    - Announce crew wise Don Callis has said Bischoff contacted him and Joey Styles in January 2001 and told them he knew ECW was going down. So with him buying WCW , they were gonna be his new announce crew on the reborn Nitro in 2001 that fall. That him and Joey both agreed they'd do it since they knew ECW was gone.

    - New set as well was gonna debut as Bischoff was gonna dump that strange set they did from 2000-2001.
i wouldn't count on bitchoff at all, also no way was ohaire ready for that spot. i bet the farm that bitchoff would've brought hogan back in at some point, also probably try and rehash the NWO.

Would have been pretty special, I think. Like you said with OHaire and guys like that slowly but surely WCW had also began to grow young new talent ready to take the top spots away from the Hogans and Flairs.

    B]WCW Monday Night Nitro - April 28th , 1997[/B]

Your Hosts - Tony Shiavone , Larry Zybsko & Bobby Heenan

The show opens with clips of Ric Flair from 1993 ...facing Vader ! With Shiavone putting over how Flair proclaims he loves facing big men and the bigger they are , the harder they fall. We see Flair defeat Vader as Shiavone puts over that Nash maybe a big guy but on May 18th , watch out Nash ! And this Nitro will be a special 1 hour edition due to scheduling.

Out comes Roddy Piper and Ric Flair over to the announce booth. Piper claims that things are starting to get close to the cocoo nests folks. That there is a lot of pot holes he heard they left. They must wanna be some young kids who skate board over em. Come on out tonight , we don't have to wait til then. Flair then gets all hyped as he yells if you don't like it , woooo we can go tonight ! The show opens with Nitro opening.

Coming out to start Nitro is Prince Iaukea as he will challenge Dean Malenko for the US Championship. Malenko is defending the belt nearly every Nitro in solid matches and this shouldn't be different. In the locker room area for an interview is Jeff Jarrett who will be facing him at Slamboree. That he is the man of 1,000 holds , but he will also earn Dean's respect like he has the 4 Horsemen and he also will be US Champion.

Malenko and the Prince trade some arm bar reversals , but soon Dean works him to the mat. In a great spot the Prince catches Makenko with a high arm drag tag down into a drop toe hold soon after ! Iaukea stays on Malenko and in a cool spot nails a good back kick to him. Then we see Dean deliver a huge power bomb as Malenko tries a pin attempt and the Prince reverses into a pin attempt ! Dean then catches him with a power slam off the ropes ...which sets up Texas coverleaf for the win ! Shame the match ended so quick.

Out comes Juventud Guerrera for this next match. Shiavone claims there will be 2 title matches in this hour. This seems to be the 2nd of them as Guerrera will be facing Syxx for the Cruiserweight Championship. Juvie starts off with a side head lock and after hitting the ropes does a head scissors take down on Syxx to the floor. Waltman gets back in and later eats a big jumping side kick. Later in a cool spot , Guerrera leaps over , lands a bit awkward and as he gets up Syxx delivers a big side kick to take him down.

Syxx then much later does his bronco buster spot after beating Guerrera down in the corner. He delivers a big suplex holding him awhile as he stays on Guerrera. There is no Hall or Nash out there which is surprising. Seconds later after a double ax handle off top turnbuckle , Syxx taunts by holding his boot there. Then Waltman screws up on Guerrera by climbing the top turnbuckle and is caught. Juventud botches a second and later delivers the frankensteiner into a pin attempt off that top turnbuckle on him ! He gets a near 3 count.

Then seconds later Juventud delivers a nice forward somersault into a drop kick on Syxx. But he misses and Waltman catches him. He makes a sign its ahead as he locks in the buzzkiller finisher and actually defeats Guerrera by fair means. A fact Shiavone brings up that he didn't need the NWO help. Due to NBA playoffs Nitro will be airing at 7pm as well for an hour.

Scott Hall and Kevin Nash are out next as they are joined by Syxx. The group have the WCW World tag team titles which have rarely been defended for months due to Hall's disappearance. On the mic Hall starts us. Hall claims they were sitting in the back and they heard 2 ole dinosaurs named Flair & Piper. Hall claims whateva , no one cares about them. That the crowd there in Norfolk is there for 1 reason and 1 reason only ....its the N-W-O.

Nash gets on the mic and says that their time is coming for Slamboree and that they will get 75% of the gate since they don't come cheap ! Nash , Syxx and Hall tell Hollywood they miss him but the NWO is just 2-sweet ! The music hits as out comes Chris Benoit with Nancy (aka Woman) this time. She leads him out for this singles match. In ring waiting for Benoit is Steven Regal in what should be a good classic match.

The 2 men start with some reversals as Chris is caught with a kick to his back to start. Then we see Regal work him back in reversals to the mat again. In a test of power they work through roll up and bridge type pins , both work through this til finally they get into a standard match . Regal tries a roll up pin but can't bridge it . Finally Benoit snap suplexes Regal and just as this match looks like its gonna be a classic , out comes Kevin Sullivan. Who yanks Regal down from the turnbuckle to brawl with Benoit !

The 2 men go in and out of the ring brawling as suddenly Jacqueline gets involved and Woman stops her. Chris turns and gets met by Meng who locks on the tonga death grip on him. This has Regal suddenly decide to try and stop Meng as Sullivan knocks him to the side ! Jimmy Hart and Woman try to stop Meng til he finally releases as then Benoit lays on the floor as Regal checks on him ? Steven Regal folks doing this.

An NWO vignette shows Randy Savage and Elizabeth that the MADNESS is finally outta control. He mocks DDP and that he's the MASTER. That its time for Kimberly to admit her husband can't handle the Savage. Her man , ain't the man to handle him. You shouldn't have knocked on THE MADNESS door. On crutches Savage is sweating like crazy over this.

Lex Luger and Giant is out as they are teaming again. We get clips at Uncensored where Luger was spray painted by Dennis Rodman. The duo is facing the Amazing French Canadians. Luger starts off quick on Jacques and Carl until both men are able to hurdle him over the top rope in a spot as he lands on the floor. Parker puts the boots to him til Ouellet works him over before tossing him back in.

Both men double team Luger with some work as they keep him cut off. Then Rougeau takes long to pose and taunt fans , then tags in Ouellet who misses a top rope move. The Giant gets tagged in as both AFC guys try and double him in the corner. The Giant tears into both men and eats a big boot apiece. Then finally Giant locks on the choke slam as Lex does the torture rack to Ouellet. Tony promotes that World title shot Lex has earned.

Out comes Steve McMichaels and Debra. Which begs the question why Mongo stayed in the back while Benoit was getting destroyed by Meng minutes earlier ? We get a replay of Reggie White strip sacking Mongo of the case last week. Mongo will be facing Barbarian in this. Barbarian charges in as soon Steve sloppy runs the ropes in a spot with a clothesline. He brawls with Barbarian in the corner but takes too long and eats a kick to the face.

Barbarian throws him to the floor and throws him into the ring railing. Then seconds later puts him back 1st into the ring post. Mongo later in a spot eats a big pile driver. Shiavone promotes the whole Bears vs Packers rivalry that no wrestling fan gives a damn about. While Debra distracts the referee , she sneaks Mongo the brief case as he nails him point blank. It has a big dent in it , Mongo scores the win.

Now comes Piper and Flair as the only one dressed to work is Piper. Flair has the mic as he yells Hooooot Roooood. Why go out and fix what is not yet brooooken ? Flair then dances around and demands the NWO right here , right now ! Hall or Nash he doesn't know about but he knows he can whip Syxx's ass. He's been world champion more times than you Syxx have had pieces of ass. So they throw the mic down as they wait. Then the music hits.

The music ends as Piper pumps the crowd as suddenly out drops ....flyers . The flyers litter the ring and Norfolk scope. There is thousands of them as they keep raining down TRADITION BITES - NWO 4 LIFE. This is wild to see these keep falling as Bischoff had to pay thousands to litter the entire scope as Roddy doesn't look happy. Finally out comes the Outsiders n Syxx after raining the ring with paper.

Syxx charges the ring as Flair meets him and takes him down in the ramp way. Then we see Flair put Syxx in the figure-4 as Roddy is in a trance staring at the paper weirdly. The 3 work over Flair as Piper is off in weird land staring at the paper til suddenly he snaps outta it and charges out with his belt in hand and starts to whip them as the show ends !

THE BAD : With Nitro being an hour long show for so many weeks , they had to jam as much possible in 1 hour. We got some brief solid matches and sadly who approved a short Regal/Benoit match while approving a terrible Mongo/Barbarian ? You kinda wish they had given longer times to Malenko/Prince , Guerrera/Syxx and Benoit/Regal. But the 1 hour time limit due to NBA forced the company to play things close to vest due to not being able to do an over-run with it.

OVERALL : **** Outta 5. No matter even with a 1 hour time limit , WCW answered the WWF's wild 2 hours this week. Good matches and a brawl to end the show to echo what Austin was doing. Of course a big problem WCW had was the brawl wasn't as crazy as WWF's there and had older stars involved.

Benoit, Regal, E.Guerrero, Malenko...the best memories I have of WCW. Some amazing matches they had, the best often being with each other.

I was apparently one the few that really focused on more artistic technical wrestling.
Things I love: Batman, Superman, AEW, old films, Lovecraft

Grant Morrison: “Adults...struggle desperately with fiction, demanding constantly that it conform to the rules of everyday life. Adults foolishly demand to know how Superman can possibly fly, or how Batman can possibly run a multibillion-dollar business empire during the day and fight crime at night, when the answer is obvious even to the smallest child: because it's not real.”

    WCW Monday Night Nitro - May 5th , 1997

Your Hosts : Tony Shiavone , Bobby Heenan & Larry Zybsko

This Nitro is another special 1 hour telecast airing at 7pm due to NBA playoffs on TNT. We get a replay of last weeks Nitro ending as we see Roddy Piper lose his mind over things til he snapped back. Shiavone questions what took him so long as were at announce booth. Flair , Piper and Greene are there as suddenly a NWO sign : Tradition Bites NWO 4-Life appears . Then it drops on a crazed Piper as he yells that's enough and he takes off to the ring with Flair n company.

Back in ring the NWO litter the ring with more fliers. Its like Bischoff has such an unlimited budget he can do this for weeks. All 3 are in ring as Piper has the mic. All he sees is paper , last week he saw and tried to read that. Its only 3 on 1 , he knew Ric would be fine. That he's always been for him and he'll be there again. Piper brings up the 75% of the purse they want , well he don't care for a purse he doesn't care to wear one. J.J Dillon gets in ring and tells Roddy that people are playing mind games , that the NWO and Bischoff are doing this to get at Roddy. That he has 6 kids and he knows he needs money for them. Piper don't care again.

Flair gets on the mic and doesn't care for the NWO , come Charlotte NC and the PPV after it ,...there won't be a pot hole in the road jack ! He is so angry as suddenly music hits as Piper , Flair and Greene are still in ring. The Public Enemy come out as we see those 3 still in ring. They bring up the 75% of the gate deal and finally , the 3 men leave the ring as this makes no real sense for timing and all.

Konan and Hugh Morrus will face the PE since this began 2-3 weeks ago. The Dungeon carry their own table out , which well....is that wise for a team that loves tables like PE ? Anyhow it seems like a mind game Jimmy Hart is trying. The brawl begins as Morrus and Grunge go at it. Morrus is thrown into Hart , knocking him over ! Konan takes down Rocco with a massive clothesline. Later in a spot all 4 men brawl outside as Morrus tries a body splash into the steel ring post.

The PE put half of Konan under the one table as they stack another one on top. Grunge comes flying off the top turnbuckle and lucky for Konan , Jimmy pulls him free ! Grunge's head may have hit the safety rail. Konan sits the table up , legs facing out. In a spot that stuns me , as its an actual wrestling move , Rocco delivers a back moonsault onto both men. The WCW trainer is out to check on Grunge who is still down outside the ring !

Both Dungeon of Doom members take time to pose awhile on both turnbuckles. Then both men suddenly charge at Rocco as he drops down and they run into each other. Later Rock climbs up on top turnbuckle intent on putting Konan through a table. Suddenly Morrus cuts him off and super plexest Rocco onto his own tag team partner off the top turnbuckle through a table ! Both Konan and Rocco is down as the referee raises Hugh's hand. Grunge meanwhile moves slowly outside the ring.

This is like an insane car wreck , yet wildly better than the recent Lesnar/Strowman/Kane match which had tables broken. Anyhow the NWO banners cover the WCW Nitro ones after commercial. Rey Mysterio Jr is next as he shoots silly string and does a Spider-Man impression. 2 weeks ago he took on Syxx and had him on the run til Kevin Nash cowardly sneak attacked him from behind.

Out comes Syxx , Nash and Hall ...all in street clothes. This was supposed to be a return match between the 2 men but Syxx isn't dressed to wrestle. Mysterio ain't leaving the ring as Syxx blindsides him with a side kick to start. Syxx then in the corner tries his bronco buster , suddenly he eats a boot to the groin , as Mysterio starts smashing his head into the canvas. He catches Nash off the apron with a drop kick and then Hall. But the numbers game is too much as Scott Hall gets in ring and delivers an Outsiders edge. The referee doesn't see it and Syxx locks on a buzzkiller.

Dillon , Nick Patrick and security come down as the NWO come down following them. Bischoff claims that JJ has no stroke to do anything as Dillon watches on. Syxx after breaking the hold screams in Dillon's face that if he thinks he can pull the same crap he did for McMahon , he's got another thing coming ! Nash yells this ain't New York. Don't even get in his face as Dillon takes this as the NWO do signs and more.

After a Lee Marshall 1-800 Collect report , we get another NWO entrance. This time its the return of Hollywood Hogan who is out with the WCW World title. He puts the belt over Bischoff's shoulder as Eric goes gaga over Hogan ripping the shirt n flexing. Bischoff then claims they aren't worthy , but so glad he's there. The phones been melting in NWO Arena and when he plans to beat Sting around the arena like an old shoe.

With the Wolfpac watching his back jack ; Syxx , Hall and Nash will be taking care of business at this PPV. He's been buying land as the fans chant STING as he yells for the idiots to shut up. Week after week , he learns how hard it is to be him. Flair screams for Hogan , Piper screams for him , so does DDP. But lets take care of NWO business so bring Sting out to do this. He taunts Sting as he looks around for him. No Sting as he doesn't show . Then Hogan claims , once a GOD ...always a GOD. But we end the promo with Hulk posing down.

The announcers discuss Luger and why Hogan never mentioned him since he has a WCW World title shot ahead. The music hits as out come Steven Regal as its pointed out he's not wearing a robe. This is pure business as Regal will be facing Meng. Last week we saw that Regal/Benoit match that suddenly Meng got involved in. And how Regal tried to help Benoit.

The 2 men go at it as Meng n Regal trade blows. Regal is actually standing up to Meng in this ! Suddenly Regal sees Sullivan as he attacks him outta the ring as Meng uses this to jump his Lordship. He locks the nerve hold on as Sullivan makes him break loose. Then Regal gets up and starts fighting some more as Kevin again makes him break it . We go to commercial.

Suddenly we see DDP's rise and how things have happened where he turned down the NWO. How its led to Savage/DDP. Where there was damaged deeds by Macho Man who jumped Page repeatedly. How Kimberly was hurt and how both men have hurled verbal punches to each other. Diamond Dallas has been snared in NWO net and things have gotten personal quick ! Both men have went toe to toe in this battle and hurt each other.

Page comes out for this interview with Gene Okerlund as he brings up how he beat Savage at Spring Stampede. Its there that Page brings up his history of being in bar fights and how he always fought for everything. That at Spring Stampede that it was a defining moment and Savage you were defined by that moment. Kimberly mocks Savage for claiming she had sex with him cause he has a 1 track mind , and not much else there.

Randy in the crowd mocks that little girl for lying. He then says he hopes Kimberly would stop calling and e-mailing him. That he's more man than her husband. So Page finally tells him he has 2 words for him...DIAMOND ...CUTTER. This leads into a match where Alex Wright is coming down to the ring as he seemingly is a heel now as he jerks from fans now. He'll be facing Jeff Jarrett who has Debra McMichael.

This one starts off with Jeff strutting after an arm drag. Then the 2 men go through some reversals and Wright eats a swinging neck breaker from Jeff off the ropes. Then seconds later off the ropes Wright does a cartwheel to the side and delivers a pin point drop kick in a spot ! Alex takes over heel momentum and starts beating him down in the corner. Then he shakes to Debra turning his back on Jarrett. Bad mistake as this allows Jeff to chop block him into a figure-4 submission for the win.

We get a video spot where Mongo spits on Reggie White. Coming to the ring is the debut of Lizmark , Jr a masked luchadore who looks nearly like Rey Mysterio. Lizmark has competed still in Mexico right now folks. He had been a pro for 5 years at this point and was 25 years old. Out comes ...Glacier ? Really for this ? Anyhow Glacier no longer has the helmet as we know as he's angry it seems.

Glacier does his fight stance but no big time posing deal . This starts quick as Lizmark elevates into the air in a back flip and Glacier delivers his chronic kick ...seconds in ! The win is fast as suddenly Mortis is down to the ring. Beating Glacier down as Vanderberg cheers him on. Suddenly as Glacier is beating down Mortis in the corner , Wraith arrives. He stands and watches as Mortis reverses an Irish whip into a choke slam of some kind. This has Wraith beat down on Glacier as Mortis delivers the flatliner ; a Samoan drop off the 2nd turnbuckle.

Wraith draps Glacier over the top rope throat 1st as Mortis uses his cane to savagely beat down on Glacier's back and kidney's. They finally end this beat down as Larry suggests he find someone to help him even the odds.

After commercial and main event it seems is Harlem Heat vs Lex Luger & Giant. Luger its claimed was hurt over in Japan. But coming out alone is the Giant who doesn't seem to care about facing both guys in a handicap. On the mic he claims that Lex is hurt and not here. But for these 2 he does have a partner ...its DDP. Before the match begins suddenly Savage gets involved to distract Page while Hogan lays him out with one of Randy's crutches !

They are beating on DDP as Savage has Kimberly by the hair pulling her over. In the ring the NWO jump the Harlem Heat as the Outsiders work over Giant with a crutch. Giant is down as Flair , Piper and Greene hit the ring. But the numbers are too much. They toss Greene out to not do too much to him since he's a football player. Greene is basically laid on. Hogan and Savage get on the announce booth , proclaiming the MADNESS , the WOLFPAC and the NWO have everything in control. They mock the family man (Piper) who should have went home to kids.

Where is Sting ? BROTHER THERE IS NO WAY TO STOP US ! HA HA HA . Oh yeah , Kimberly wants me brother. Show ends at that moment.

The Bad : This show should have been called , NWO Destroys WCW Fully. Because the entire show seemed about the NWO destroying everyone from Rey Mysterio Jr to the Harlem Heat at the end. It was just insane to see this Nitro where the heels literally beat everyone and WCW did nothing.

JJ Dillon was supposed to be a big deal but literally does nothing at all and you have to question what is the point of an Authority figure who does literally ...NOTHING ? I mean he makes no decisions. He makes no changes . He literally gets on TV and spends it being mocked by the entire NWO group and Bischoff. In career moves even I question this one by Dillon who seemingly took a fat WCW paycheck to be mocked on TV each week.

A lack of good matches also sunk this episode as maybe Jarrett/Wright was ok , but ended way too soon. I won't even get the sense of why you debut a new luchadore and decide to feed him to Glacier within a minute of a match.

OVERALL : ** Outta 5. The only thing this was , was seemingly promoting a PPV 6 man ahead to Charlotte. Which seemed to be them pushing that Flair would get his revenge at his home town finally. But the entire episode as mentioned before was more of an excuse to proclaim how god like the NWO was really. Hogan literally called himself that and given how inept the WCW was by hiring someone who as an authority figure did nothing ...maybe he had a point here.

    WCW Monday Night Nitro - May 12th , 1997

Your Hosts - Tony Shiavone , Bobby Heenan & Larry Zybsko

This is another 1 hour episode due to NBA Playoffs. The show kicks off with another Bischoff expensive move , signing Michael Buffer to do special announcing. He questions if Baltimore , Maryland is ready ! LEEEEETS GET REEEEADDDY TO RUUUUMBLE. Then Shiavone kicks in as out come Randy Savage sans crutches as he's fully healed up it seems. He takes the mic from Buffer as the MADNESS is loose with Liz by his side.

Ohhh yeaaah , I am healed he proclaims. Last week when DDP attacked him from behind it pumped his adrenaline up and he slapped DDP around , ohhhh yeaaah dig it ! If he's here , tell him to hobble down and he'll slap him Hollywood style ! OHHH YEAAAH. Shiavone claims that Bischoff contacted WCW and that Sting wants to do a one on one interview. After a near year of being silent , Sting will speak it appears.

Out comes Juventud Guerrera to start off Nitro. He'll be facing Ultimate (Ultimo) Dragon with Sonny Oono. This is for the WCW TV championship. Steven Regal has comments backstage and claims that belt means a lot to him. You can take your Hulk Hogan's , Ric Flair's but he's the best wrestler right now sunshine. He's worked himself up from dirty gutters in Blackpool , beating men twice his age. Watch yourself !

Regal has his title shot at the next PPV. This match starts off with some good reversals , roll ups and Juvie nails a nice backwards moonsault off the top rope into a pin attempt ! Then seconds later a nice huricanrana to the floor for Dragon. Later in a cool spot Dragon catches Guerrera with his series of kicks inot the back kick. The Dragon awhile later catches Juvie again and does a spinning crucifix backbreaker to Guerrera !

In another nice spot Guerrera delivers a nice jumping spin kick off the ropes and seconds later catches Dragon with a reverse into a bridge suplex for a pin attempt ! Things are going fast folks as Ultimo tries a under hook back suplex but Juventud lands on his feet and then tries a frankensteiner but is power bombed hard by Dragon ! Ultimo tries a moonsault splash but Juvie moves as Dragon lands on his feet perfect !

Juvie tries a roll up pin attempt off the ropes. Then both men go through pin attempts as its going fast. Later on the top turnbuckle Dragon is able to stop Juventud and delivers a huge super plex. Both men are down from the pace of this. Then through reversals seconds later , they both end up flying outta the ring through the 2nd rope. Sonny Onoo gets involved and makes Juvie hit the apron. Which pisses him off as he grabs Onoo and threatens to lay the lumber. Dragon to not hit Sonny , comes over the top rope rope and delivers a side kick to Guerrera. Sonny then while the referee is distracted uses his kicks to beat up Guerrera

Dragon delivers a frankensteiner off the top turnbuckle and locks in the Dragon sleeper to win this one. Pretty solid opening match and shame Onoo got involved. Because this one was solid without him. In ring after this is Gene Okerlund who will interview Kevin Greene , Ric Flair and Roddy Piper. Its weird that Piper is the only guy who dresses to work each week. While Flair and Greene don't in street clothes.

Kevin Greene is asked if he's chopping at the bit. Greene claims he's never lost at Charlotte and NWO there is 3 things ya can write down. 1) You gotta pay taxes , 2) you are gonna die and 3) In Charlotte he's gonna break his foot off in their ass ! Which has a worried Okerlund quickly snatch the mic as the A-word is said on WCW Nitro for the 1st time ever. Piper laughs over this and slaps Greene on the back as its live TV.

Flair proclaims Charlotte , NC ...its Sunday night . They all will be there LIVE. Piper proclaims he's had some fights in this building. The NWO claim they are big lions. That lions , tigers and bears oh my. This ain't Wizard of Oz , he's not Dorthy and unlike them he's a T-Rex. Then on the small WCW tron in the corner , the Outsiders greet them. They mock Piper and ask if he's hungry because they have an all you can eat diner. Then Syxx mocks Flair by saying he's got Ric's wife ...ohh yeah with a cross chop. Predating Degeneration X folks.

They wish they could be in Baltimore as Hall claims , but there isn't enough cheese to go with that whine. Cause they have cried repeatedly how the NWO don't respect them and its true they don't. Nash gets on there and tells Greene after this PPV he may ask to get traded since he can't show his face in the city. Also the rules have changed again ...this 6 man tag is NO DQ , NO COUNT OUT ! Anything goes ! Because they are just 2-sweet !!

After commercial , we see Steve McMichael with Jeff Jarrett and Debra. Mongo tells us in the camera that Reggie White best watch this. Cause he's gonna show Packers fans how Chicago and monsters of Midway handled them for years. Dean Malenko comes out as ice and is not impressed at all by this 4 Horsemen group. The 2 men try each other out as Mongo mocks Malenko with strength and Dean quickly uses science to take Mongo down with a leg trip.

Dean is caught by Mongo who brushes off a 2nd drop kick seconds later and he looks in trouble. But Dean is a master and quickly drop kicks Steve's knee out from under him. Then in a rare screw up Dean tries a Texas cloverleaf as Mongo throws him and starts beating on him , not selling the knee at all. Fans start a Reggie chant as Malenko rallies back and delivers a drop kick to Mongo. Heenan suggest Malenko work the knee of Mongo but really , the guy won't sell it so whats the point ?

Then as Jarrett distracts Malenko , Mongo delivers a chop block. Mongo delivers a scoot into a power slam as Dean's feet collide with referee. Then as Mongo has the match won out comes Reggie White. Who gets in ring after Jarrett's attempt at helping Mongo doesn't work. White catches him with a monster clothesline and he delivers the worst big splash in history. This has Malenko who acts woozy for a minute , no clue White is there it appears.....strolls over and bridges Mongo in a roll up pin to retain. Debra by accident pushes the referee inside to make the 3 count.

Fans pop huge for Reggie as Malenko is happy he retained. Okerlund is with Reggie who will face McMichael at the PPV this Sunday. Reggie's not mad about Mongo talking about him , but when ya talk about his family and Packer fans ...that is enough. You leave the fans outta this ! Reggie then claims that this Sunday , your gonna see why Green Bay will always be better than the Chicago Bears....ouch.

After the 1-800 Collect spot , Scotty Riggs is out and ready to face one of James Vangerberg's rare oddities. James tells us in camera for weeks people have speculated who this mysterious oddity is. This man is the most dangerous man walking the Earth and his name is WRAITH. Who comes out in red lighting ala how Glacier comes out in blue. Mortis watches the ramp way as Shiavone believes he's looking out for Glacier. In ring Wraith throws Riggs into the corner like he's nothing.

Seconds later Riggs delivers a surprise drop kick but it has little effect on Wraith who then catches him and delivers an epic back breaker as fans pop ! In the corner he delivers a nice kick and then locks on his choke slam with the arm hooked with little effort. Then we see the lights go out as Glacier has the snow effect. He stands and looks at Mortis and Wraith in ring.

After the commercial it appears Glacier did nothing but come out and stare at them. Konan and Hugh Morrus come out as part of the Dungeon. Watching Nitro in attendance is the Baltimore Ravens team of Michael Johnson and Ray Lewis. Teddy Long brings out Ice Train and Alex Wright. Alex takes his time who preens and dances at times. This is a week after he acted like a heel in a match.

Konan and Morrus jump them as Wright lands outside. Ice Train rallies back and delivers a huge power slam to Morrus. Then Wright wants in as Train does a power up to tag him in weirdly. Alex plays to the fans and acts like a heel in this and then makes the mistake of slapping Morrus in the face ! Which pisses him off as Wright tags in Ice Train who isn't ready. Morrus starts beating on Train in anger as Wright jumps off the apron as Long questions his actions.

Later , Train rallies and delivers a big splash as he wants to tag in Alex. But suddenly Alex claims he has a bad knee and jumps off. This leaves poor Ice Train at the mercy of 2 guys who double team him. Morrus delivers a nice spinning neck breaker and seems ready to deliver the no laughing matter moonsault but stops weirdly. He then goes over and lets Konan hook on his submission for the win. All while Wright preens and tells us in the camera he's the greatest and so sexy.

Shiavone runs down that last week the NWO completely took over and dominated last week. He shows clips of the NWO dismantling Page basically. As they show the clips they have to cut away as backstage something is happening. It appears that Nash , Syxx and Hall jumped Roddy Piper and hurt his hip ! The artificial one he had had put in 1996.

The NWO music hits as Bischoff comes down for this interview. Bischoff is happy and clean shaven in this. Bischoff is so touched by the fans , makes him wanna cry. That this place is where it all started. Eric claims he promised the world he'd let em hear from Sting ...so he's a man of his world. Eric is sweating due to all the black. Out comes another bogus NWO sting who clearly is not him.

Bischoff acts scared and claims he didn't need to bring the bat , as he's acting an announcer. Fans chant they want Sting. Eric rips into Sting by claiming that isn't it true by even his own family that he's always been compared to Hollywood Hogan. Isn't it also true he'll never accomplish what Hollywood has in this industry ? Each time the fake Sting nods. Then isn't it true , way down ...deeeep inside he'll never measure up to Hollywood. Then fans explode as the real Sting slowly makes his way down as Eric looks like he just pissed himself in fear.

The fake Sting is goaded by Bischoff to use the bat as Sting slowly enters the ring and then reveals he has a bat as well. The fake Sting is scared shitless now as he begs off , then cowers. Sting delivers the Scorpion death drop (backwards DDT) and looks at Bischoff who runs for the hills through the fans. Shiavone questions why he won't give the interview now teasing Eric for being a coward.

THE BAD : Unlike last week where the NWO completely destroyed everyone , this week they left it only to Piper who took a beating backstage. This show had an ok balance of matches and some were insanely placed. Like who decided to make Ice Train/Wright vs the Dungeon a main event wrestling match ? Why not Dragon/Guerrera or the Mongo/Malenko match ?

OVERALL : ***1/2 Outta 5. A great opening match and promos mixed in to hype the big PPV 6 man tag ahead. WCW sold its important top matches which was the 6 Man tag match and the Reggie White/Mongo McMichael one. Now with the PPV happening in Charlotte and the resulting return of Ric Flair. The heroes would win this match as Flair would score some payback after waiting 6 months to return. In a shocker Reggie White lost to Mongo . Which is surprising.

    WCW Monday Night Nitro - May 19th , 1997

Your Hosts - Tony Shiavone , Bobby Heenan & Larry Zybsko

This again is a 1 hour show due to the NBA Playoffs airing on TNT. Shiavone shows us a clip of Piper , Flair and Greene all celebrating the win over the NWO. The crowd pops and we see Flair , Piper and Greene share a hug of celebration. This is the biggest moment in the war between WCW vs NWO and its only the beginning !

Gene Okerlund introduces us to Nitro which is rare. He pumps the crowd as this show is in Asheville , NC. Flair comes out all smiles as his return after months away was successful. The Party Okerlund claims is spilling over from Charlotte to here ! Flair marvels at the huge crowd , they are LIVE...IN ASHEVILLE NC ! Last night he claims the greatest thrill of his wrestling career happened. He erased self date , he erased a difference in philosophy with the big boys of the NWO ! Thanks to Kevin Greene and Roddy Piper he did that. Instead of putting this to the side , he now wants back in for this !

Syxx comes out all mad , claiming that they didn't accomplish nothing last night since they pinned the wrong guy. Waltman claims he heard Flair weeks ago claim he didn't know if he could take Nash or Hall , but that he could take Syxx. Anyhow after last night Syxx claims he knows for a fact he could take Flair. Ric removes his jacket as Syxx claims he dominated him. If Flair has the guts , they can do it tonight. Flair to stir things claims again he can take Syxx's flyweight ass ! This leads both into hand slapping each other as Flair goes after Syxx as he takes off .

Coming out to start the 1st match is Prince Iaukea as he'll be facing Steven Regal. Who regained the WCW TV title from Ultimate Dragon. This is a rematch from months earlier where Prince won. The fans begin a USA chant loudly to stir up Regal. Things start off quick as he delivers some European uppercuts , then backs him into the corner with hard palm strikes and more. In a funny spot Prince catches him with a sunset flip off the top turnbuckle and manages to get him over for a pin attempt.

Later in a spot Iaukea attempts the crucifix pin which he defeated Regal with months earlier. This time Regal's able to kick out. Then later in a spot Iaukea tries to fool Regal with another possible move in the turnbuckle and is thrown face forward , eating canvas ! Regal delivers kicks and a version of Randy Orton's punt. Then in a beautiful reverse suplex as he makes the Prince land on his face again. He hooks in Regal stretch for the win. Don't call him Lord anymore Shiavone claims as Heenan questions why.

Last night we get clips of Glacier being self destructed by Wraith & Mortis. In a spot Mortis rides on Glacier's shoulders and drives him face 1st into ring steps in a spot I had never seen before . The once in ring as they beat on Glacier a mystery man appears and starts doing some nice side and back kids to both men. He then poses down as Shiavone claims that this was full contact martial artist Ernest Miller.

The next match is an NWO Japanese member Mashiro Chono who gets no entrance graphics as the match seemingly was thrown on TV . He's facing the Squire David Taylor . Fans chant USA so no clue who that is for. Chono shows off his power and flexes. Mike Teney joins us to inform us that Nitro on June 30th will see the debut of a new star for WCW. That is all he can say. In ring Taylor does a nice cartwheel and off the ropes into a drop kick. Which is impressive for a man his size folks.

Shiavone and Teney discuss the NWO's spread to Japan. In ring Chono delivers a big atomic drop off the ropes. The NWO shirts are huge sellers there and 53,000+ fans packed an arena for a NWO Japan main event. In ring Mashiro dares Taylor to hit him and shows his strength as he throws him through the 2nd ropes. Later back in ring in a spot Chono delivers a nice neck breaker. Teney claims that Chono was trained by the legend Lou Thez.

After brief rally by Taylor , Chono catches the Squire in a STF finisher. Not a bad match for 2 guys who may not have understood each other. Okerlund stands with Sonny Onoo who claims he can make or break a champion. Chono he threatens he will teach him a lesson. That he has gotten someone next week for him. Mashiro demands to know who this worst nightmare is , as Sonny claims he's gonna make him sweat ! That he won't reveal it and its payback for months ago. Yes only Onoo would wait 6 months to get back at someone.

We get a taped clip of J.J Dillon who informs us that the WCW Executive committee has met and allowed Nick Patrick to return as referee. Its on a probation basis for 30 days to watch his behavior. Then comically WCW replays it without realizing they aired it once. Its amazing that Dillon has been part of WCW for like 2 months and he only has decided to allow a referee back. There is no reaction as they try and play off that fans were still upset on Patrick. The truth is no one gives a damn.

M.K Wallstreet comes out as he has a WCW crossed out shirt. He claims that WCW may try and force him to not wear NWO shirts but he's NWO 4-Life. He's facing Scotty Riggs as this starts off with some nice reversals and Riggs delivers a pin point drop kick off the ropes. Scotty then screws up a spot as he tried monkey flipping Wallstreet and lands flying backwards. This allows M.K to take over as he delivers a back suplex.

Wallstreet argues with Patrick in a spot , then gets caught in a near small package pin attempt. But he stays in control and soon throws Riggs to the floor. They argue some more as Wallstreet has a set of brass knucks as Patrick grabs at them. This allows Riggs to come off top turnbuckle and do a roll up pin attempt. M.K tries to hang onto the ropes as Patrick is forced to kick his hands as this allows Riggs to get the 1...2....3. An angry Wallstreet yells that Nick Patrick will pay for this.

Gene Okerund takes time to show us the new deal Bischoff has done and its with Nascar and the WCW car. Mark Martin comes out with Ric Flair. They will be doing a car giveaway and its through Valvoline. Martin was a very successful driver and in his career won 40 Nascar races and would actually race up til 2013. Flair claims he's gonna run completely over Syxx tonight !

The Horsemen music hits as Shiavone cuts it off , as we soon see Randy Savage in ring talking trash about Page. Unknown to Savage , Page has the crutch and its not til he enters the ring that Savage takes off. Anyhow Bischoff comes down as they go up the ramp. So DDP gets on the mic and asks about feeling THE MADNESS. Anyhow he then rips Savage that he has a prior engagement at washing Hogan's car and kissing his ass. This has Savage decide to come to the ring as he eats the metal crutch.

Buff Bagwell and Vincent soon eat the crutch as it shatters finally. Page takes the remains and lays out Bischoff with it. Scott Norton is finally able to catch Page and rip off his shirt. They start to gang Page until the Giant arrives. The NWO take off as Page pleads for them to come back. Finally the Horsemen music hits again and out comes Jeff Jarrett and Mongo Michaels. The Horsemen are facing Steiner Brothers.

Jarrett starts off with Scott as he gets arm dragged across the ring. He seconds later catches Scott with a arm drag and walks over him mocking in a spot. Later Jeff catches him with a suplex and gets cocky. Scott sits up and shocks him with a guerrilla press slam. Scott then in an epic wild spot that shows just how agile he really was then , gets Jarrett up on the top turnbuckle and pretty much powers him onto his shoulders in a Samoan drop from there !

Jarrett tags in as Mongo shoves Scotty and demands Rick. So Scott does and in a spot the 2 men trade wild punches as Rick takes Mongo down with some stiff shots. Then after Mongo's able to do a small chip block , Rick powers him over in a type of side suplex as fans chant REGGIE. Rick climbs up as Mongo is off where he's supposed to be in ring so Rick has to try and watch how he does a bulldog off the top turnbuckle on him.

This leads to all 4 men brawling as Scott is thrown outside by Jeff. Who gets the loaded briefcase. He is about to use it as Kevin Greene arrives and stops him. Scott has recovered and pulls Jarrett out as Greene takes the case and smashes Mongo with it as payback. The referee none the wiser as this allows the Steiner's to win. Mongo is PISSED as he demands the cameras go to the back with him. After commercial we see that Greene was in locker room as the 2 men collide as WCW Security break it up.

Syxx comes out as he's still WCW Cruiserweight champion. Flair comes out in style as he quickly removes the robe as this is gonna be a fight. Syxx starts off jumping Flair in the corner with a spinning back kick. Flair quickly regains himself as Syxx tries to bronco buster the top turnbuckle. This allows Flair to start kicking and punching him down. Syxx starts to take advantage with a spinning heel kick off the ropes as outta nowhere , for no reason Scott Hall & Kevin Nash attack.

The fans are so tired and pissed at seeing their home town guy get beat up by this they literally pelt the ring with garbage. They just turn completely as Nash eats a soda. Hall delivers an Outsider's edge. More trash in the ring as Nash delivers a power bomb as referees try and get this to end. Randy Anderson gets punched by Nash as Kevin gets on the mic. Its there Nash mocks Flair over the greatest night he had. This must be the worst.

Now the NWO is about putting these old folks outta the business like Ric Flair tonight. They send a warning to Piper to be packing ole man and stay on that mountain. Hall gets on the mic and mocks Flair. Call the Smithsonian and call that dinosaur exhibit . When your NWO , your just too sweet.

Then after the commercial out comes more NWO music as Eric Bischoff comes out for this. Even Larry is like , whats the point of J.J Dillon right now. Tony tries to bring up this silly booking nonsense. Bischoff they claim is no longer in power , but he still has power ? WTF does that mean in WCW language ?

Bischoff proclaims his love for everyone. He gives props to Syxx , Hall and Nash. Claiming ya don't wanna make them mad. Last week he had something special planned for Sting in Baltimore. He claims that he went everywhere to speak in person. Bischoff looks up repeatedly. Sting's not up there , he's not in Asheville. Bischoff then proclaims that Sting is a lying gutless coward. People claim he's full of hatred for Hollywood Hogan. But he's not even worth Hollywood. He should worship the ground Hollywood walks on , the breath he speaks.

The fans chant for Sting , as he mocks them. He knows they all love Hollywood. Eric then details how if Sting was right here , he'd love to slap the paint right off him. Suddenly in the corner the ring cuts open as fans ERUPT. Sting emerges and stands behind Bischoff. He yanks him by his hair and delivers the Scorpion death drop as fans ERUPT in celebration. Bischoff is clearly out as Sting looks out at everyone. Heenan tells Sting to do it again as the show ends. No NWO members come out for Bischoff.

The Bad : This Nitro was just an odd duck of people involved. They dragged out Masashiro Chono after so long not appearing and even didn't show his graphics. Which either they forgot who he was or the match was thrown together quick.

In terms of bad ideas , after a night where Flair conquered the heels finally in a feel good moment in his home town , close to it he gets dismantled again. The fan reaction was so raw. They clearly were tired of Flair being destroyed each week by the NWO. The anger was shown when they pelted the group with garbage in ring, Why WCW felt they couldn't wait at least 2 weeks to have Flair be destroyed again is kinda silly but sums up that era where they were worried how Flair was more popular in the south.

OVERALL : ** Outta 5. WCW started to push the Sting angle more as it was on a slow steady simmer for weeks. The hottest angles were Savage/Page and Sting/NWO. Lucky for WCW , next week the show would go back to a full 2 hours as the NBA Playoffs were done on TNT. So better full matches would be a nice selling point for the program.

    WCW Monday Night Nitro - May 26th , 1997

Your Hosts - Tony Shiavone , Mike Teney , Bobby Heenan & Larry Zybsko

This Nitro opens with the NWO music as they are in Nashville , TN. Bischoff comes out none to happy it appears. He gestures for Hollywood Hogan who comes out playing air guitar with the title. Ripping the shirt in style as he poses down. The announcers bring up how Sting shocked everyone and dunked Bischoff last week to end the show. This is the 1 year anniversary of the whole Scott Hall appearing to kick start NWO.

Bischoff claims that there is no little Stingers under the ring now Hollywood. Hogan tells Bischoff he's the reason this is all happening. That he's the reason that he's taking it easy filming movies , doing the Bahamas with family. When that little bitty Stinger lays his hands on you ; he's in deep doo da brother ! For the few few Stinganites out there , for those who worship him. Well Sting's afraid of the Outsiders , he's afraid of Syxx. #3 , Sting you yellow belly coward come out ! I'll take care of you brother.

Bischoff chimes in to say they looked up there , down there and everywhere. Hogan claims he's gonna start gonna search for him all over. Come out Sting , I'm calling ya out brother ! He tells Hollywood to show the audience the guns as he poses down. Shiavone is now joined by Teney earlier in booth with Larry as he welcomes us to this Memorial day Nitro and 2nd one for the program. The audio is kinda low for this show.

The 1st match starts as its gonna be a 6 man Cruiserweight match and have stars from Mexico involved. Hector Garza is making his WCW debut and will be teaming with Juventud Guerrera and Super Calo. Teney promotes this as this is a great showcase for the luchadores for Nitro. This is lucha rules no tags needed as Larry is surprised by that. They are facing La Parka , Ciclone , and Damian as Teney explains why there is no tags in Mexican matches.

Juventud starts against La Parka as he slaps La Parka . The 2 men trade some reversals and finally Guerrera nails a back kick. Juventud catches Guerrera off the top rope and sits him on the top rope for a potential power bomb. Juvie nails a huricanrana and La Parka takes off outside the ring as Super Calo and Ciclone is in. More quick paced work as Calo performs a nice front head scissor take down. Then in shades of ECW , Super Calo does a front somersault suicide Dive to Ciclone and goes into the crowd as the announcers bring up he went flying over the guard rail !

The audience pops huge for this as Guerrera and Garza help him out. Garza does a nice back somer sault landing on his feet. Then another one as he lands on his feet and catches Damian with a tilt the whirl back breaker in a spot. Outside the ring he does a wild corkscrew to the floor from top turnbuckle on Damian ! La Parka delivers a running front leg kick as he's in . Ciclone and La Parka perform a double team on Guerrera as different guys are coming in. Garza and Ciclone are now in as things are so insane with this lucha rules match.

Damian trips and holds Garza as he signals for a move by Ciclone but someone grabs him outside the other side. In ring is La Parka and Guerrera ; and Juventud eats a running power slam and gets a 2 count. Outside later Juventud and Damian crash to the floor , then later Juvie grabs La Parka and arm drags him in a sense to the floor. Then one by one each guy does a body splash to the floor. Finally Hector Garza delivers the twisting cork screw plancha to the floor , his trade mark. Back in ring Garza showcases more as he delivers a big power bomb and does a back flip splash to Ciclone to get the win !

What an opening match folks. Now coming out is Psychosis as Shiavone promotes this Nitro as a very international Nitro. With guys from Mexico , Germany and Japan, From Germany is Alex Wright who is still doing his heel turn as Shiavone claims he has a new demeanor. Wright and Psychosis start by testing each other and works him into an arm bar.. After some reversals and a nice cartwheel , Wright delivers a big side kick in a spot.

Alex delivers a Perfect plex type move and tries a pin attempt for a 2. But he stays on heel control working him over. Its then Alex takes time to dance for us as Larry jokes he's still working through things with his new attitude. Later in a spot Psychosis delivers a nice backwards somersault splash onto Wright for a pin attempt. Then later in a spot Alex lands crotch 1st on rope as Psychosis delivers a side kick off the top turn buckle another pin attempt.

Then in a silly moment outside , Alex dances as his back is to the ring. He doesn't see Psychosis climb up top turnbuckle and he turns as he comes off. Psychosis does a corkscrew splash to the floor on him but lands pretty badly. He nails the guard rail and he limps awhile after it. Back in ring Psychosis in a surprise delivers a guillatine leg drop off the top turnbuckle for the win. A fact poor Alex reacts in anger slapping the canvas. Post match he argues with the referee.

Gene Okerlund stands with Sonny Onoo and the nightmare for Chono tonight. Sonny won't reveal who it is as Sonny calls Psychosis over as he claims he has a deal for him if he's interested. Psychosis is game for it. Out comes Madusa who spooks Sonny by demanding she get a title shot for the Women's title. That she'll do almost anything it seems for a title shot. Sonny makes a career match that if she loses at Great American Bash , she will be forced to retire. She has 15 seconds to answer and Madusa whispers it slowly and finally she accepts it. The match is set for that PPV.

They show an Ernest Miller clip from the Battle of Atlanta karate tournament that he did. He has extensive knowledge of martial arts and Glacier is a long time friend. Coming out in red is Wraith. Who in his look comes across as someone from Mad Max. With James Vanderberg is Mortis as they bring up this oddity team. With them is Glacier's helmet on Mortis staff. In ring is Mark Starr who will be facing Wraith.

Starr attempts a lock up and gets smacked in the stomach as the beating is on. Wraith works him over in the corner and later in a spot he delivers a big tilt the whirl back breaker to Starr. Vanderbeg later in a spot distracts the referee as him and Mortis work over Starr outside the ring. In a spot to show how athletic this big man is , he climbs top turnbuckle and delivers a flying clothesline off there. Starr after a big kick ...delivers the death penalty type choke slam finisher. Vanderberg taunts Glacier in the camera as post match the 2 men beat down Mark Starr.

After the commercial Villano IV is out for action. Coming out to face Villano IV is Konan who isn't with Dungeon of Doom. On the split screen a none too happy Hugh Morrus discusses how Konan tried to further his career. Its none to wise to pick on laughing man as Morrus cuts a pretty serious promo with a rare laugh. Konan in ring acts to shake hands and nails IV later in a spot with a rolling clothesline spot. Then a rolling sit down kick.

They bring up how Konan wanted to be the leader in Dungeon but there is only 1 leader as Larry claims. He yells viva Mexico and more to the crowd to get some heat during his working over Villano. Finally Villano IV does a type of arm drag using his leg. Finally in a later spot we see Konan deliver a big power bomb from the corner to IV. Then from the back comes Hugh Morrus who suddenly is cut off by WCW Security and Doug Dillinger for some odd reason. (where are these guys when NWO is destroying WCW guys ?)

All of them physically hold Morrus back and after Konan taunts Morrus he delivers the cradle DDT to Villano IV. Then locks on the Tequila sunrise half Boston crab finisher with arm lock. Post match Konan tells us he's an OG and some Mexican words. In ring is Gene Okerlund who is gonna interview Konan. Kevin Sullivan is on a self imposed sabbatical. Okerlund asks him to speak English. Its there Konan brings up lack of leadership Sullivan has done for the group and goes ..."Its taken you a year to handle Chris Benoit..."

Konan rips Sullivan for Jacqueline and that she's not leading anything. He then claims that his ex old lady (Nancy) is out getting another man. You just a b--ch as Okerlund has to try and edit that. Its brought up about Morrus and calls him Pillsbury fat boy and that he'll perform a 187 and he's ready to ride if he comes out again. VIVA LA ROSA !!

After a WCW Saturday night plug out comes Sonny Onoo who comes down. He claims that he has the nightmare for Masahiro Chono and its the return of the Great Muta ! Who hasn't been back in the company since 1990. Its brought up that Muta has been recruited by Chono in Japan and like Sting no one knows his allegiance. Chono comes out with a NWO shirt and samurai sword. Muta reveals himself and he looks like he did from his last stint.

Of course he's older and a bit bigger from last time. He then sprays the green mist as fans pop. The 2 men point and look at each other as Sonny ducks behind Muta at times outside the ring. The 2 men have a stare down as Muta seems puzzled as Sonny yells for him to attack. Finally a lock up as Muta locks in a head lock as Sonny keeps demanding things. Muta is not happy at being ordered. Finally in a spot ...Muta turns and sprays the RED MIST on Sonny as fans pop. Because they have wanted to see Sonny take a beating for months.

    end of Part #1

Chono claims Muta is NWO as he holds up the beaten Sonny's face as Muta takes pictures. He then gets handed a NWO shirt as the mysterious Muta takes it slowly. A crying Sonny claims he can't believe Great Muta did that.

Coming out is Barbarian with Jimmy Hart. Barbarian will be facing Jim Powers who still has a job in WCW. Powers has Teddy Long still as his manager. Shiavone claims that a 19 year old told him that she hasn't missed a WCW Saturday Night in 8 years. Also she's watched every Nitro. Powers and Barbarian collide in a shoulder tackle as they both bounce. Then Powers attempts a running lariat as it doesn't effect Barbarian. He eats a clothesline as he tries again.

Barbarian picks up Powers in a spot by his throat and throws him with ease into the corner in a spot. Later in a spot Barbarian picks up Jim and takes him back 1st into the ring post. Then later in a spot Powers and Barbarian try slapping each other down but the Barbarian wins this. In a spot even later Jim Powers catches Barbarian with a boot in the corner. Jim then tries later a flying body splash but is caught in mid air and power slammed. This sets up the big kick from Barbarian for the win.

Gene Okerlund is at ringside to interview Barbarian and Jimmy Hart as out walks up Chris Benoit with Nancy. Its there Benoit tells Jimmy he heard Sullivan has went home to collect himself and that he's tired of this same song and dance. He wants to know what he has to do to get Kevin Sullivan in ring. Jimmy Hart brings up that the road to Sullivan is through Barbarian. Benoit removes his jacket and demands they go now. But Hart claims that it won't happen tonight , its gonna happen next week in 7 days.

After the commercial its said that Giant will face 3 men tonight. He comes out with Luger as company. Its claimed that a major star will be making his debut June 30th at Nitro in Vegas. No clue if he's WCW or NWO. Johnny Swinger attempts at going at Giant and fails. He tags in Jerry Flynn who tries a bunch of kicks as he's a martial artist. Now in is Rick Fuller as he's the biggest one. The Giant throws Fuller into the corner as all 3 charge in. The Giant throws all 3 men . Then in a cool spot Giant picks up Flynn as Swinger eats that in like a drop kick !

Giant then back drops Flynn and Fuller together. Swinger comically comes off the top rope with an attempted double ax handle and is caught. He eats the choke slam and Giant delivers each one a choke slam as fans pop huge. The Giant pins 2 guys as Shiavone claims this was a wipe out. Luger is selling a kayfabe injury from Japan as Tony claims. In ring to interview them is Gene Okerlund. The world now knows that at Bash at Beach ; Hollywood Hogan & Dennis Rodman signed to wrestle together.

Luger claims he's always been a NBA fan and he wants to see how Rodman moves and works. Cause he over stepped himself months ago when he spray painted him and put boots to him. Rodman wear your nicest dress , dye your hair 17 colors , cause you know what they say about pay back. Then Lex removes his shirt and taunts Rodman that your gonna look at Hogan and go OH MY WHAT DID YOU GET ME INTO ? Giant calls Hollywood a shy lark and that he knows he's in the building. Hogan the Giant is coming ...FOR YOU !

Syxx comes out and cuts a promo claiming that Nick Patrick's reinstatement means his decision at Slamboree don't count weirdly. Then he mocks Flair by showing the beating he took. Now for the big treat folks , cause they got it going on ...THE WORLD TAG TEAM CHAMPIONS ....Scott Hall & Kevin Nash. They are the WOLFPAC baby. Hall brings up how sweet memories they had of that drag queen Flair who took a beating again . Along came the b & w express. Nash mocks Piper as he brings up how Roddy's been bragging he put them to sleep (him and Hogan) , well the only way that happens if they make em watch one of his movies !

Nash then issues a challenge to Piper and Flair . They will put the WCW World tag team titles on the line if they can get off the hospital machines. Also Roddy didn't ya tell your kid you were gonna retire ? Well the Outsiders will make sure you keep that promise and retire you for good. Cause as they all chime in... WERE JUST ...2....SWEEEEET. We get a replay of Kevin Greene who took out Mongo as payback. Those 2 men will face each other at Great American Bash PPV.

Coming out is Jarrett & Mongo with Debra. The 2 men will be facing the Harlem Heat in a tag match. At the commercial we get the NWO commercial where Hall & Nash claim you thought you had all the NWO merch ? WELL THINK AGAIN....NWO 4-LIFE SHIRTS !

Booker T mocks the whole football players thinking they can wrestle as he wants Mongo in ring. This has a fun lock up attempt as both tease each other. Finally Mongo delivers a shoulder block. Then later as he thinks he's great , Booker lays into him with some punches. Booker has to walk Mongo through spots and finally in one he eats a lariat from him. Kevin Greene joins us on commentary. The Heat then double team Jarrett.

Greene brings up why he did that last week , but he brings up revenge and how he did. Jarrett delivers a nice back suplex and later in a spot from Stevie Ray delivers a nice sit down body slam move. The 2 men work over Jarrett til he makes the tag to Mongo and the 2 men do a double team back drop. Mongo eats a surprise spot as Heenan comically stirs the heel pot as he tells Greene he heard he begged security to keep him away from Mongo.

Mongo later in a spot eats an ax kick from Booker. They keep on Mongo as he plays the face in peril role weirdly in this spot. Booker in a spot slaps Mongo and basically tells him the spot so he'll remember to execute it. As Booker comes off the ropes , he eats a power slam. Mongo makes the hot tag to Jarrett who delivers a couple drop kicks and works both men til Mongo jumps in to help. Then suddenly Mongo takes off and leaves Jeff Jarrett. The 2 collide with kicks and punches as Jarrett has no clue this is happening. WCW Security try and break this up as Jeff locks in a figure-4. But eats a leg drop from Stevie. Then they do the double team where Stevie holds up Jarrett , and the big Harlem side kick from Booker for the win.

Post match Jarrett questions what happened to Mongo as Debra has no clue. That they are in this together but he's losing patience with it all. After the commercial out comes Hollywood Hogan with Bischoff. As they bring up this search for Sting they claimed. Eric before he enters the ring makes sure to check under it again.

Bischoff claims don't ya love these people ? Hogan claims he does and then claims that he's putting the NWO World title on the line. That the brothers backstage found that little Sting. But sadly as Bischoff claims , Sting won't be here. Because if he was here they would make him worship the ground Hollywood walks on ! Then as they mock Sting up from under the ring comes....a fake Sting ? Bischoff orders the fake Sting to get on his knees and tell the truth . You wish you were half the man Hollywood is. The fake Sting nods as Bischoff pleads that Hogan make Sting worship the ground he spits on !

This is going on as suddenly the real Sting drops from the rafters and gets Bischoff again. Hogan slowly turns as he is stunned as Sting threatens him as he trips backwards over fake Sting. Then he takes off running up the aisle. Its there fake Sting tries to hit Sting and eats a ball bat to the side. He then gets dropped by Sting as quick. Hogan has the NWO come out as they get all around the ring as Heenan pleads they stay with this as we see Sting point at them all. Then we watch Sting hook the harness and with a gesture is gone into the air as the show ends !

THE BAD : The only real bad moment was the slowing down of good matches in hour #2. I know the company wanted to sell Mongo/Greene as a PPV match but did we need a long tag team match for this ? Also how many times have Harlem Heat faced him & Jarrett ?

OVERALL : **** Outta 5. Nitro was back cooking at 2 hours and giving solid great matches for the hour to start. That luchadore match highlighted what made Nitro rock. Even Barbarian vs Powers was decent as a big man match. WCW was clearly clicking on all gears as Sting/Hogan continued to be the long term build. Also here is how strong WCW was direction wise , Bischoff was already selling Bash at the Beach 2 months ahead with a Hogan/Rodman vs Luger/Giant PPV clash then. This was how strong he had things running then.

    WCW Monday Night Nitro - June 2nd , 1997

Your Hosts - Tony Shiavone , Mike Teney , Bobby Heenan & Larry Zybsko

The episode just opens with the NWO intro music. In ring we just see Syxx and Scott Hall which is quick for this as it has no entrance from the guys. Hall claims he smells something cause , they are the STUFF. Hall claims that they been hearing from fans they want more NWO. They are the reason fans are watching at home , why they are attending shows etc. They exposed Roddy Piper , Sting and a looong Naaaature Booooy from Syxx. They mock the fossils.

Syxx claims he thought it would be an honor to wrestle Flair but he's washed up and lost a step. Hall mocks Flair as a worn out recording you hear and taunts Flair to come out right now ! That he'll slap him around like nothing as he throws his 2 WCW World tag team belts down to challenge Flair. Out comes J.J Dillion who is happy as Hall claims he knows Flair ain't here. Dillion through audio issues clearly (they have to all share 1 mic huddled together comically) claims that Flair is on a lear jet and should be here tonight as Hall's face tells a story so good.

Syxx wants to face Flair in a rematch but Dillion claims that Hall spoke himself into a verbal contract. Scott tries to back off it and claims that he does what he wants. Dillion claims if he doesn't do the match tonight he will strip the Outsiders of the tag team belts (put em on my desk) . Hall now forced into it claims he will face wrinkled old Flair , so cue up disco music cause he don't want none of this !

Syxx and Hall pose with their belts (Waltman was WCW Cruiserweight champion then) as the show finally opens with WCW Nitro intro. Shiavone welcomes us to Dayton , Ohio ! The audience is HOT and the venue looks sold out. Super blockbuster tonight in Main Event : Scott Hall vs Ric Flair. Out for now is Alex Wright. He is facing Glacier , who is returning after a month and beating he took at Slamboree.

Shiavone promotes that Great Muta/Masa Chono will face the Steiner Brothers tonight. Both Japanese workers are members of the NWO Japan group. After a Glacier pose down , Alex Wright acting heelish jumps him at the bell ! Both men exchange some punches but Wright gets the upper hand with European uppercuts. He just beats down on Glacier in a spot as a heel and does his dancing repeatedly to get heel heat. Glacier with a cool leg sweep in a spot.

Then in a terrible slow botch moment Wright is thrown into corner as Glacier watches him stop in corner and puts his head down for an attempted back drop. Wright again goes to dancing for heel heat and Glacier in a wounded spot nails his chronic kick finisher for the win. Out comes James Vanderberg (Sinister Minister). Who carries the helmet of Glacier's. He distracts Glacier with it as Mortis sneaks from behind as both (Him and Wraith) surround the ring as he tries to fight em off.

In a comical spot Glacier in fighting Wraith does a comical punch and acts like he savagely finished Wraith in Mortal Kombat. Its just a simple punch sold by Glacier to comedy levels. This allows Mortis to jump him. Both start a beat down in corner as Wright demands to get some blows in. They let Wright work over Glacier as he holds him for Mortis kick and he misses nailing Wright ! The beat down goes wonky after this as Glacier delivers a double clothesline to both and kicks Mortis as Wraith gets knocked outta the ring ! We go to commercial finally.

Joe Gomez is out as he gets an intro. Which is mind boggling since Gomez is a jobber. On a split screen Buff Bagwell and Scott Norton mock the Giant. Cause when ur NWO , your NWO 4-LIFE ! Bagwell has taken the name Buff as Shiavone brings up. Bagwell to start tries to get a face thing going comically and soon starts acting heelish. Then we see a pose after a beat down on Gomez in corner.

Gomez fights back on Buff with a sloppy arm drag at one point and then misses a drop kick. Buff tells us he's just 1 man in camera as he misses on Gomez after hitting a drop kick. Then later as Joe delivers punches in a corner Buff slides out and face plants him. This has Gomez roll outta the ring as Buff distracts the referee as Norton slams him back 1st into the ring post. Then we get the Buff Blockbuster off the top rope to finish this match.

WCW Saturday Night was plugged as it was slowly being bumped to later now at 7:05. Shiavone plugs that DDP , Public Enemy and Harlem Heat will be on the show. Then we see Hugh Morrus coming out as suddenly outta nowhere out comes Konnan. Who jumps him from behind. WCW Security quickly come in as Morrus gets up with help from a trainer. But he waves the guy off and wants to wrestle as he sells his head from attack. Tony believes he may have a concussion. Out comes Prince Iuakea , as the Prince seems excited for this.

Shiavone plugs a HUGE star is coming to WCW for June 30th. The match begins as Morrus attacks early , but we see Prince deliver a nice drop kick. Then seconds in gets a roll up pin over the hurt Morrus who is selling the head injury. On the ramp Konnan taunts Hugh Morrus in Mexican. Just as quick we go to the Chairman of WCW , J.J Dillion with Gene Okerlund. They discuss the Flair/Hall match for tonight. Then we go to the WCW tag team situation and the #1 contenders for the WCW World tag team titles. In it he names the Steiner Brothers the #1 contenders. Which has an angry Harlem Heat come out with Sherri.

Sherri mocks how the HH are 5 time WCW World tag team champions and being over looked by peons in the back. She demands the Heat get the title shot but Dillion is unmoved and claims that if the Steiner's win the match tonight they cement themselves as #1 contenders. Sherri warns him every action causes a reaction ! Booker and Stevie sign off ...CAN YOU DIG THAT....SUCKA.

Back from commercial we see the hype for Savage/Page II. Then we get a vignette of Page detailing how he lost his 1st 79 matches. That people said he would always be a loser. But people didn't know his work ethic or how bad he wanted it. We see him working against jobbers training hard. They all never encountered the diamond cutter before. Page leaves off with , tell him how hard work doesn't pay off. At the end DDP leaves off with how he was told he couldn't beat Randy Savage. But we see the clips of the diamond cutter at a PPV . And as he leaves from training he plans to do it again !

Then we see Masa Chono and Great Muta come out representing NWO Japan. Chono and Muta both were Japanese legends at this point. Chono retired in 2014 after a 30 year career and Muta is still working at 57. All 4 men have a stare down at each other to study to start. Scott starts off with Muta as they both take stances as we see them test each other to begin with arm drags. Muta takes some heel advantage with some quick chops and kicks. He is so fast he off the ropes catches Scott with a back chest kick.

His advantage doesn't last long as Scott catches him off the ropes with a double under hook power slam. Then a standard power slam ! Muta is irked outside the ring at this as finally we see a tag to Rick. Then later after some talk outside the ring , Rick Steiner grabs the NWO shirt they wore to the ring and stomps on it. Taunting Chono who tags in to work. In a cool test of power spot between Rick and Masa ; he manages to catch him and back slams him from that !

Later in a cool spot both men are hitting the ropes and Rick catches Chono as he tries a leap frog and in a quick motion power slam ! Then we see Muta come in as Rick catches him and Scott finishes as the crowd goes crazy. Muta outside is so frustrated he pulls up the ring apron and throws it down. Chono back in ring takes heel advantage on Scott as the 2 work him over.

This advantage doesn't last as Scott breaks through an attempted clothesline from both and delivers his own double clothesline . Making the hot tag to Rick as soon all 4 men are in ring. Chono delivers a mafia kick to Scott , as Muta delivers his signature cool hand spring elbow in the corner spot on Rick ! Then we see the heels work on Rick as Muta holds him. Chono decides to spit in Rick's face (which would never happen today for sure) as this fires up Dog face Gremlin. Off ropes Chono misses Rick and delivers a mafia kick to Muta laying him out !

As the Steiners set up for finisher on Muta out comes the Harlem Heat who lay out Rick with a steel chair as Sherri cheers em on. Muta has no clue this happened as he delivers an elbow on Rick who has rolled back in. He then locks on a weird leg submission hold as the referee makes a 3 count ? Post match the HH brag to Dillion they should be #1 contenders right now. Dillion however claims that nothing is set in stone and they will review the tape. Also they best prepare tonight for their tag team match.

Hour #2 arrives as we see Heenan and Shiavone there only. They run down the 1st hour and what happened. We get a replay of the Hall/Dillion spot that kicked off the show. Then we see that Ric Flair has arrived and will speak with Gene Okerlund. Its here that Okerlund brings up how he couldn't help but answer the challenge from Scott Hall and come off some R&R. Flair is all crazy excited , yelling how Nash ain't here tonight. Its just him and Syxx. He plans to stomp a pot hole in his white honky toothpick chewing ass ! Flair is dancing crazy , jumping all around WHOOOO TONIGHT !!
    .

    end of part #1

Shiavone brings up this is a PPV type match tonight with Flair vs Hall. M Wallstreet is out with a WCW crossed out shirt. Wallstreet if we remember couldn't join the NWO as planned due to his contract deal. US Champion Dean Malenko comes out all ready and Ice as usual. Both men start out testing each other with take downs and reversals. Wallstreet gets cocky in a spot and gets rolled up and nearly gets pinned. Then we see referee Nick Patrick and Wallstreet argue.

After working in corner Malenko goes into a chin lock. But Wallstreet uses his size to get the advantage and shove him down. Then later using an arm bar , Wallstreet uses it to throw Dean outta the ring. Then we go back into working some holds and reversals as Malenko uses his back foot to block on and Wallstreet uses ropes to take heel advantage. Heenan being a classic old heel he cheers on Wallstreet who is kicking Malenko on the mat , "Yeah put the boots to him !" Shiavone asks about it as Heenan jokes he just loves watching a guy kick someone when their down.

We see Wallstreet use a chin lock as Malenko tries to rally back. He gets caught and soon puts on an abdominal stretch on Dean. After missing an elbow drop Malenko fires back and catches Wallstreet with a flying knee. Then we see him do a backdrop and later attempts the Texas cloverleaf. But Wallstreet powers out and he gets Dean with a clothesline in a spot.

Out from the back comes Jeff Jarrett as Dean attempts to suplex Wallstreet back into the ring in a later spot. He grabs Dean's leg n trips him as Wallstreet lands on him. As he attempts to grab at his leg a big problem is possibly where Malenko isn't so tall and Jeff has to lean in to try and grab the legs as Patrick makes the count. Its clearly a 3 count as he sees Jarrett there and claims its a 2 count. Malenko has recovered enough and locks on the Texas cloverleaf submission. Its here Patrick stands between Wallstreet and Jarrett outside and blocks him from getting to the ropes it appears.

Forcing Wallstreet to tape out as Heenan claims this is so not right at what he did. The replay however shows that Wallstreet was grabbing at his leg , holding him there making sure he could not move at times. Gene Okerlund is in ring with Jarrett. He is out there mad because it took 2 people to cost him the US Championship win. So he demands a rematch against Malenko for next week. Comparing him to a block of ice with no charisma. Malenko accepts the challenge and tells Jarrett everyone will know Slamboree was no fluke.

Out comes Mongo who is questioning why he came out there right now. As Jarrett claims he has to look out for his own career right now and not be watching him. Mongo makes Debra stand there with him as he decides to taunt Kevin Greene. That he was jumped by him and will make him pay at Great American Bash. We see clips of that clash from last week as we go to commercial.

Back from commercial we see Ciclope and Damien coming to the ring. They are facing the Harlem Heat which is a weird match to see. Its weird to see them working against 2 luchadores. But we see Sherri taunting Ciclope as Stevie starts off . He catches him off the ropes and delivers a sit down power slam. Then after a tag we see Booker T deliver a nice side kick. Finally Booker is caught as both luchadores start double teaming. At one point Damian uses Ciclope as a foot stool to flying clothesline Booker outta the ring. He then hits the ropes and does a suicide dive onto him on the floor !

Then back in the ring Damien tries to throw Booker into the ropes and is caught by Booker with a knee to midsection. Then we see him tag Stevie as both men beat down on Damien. Later we see Booker back in as he throws Damien outside and later into ring railing as he beats down on him. Ciclope tries to help his partner as Stevie Ray brawls with him as the referee gets involved. This has the referee distracted as the Steiner's use this to get revenge. Throwing Booker face 1st into a steel chair Scott has , laying him out !

Stevie can't help as Booker is tossed back in and the luchadores Ciclope and Damien get the win. Shiavone claims speaking of #1 contenders Ciclope and Damien should be it possibly. The 2 men celebrate this as Heenan claims its quite an upset.

After a Lee Marshall "On the Road" segment. In this special Gauntlet match Chris Benoit needs to beat Barbarian to get to face Kevin Sullivan. We see a clip of last week where Benoit is told by Jimmy Hart he has to beat the Barbarian. He wants to go then , but its set for tonights show. Benoit is all intense as we see him and Barbarian lock up. As he comes right at Barbarian and in a wild spot...kicks the big man down in corner !

Chris keeps firing on Barbarian and does a arm hook suplex into a pin attempt. Jimmy Hart gets involved as Benoit chases him and gets caught by Barbarian. Then in a bit of WTF or maybe Barbarian was doing it to punish Chris in a way , he picks him up and suplexes him onto ropes legs 1st which makes Benoit land twisted up. The spot clearly isn't a botch as Barbarian realized he wasn't dropping Benoit midsection 1st like normal. Shiavone claims it could be to blow out his knees possibly.

Barbarian later in a spot delivers a pile driver. After a pin attempt Benoit kicks out. Then later in a spot he hammers Benoit down as the Crippler tries a come back. In that same corner he does an over head toss slam off top turnbuckle ! Later the Barbarian tries this same move but Benoit blocks it and tosses him off . He then delivers a flying head butt , then locks on Crippler crossface as Barbarian tries to hang on and suddenly taps out ! Which stuns some of the crowd and Jimmy Hart. Even after it Barbarian shares a look of shock himself he tapped out as Hart is beside himself as he now has to let Benoit face Sullivan again !

Gene Okerlund post match with Benoit brings up the deal. Chris claims he told Hart he would defeat Barbarian so its time to pay up. Jimmy however decides there is more he has to do to get Sullivan. Now he has to face Meng at Great American Bash. This is step #2. Benoit claims he always knew that Jimmy was a cancer and jackel of Pro wrestling and that no one could trust him. But he will defeat everyone that Jimmy Hart puts in his way. Hart tells him step #3 will come the next Monday.

Now its time for the Main Event as we see Hall with Syxx. The audience is 90% NWO with all black shirts. Flair gets taunted by Scott Hall who throws his toothpick in his face. Flair starts to beat down on Hall with punches and kicks to his knee. Syxx tries to get involved and eats a punch from Flair off the apron. In the corner we see him chop Hall. Then we see the over the turnbuckle spot but this time he dives onto Syxx off the apron and starts choking him down.

This allows Hall to get heel advantage as he goes back into the ring. The audience so impressed by Flair's ass kicking to start starts to cheer him on. Syxx while referee is distracted eats the bronco buster in corner. Later in a spot Hall delivers an overhead slam on Ric. Fans start a Sting chant. Back suplex in a spot from Hall as he tries a pin attempt.

Then we get an abdominal stretch on Flair as Syxx helps his pal with power leverage. The referee finally catches it and Flair does an arm drag take down to Hall. We get a spot of Hall taunting Flair smacking him down . This motivates Flair who chops back ! Then in a cool spot Flair is placed in a sleeper hold , but Ric grabs the leg n drops it to set up the figure 4. Hall quickly delivers a clothesline in a great spot.

Later off the ropes Flair delivers an atomic drop on Hall ! He then turns to Syxx and beats him off apron. Syxx tries to climb top rope as Flair delivers Hall into corner knocking Waltman off the top rope to the floor. Later back in Syxx tries again to use the championship belt as Flair cuts him off. This leads into Hall getting the belt as Randy Anderson (referee) had let this go so long and he DQ's the match when Hall uses the belt on Flair.

Flair is out as the NWO start a beat down on him. Syxx holds him as Hall delivers punches on him. Outside the ring he gets beat on by them til Mongo and Jarrett make the save as Horsemen. Running off Hall & Syxx. Flair won the match by DQ as Shiavone questions just how much he has left.

The NWO music hits as Randy Savage is dragging out Gene Okerlund who doesn't want to do this. But Savage won't take no for an answer and threatens Mean Gene. Savage warns Okerlund he can either do this right or do this wrong. His choice as he is told to get in that ring NOW or he'll drop him like he plans to do DDP at the Bash. Gene claims he's misjudged a lot of people to start this as he did DDP. Who is more than he thought.

Savage proclaims he's the greatest wrestler ; past , present and future. To have lived or ever lived he is ! Okerlund confronts this claim as Savage gets physical it seems til JJ Dillion arrives on the scene. This lets Gene leave as he's had enough of it. Dillion gets after Savage and warns him and others to never touch a WCW announcer. He claims he owes Okerlund an apology . Then he gets after Savage claiming at one time he had huge respect towards him but that has passed given his actions.

Randy taunts Dillion for busting his bubble. Then we see Dillion call out his actions in standing off in crowd and not being a man to get in Page's face the weeks leading their 1st clash. Then he makes Savage snap as he tells the Madness he stands behind Elizabeth ! Randy attacks him as Bischoff and security race to the ring. As Eric is yelling NOOO , NOO as he comically tries to tackle and keep him from J.J Dillion. Security is holding Savage back with Bischoff to calm him.

Eric reasons with Randy as he tells him to think about the money. The crowd starts a DDP chant which drives the Madness crazy again as he attacks on Dillion . Bischoff claims Dillion caused this. That he provoked the Madness. He taunts everyone to SNAP INTO THIS. Ohhh yeaaah. They help Dillion out as fans do a DDP chant to end show as Savage is being held back by Bischoff.

The Good : What made Nitro so successful was its unpredictable nature. What seems weird now is to start off a show with no real TV intro , just some NWO music and 2 guys in ring to hype a big Main Event. Which works so well. You don't know where its going til Dillion makes the Main Event really.

After a dreadful 1st hour of bad matches and at one point a match that lasted less than a minute or 2 (Prince/Morrus) , the Steiner's vs Chono/Muta happened finally to least be something here. Its rare I say this was a good match , it was really too short and the interference deal ruined it to sell a storyline as we saw. But it was nice to see a good match. Then we had Malenko vs Wallstreet (which wasn't great either but ok).

At this point to have another tag team face an international team we had Ciclope and Damien. Which was nice for sure to see than the usual NWO tag team against the WCW team. Also it was nice to see them get a win , even if it was a cheap win. The fact Booker T took a suicide dive from a luchadore in a spot was nice to see.

The DDP vignette was perfect to play into Page's underdog status. Where he had went from a loser low card wrestler to someone who worked his way up over time. That was a good promo and it was good for Savage/Page II as a match.

I'm sure no one expected this (I didn't for sure) but the Flair/Hall match was one of the best matches done in this Main Event. It was really solid as both men looked really good out there. This is a 40+ year old Flair and Scott Hall.

The end angle at promoting Savage/DDP was a great touch. Its weird to see that Hogan wasn't on Nitro or the focus of the show. In fact the big focus seemed to be on the WCW World tag team titles with Outsiders facing Flair/Piper at Great American Bash soon as well as other teams. Also we got a focus on Savage/DDP which ended the show with a nice angle. Where even Eric looks scared of The Madness !

The Bad : The matches to start was anything to write home about. The 1st hour was done to sell a terrible angle no one cared for (Glacier vs Wraith/Mortis) and the other was to sell the new version of Marcus Bagwell. Which is wild to say that Buff actually wasn't helped by Gomez in this at times. Hugh Morris and Prince Ikuaka was done so quick it really didn't help either guy. So yes the near 1st hour was terrible for WCW Monday Nitro standards.

The 2nd hour wasn't much better as the matches seemed more to set storylines in place and nearly all of them ended without clean finishes. People may rip Vince Russo for this practice but this was WCW in its golden era of success and they were doing non-clean finishes for much of the night.

The match no one really wanted to see was Mongo vs Kevin Greene. While Greene was an excited type guy who loved pro wrestling , teams were quick to put contracts in place where he couldn't wrestle even in off season. This match against Great American Bash was possibly his last WCW match.

Sadly we never got a clean finish for Flair/Hall. Both men were doing a hell of a decent Main Event match. Again we got interference and a DQ finish. Its like a running joke at this stage.

OVERALL : ** Outta 5. This Nitro had really no great matches to start . In fact FF through the matches the 1st hour. The only saving grace was Ric Flair who at his age here was able to walk out and get a solid match from Scott Hall. It was amazing to see it before the usual nonsense ruined it. Savage ending the show was a nice wild ending it needed and added to that program.
