it takes away (in large part) one of the most interesting concepts to explore with Kori. In my opinion anyway. Im hoping for something in between. The cartoon has a lot of fans, and those fans deserve to be able to download and enjoy a Starfire comic and be able to recognize the hero inside. However, us fans who know her as a long standing Titan and Outlaw also deserve to see that version of her character too.

I agree. And they've done wonders with Harley Quinn. I have high hopes for this being a quality product, I just hope that it aligns with my personal tastes and preferences. As I said, I dont want or need T&A (the internet is full of free porn if that's what someone is really after. I dont get why they'd settle for a drawing). "Tasteful" is the word of the day here. But that doesnt mean those particular themes cant be explored.

I believe it will. If I recall correctly, Amanda Conner is credited as a writer, and the artist is someone else. So, we can likely assume from this that Conner will provide the covers, but not the interiors. Basically, this is DC going to the Harley creative team and asking them to work their magic on another fiery tempered, badass chick whose biggest plot point to date has been a relationship with someone from Gotham.
