Default Image Comic of the Week - Week 7 (2/11/15)

So we have another new week from Image this time. Saga last week barely edge out Nameless for the best book of the week last time, with Velvet and Sheltered not too far behind.

This week, we have a new book called The Empty, from Jimmie Robinson (Creator of Bomb Queen and Five Weapons). Not much to say, since I didn't get to read it yet. With that said, let's get to it!

Here's the breakdown for Image comics and the other Indies I read....

    Coffin Hill #15
Kagamigami #1 (New Japanese manga debuting in Weekly Shonen Jump)
Shutter #9 (didn't review. It just came and went)
Satellite Sam #11 (so tedious. Get on with the damn story already!)

Ugh... what a week for comics. Everything just felt so... average and forgettable. I mean, Coffin Hill was the best of the bunch and it was only a 7 out of 10. With the exception of Thor #5 and Harley Quinn's Valentine Day Special (which wasn't even as great as the previous specials), even the superhero comics I read were a letdown. What a depressing and underwhelming week overall.

Next week should be good though with Batgirl, Gangsta. Vol. 5, Manifest Destiny returning (thank God!), Lazarus, and Ms. Marvel. I see an oasis on the horizon...

Southern Bastards was pretty damn good again.

Yeah it's an off-week for me too. Out of these I used to read Shutter, and I'm trying out Five Ghosts with the upcoming special... B
Did notice Image is reprinting Bang! Tango in trade format, that used to be a Vertigo series right?
But yeah nothing for me this week. Still have the God Hates Astronauts trade from last week though, so I'm sorted.

I'm also excited for that. They published a letter I sent them recently, it made my day.

This week was pretty lame. I voted for Walking Dead, even if it wasn't that good, nothing tried to offer any competition.

Elephantmen and Witchblade for me this week. Elephantmen won out, but I admit to feeling more than a little let down that we got a bloody action piece and lost a good chunk of interesting supporting cast rather than more of Horn's reaction to the fact that his son looks 100% human. Especially after how long this story dragged out.

Every time. It's the book everyone should be reading.

Not my cup of tea, I think. The first issue didn't do a lot for me, and manly love-notes to the "real" South turned me off.

It's the only one I read this week, and it did not disappoint.

I don't even really know what that means. Two southern dudes writing a book that honestly looks at where they come from? What's wrong with that? It certainly isn't a glorification of any of the south's negative aspects.

The only Image comic I got (the only comic I got this week, period) was Southern Bastards, but I really liked it and had no trouble voting for it. I like how this arc has been very football-centric since it establishes that as such a core part of the series' foundation.
    Image Comics (TPB):
Saga, Southern Bastards, Injection, Descender, Deadly Class, Chew, Black Magick

    DC Rebirth (Digital):
The Flash, Batman, Green Lanterns, Aquaman

Only 3 Image titles this week, Five Ghosts, Shutter & Southern Bastards, Five Ghosts got my vote.

Yes, it was a Vertigo mini. Kelly must have bought the rights back, and published it through the Man of Action deal with Image.

It is not good, though. Kelly had a bunch of clunkers around that time.

Chaykin-- who did the original's covers, for the uninitiated-- called it "vile," "badly drawn" and "ill conceived." He seemed to take the job because it involved drag queens and he couldn't entirely pass up the chance to do trangressive imagery.
