WCW Monday Night Nitro Review!

The 2nd hour begins as Mike Teney and Bobby Heenan join us , bragging up that Bischoff is now unemployed. We get a replay of how Bischoff was suspended by Schiller in hour 1.

The 1st match of the 2nd hour is Michael Wallstreet facing Scotty Riggs. Scotty is pretty pumped bragging that the NWO is going down as he comes to the ring with American Males music. This match starts pretty decent as Riggs gets arm dragged , then delivers a nice drop kick to Wallstreet. Nice double ax handle by Scotty Riggs. Then the tide turns as Wallstreet uses the momentum off the ropes to throw Riggs outta the ring. Wallstreet stays in control of the match.

Nice knee to the guy by Wallstreet as he catches him off the ropes. Shiavone claims that Schiller and Turner Sports will grant Roddy Piper to get a team together to face the NWO at Uncensored. It could be a 3 team affair of Luger's team vs Piper's vs NWO. Riggs catches Wallstreet and delivers a nice drop kick off the top rope to Wallstreet. As the match goes the crowd stands as Buff Bagwell attacks Riggs outta nowhere. Then the 2 heels pose as Riggs gets outside the ring. Or Buff poses and smiles. This allows Scotty to pick up a normal chair. Wallstreet takes off as Buff begs off and then escapes.

Lee Marshall is on the road , 1-800 Collect in Panama City , Florida. Next week will be unique as its at a club for Spring Break. Then the bagpipes hit as we see Roddy Piper come down. The Hot Rod seems to bask in the glow of the crowd. Piper claims that Hogan doesn't have 1 problem and that is insomnia since he's faced Hogan twice and both times he's went to sleep. Piper claims that he has 2 families , one is on a mountain in Portland , Oregon. The other is the fans who raised him for years. Roddy describes that the words he was saying last week meant , the war is not over til you go home.

Piper claims his 3rd family will be his team. And he will face each one of them tonight. Allowing the fans to select who gets in with a thumbs up or down. Piper finally claims his I.C.O.N shirt means "I Cower Over Nothing !" He removes his jacket as he seems ready to compete. He's gonna face 6 guys and comically jokes , "6 guys , I gotta be an idiot."

So he tells em to come on down. One man comes down as Shiavone has no clue who it is (and in searching I have no idea) . Decent built guy in jeans as the guy goes for Piper's leg. This allows Piper to take him to the mat and paint brush him. He then locks in an arm hold as the poor guy taps. The fans give this stranger a thumbs down. As he accepts it and shakes Piper's hand.

The 2nd guy is Luther Reigns. Or the guy who would become Luther Reigns. He slaps Piper and then delivers some knee lifts to him. As Shiavone claims this guy seems to be impressive. He literally is putting it on Piper , til he slides outta a body slam and hooks a sleeper. This guy seemed to actually get thumbs up , but they vote him down. Number #3 is coming to the ring when he's laid out by some guy with boxing gloves who looks like Eugene in a sense. No lie , it could be Eugene's dad. He wants a boxing match and tosses some gloves to Piper who obliges.

The guy comes right at Piper slugging him down with gloves. The guy gets back up after Roddy takes him down. He then knocks Piper to the mat as they both exchange more punches. The guy then takes Piper down by his legs as Roddy keeps trying to knock the guy down with punches. Finally ending this a few seconds and they go at it again after a break boxing , as the guy gets him in the corner. Finally Roddy delivers a nice punch as the guy keeps coming and finally he stops it.

Boxing guy Eugene gets the thumbs up and props by Roddy Piper. They decide to do some more boxing as Roddy seems to like this. This is a straight wrestling , brawling match as they go again and he takes Roddy down again. Finally Piper stops it and says he likes the guy , slapping him on the back. He's on the team it appears.

Next is the 300+ pound version of Doctor Death Steve Williams. Which makes me wonder why not have Williams show up. This guy is barefoot and wants to shake his hand. This guy is a kick boxer it appears and uses his legs against Piper. This guy takes Piper down with a choke and he keeps kicking and punching. Roddy comes back with kicks and punches. Then the martial artist barefoot guy sits Piper on the top rope and kicks him repeatedly. But the big guy is gassed , tired clearly. They slug and kick each other as Piper seconds later delivers a low blow. To take the guy down.

The big guy clearly doesn't know how to wrestle much as he attempts a body slam on Piper , then somehow gives him a wedgie folks. Piper tapes his arm , he's done as this guy earned a spot on his team. The final guy coming is big John Tenta. Roddy looks at the fans like , ooh boy. Then he fakes a hand shake and thumbs him in the eye. Going at it , as Tenta looks ready to finish this . The other 2 guys attack Tenta as Piper laughs so hard. Piper makes em stop and selects his team. He cuts a promo that these guys are his FAMILY. He slaps em all across the face and tells Hogan ...ITS WAR.

A former boxer , martial artist and sumo as Shiavone claims. This segment folks was the longest it appears and ran a near 20 minutes. No lie.

In ring is Mr. J.L and Rey Mysterio Jr. The current TV Champion is Prince Iaukea who claims he plans to face both Regal and Rey Mysterio Jr as TV Champion soon on the split screen. Finally in ring we see Mysterio deliver a spring board side splash onto J.L. Seconds later as J.L is in control he tries a side roll up pin attempt. Then we see seconds later that J.L tries a flying head butt like dive off the top rope. Missing it as Mysterio moves.

Outside the ring Mysterio slides out and then eats a nice drop kick as he tries to get in. J.L does a running somersault to the floor on Mysterio. Seconds later the tide turns again as Rey delivers a top rope frankensteiner in a spot. J.L rebounds and catches Rey with a nice atomic drop. Then as the match rolls , Mysterio avoids J.L as he signals its time for a West Coast Pop , his head scissor roll up pin . Winning a short decent match. Mysterio claims he's going after the TV Title now.

End of Part #2

Gene Okerlund is with Madusa who is the #1 ranked person to face the WCW Women's title. Madusa cuts a promo claiming she junked a Women's title to come there and has gotten nowhere. That Bischoff is to blame and he is a waste of space. That he is too interested in himself. Well Madusa brings up that Luna Vachon is claiming she's the #1 contender for the Women's title. Outta the back comes Vachon who attacks Madusa and we....cut away to commercial as the beat down starts ? WTF ?

Out come the NWO with everyone and the real Sting way behind. The fans in the Omni toss garbage into the ring as usual. Bischoff is with them (wasn't he suspended) and taunts Schiller , who can't fire him. Hogan brings up that Bischoff can't be fired or be talked down to since he's close to Ted Turner. They are in business negotiations with Turner over NWO. Hogan claims a man can step outside their league like Harvey Schiller.

Hogan brings up the selection of folks he's bringing as a team to Uncensored. Savage claims that Bischoff has protection and that Piper needs professional help. Then claims that Piper can't match him on Icon vs Icon level. Hogan claims his team has it all...The Madness , Hollywood , the Outsiders...and the Stinger. Sting meanwhile stays silent and watches this. Nash comes over to speak about Uncensored...and claims the NWO is just 2 sweet ! Hogan is asked to give em the guns and pose down. Nash and Hall act to dance in ring as this happens.

The WCW Uncensored PPV ad airs with Hugh Morrus. The Steiner's are out and its the 1st match since the back injury Scott received due to the car accident. Lex Luger and Giant are out and they are listed as the WCW World tag team champions. But then Shiavone claims they were stripped of the tag titles. The match starts with Rick Steiner and Lex Luger testing each other and the temper flares as Rick slugs Lex and this fires up the Total Package. He delivers a big clothesline.

Seconds later Rick catches Lex in a leap frog and delivers an overhead suplex. Making the tag to Scott Steiner. Who delivers a nice underhook suplex. Luger finally makes the hot tag in a spot as Giant is in. Eating a big boot and elbow drop. Both Steiners deliver a double vertical suplex on Giant in a spot. All 4 are ready to go as the referee tries to calm things , face to face. Then the NWO arrive through the crowd. This makes all 4 men stop to face the NWO. The Steiners , Luger & Giant gesture for em to come on.

Then we have Piper's team arrive who want the NWO to come to the riung. The fans start a loud WE WANT STING chant. The stand off ends as WCW's teams wait on the NWO. Then it begins ! All of them go at it as Sting watches on. The show ends...

The Bad - Ohh boy was this one bad. After last weeks solid Nitro , this one had a train wreck quality. The biggest problem was WCW gave little build or reason for Piper to have strange jobbers come to the ring and be on his team. Also the segment ran so long (near 20 minutes folks) that it ended potential solid matches like Guerrero/Dragon and J.L./Mysterio. Instead we got one of the most silly dumb segments involving Roddy Piper in some time.

Also this showed you how much WCW cared for a women's division , Madusa comes out and right when her program begins ...they cut away from that. To a commercial. Its silly.

Plus how could Bischoff gets suspended by Harvey Schiller and suddenly appear at the end segment ? It makes getting suspended look like nothing really.

OVERALL : ** Outta 5. Beyond some nice spots in matches , the show ended up a mess and pretty silly. With Piper's team of strangers and then Bischoff's suspension/non-suspension. Just a forgettable Nitro folks.

WCW Monday Night Nitro - March 10th , 1997

Your Hosts - Tony Shiavone , Larry Zbyszko , Mike Teney & Bobby Heenan

This Nitro opens with Hulk Hogan and Dennis Rodman looking at his movie poster. Rodman & Jean-Claude Van Damme starred in a box office bomb called "Double Team". The film also starred Mickey Rourke as well. Hollywood claims him and Rodman will be as bad as they wanna be on Nitro. This Nitro as Shiavone claims is a special Spring Break Nitro in Panama City , Florida.

The club that WCW at is pretty cool and the water around the ring is nice addition as well. Up pulls a white limo and its Roddy Piper with his team. Who he now has wearing kilts to match him. Up next is High Voltage in the opening match. Shiavone claims that the press has talked about Rodman being in WCW the whole week. That he's now joined the NWO.

Jeff Jarrett & Steve McMichael will be facing High Voltage , Mongo claims they will pull the plug tonight on High Voltage. The male fans start a Debra chant , really not caring for any of the men in the match. Kaos starts 1st and seems in control til Mongo clotheslines him down and then does 2 football spears as Shiavone creams himself over this. Jarrett is in as they do a nice double team , where Jarrett step over toe trips him and Mongo leg drops him. Jarrett starts doing the in ring work as fans pop for Jarrett when he struts.

Rage catches Jarrett in the corner and both young guys play the heels in this as a Mongo chant starts. High Voltage start doing some nice double teams with Kaos doing a catapult into the ring. Kaos delivers a nice suplex as fans chant for Flair. Then Jarrett rallies back with a nice atomic drop , and clears the ring in style. Then tagging Mongo in to deliver a neck breaker. Mongo plays to the crowd as Larry tells him to not get distracted and he finally delivers a tombstone pile driver to finish it. Decent short match as WCW keeps trying to make Mongo something.

Overhead a helicopter flies over head. Tell me that isn't wild...a friggen helicopter is filming spring break overhead for WCW. In ring Gene Okerlund is in ring as he calls out Roddy Piper and his group. The 3 of them have rope as a belt for the kilts. Which is beyond silly. Piper makes some jokes about Spring Break and that for him as a young man , spring break meant a spring broke in his bed with him and his wife. Since he has 6 kids. UNCENSORED folks. Then he mocks Howard Stern for making fun of him for his giving 2 new guys a chance and proclaims Stern is hung like a pimple.

Piper tells Dennis Rodman that he can't touch him come the PPV. Then he turns his ire to the WWF (who had mocked Piper in promos awhile back) as he claims that the WWF claims that they don't have no 1 hip wrestlers working in their company on PPV's. Piper says they are right , because they don't have anyone hip working PPV's since they wanna watch WCW. Then he brings up Goldust , he beat Goldust last year...and he had 1 hip then ! Roddy is tired of critics. He claims he will never desert his family and the critics can put a diaper on. Then Flair's music hits as the 4 Horsemen arrive.

Anderson tells Piper that he applauds the men who have stood behind Piper and that they took a beating from him , so he respects that. But this is a job for professionals. AA offers the Horsemen before to him , and he brings up how the NWO has ran over the Horsemen. Dropping him and Flair. That maybe Piper is the rallying point that the 4 Horsemen need. Piper goes to reject it as Flair speaks up as fans pop huge.

Flair puts over his friendship with Hot Rod. That they are friends til the end , but he needs to listen to this. Hollywood has been put 2 sleep twice by him , but Hogan will stack the deck as usual. Flair claims he wants to come back and return , that he wants to team with Roddy at Uncensored. This appeal from Flair and friendship has Piper proclaim he will gladly team with Flair , Mongo and Jarrett at Uncensored. The Family will watch their backs at the PPV.

The next match after the commercial is Prince Iaukea and he's defending the TV Title against Squire Dave Taylor. Before the match Taylor cuts a promo saying that he plans to teach the Prince a wrestling lesson of his life , for beating his good friend Steven Regal for that championship. Taylor thumbs him in the eye to start as they hit the ropes and Iaukea catapults him using his feet. Suddenly up pulls the NWO with Hogan proclaiming Spring Break in a limo is great. The NWO is for 4 Life. As they start to walk in , outta nowhere someone has laid out Michael Wallstreet.

This is the 2nd time its happened as Big Bubba was laid out weeks ago mysteriously. Back in ring Taylor uses European uppercuts on the Prince. Both men seconds later reverse pins and Squire goes for a body slam , and the Prince somehow , makes him fall backwards and rolls him up for the win ? Just...bizarre as a finish.

Jim Powers is out with Teddy Long as Dean Malenko is on commentary. Malenko claims he's out to give insight to the true Eddie Guerrero. That people have questioned why Eddie's been the way he's been for weeks. Its jealousy of him basically. This match starts as Eddie and Jim start off testing each other win arm bars and reversals. Malenko puts over that since they have both came into the company one has rose to the top , the other hasn't. One will go down as one of the greatest in the industry , the other won't. As he puts Eddie down.

Powers is in control for awhile using his power moves. He then catches Eddie off the ropes and tries to throw him into the air , as Eddie catches him with a drop kick. Powers gets back in control as he delivers some nice power slam , then follows seconds later with a big suplex. Eddie rallies back and delivers a running side knee. Eddie goes for a pin as his feet are under the ropes as the referee starts to count as Teddy Long jumps up. Guerrero is questioning this as Powers charges towards him . Eddie moves and he collides with Long off the apron.

Guerrero rolls up Powers for the win as Malenko proclaims this is Eddie Guerrero. He will do anything to win a match. In ring Okerlund interviews Guerrero. Gene questions if its them or Eddie that changed. Eddie claims he's not the guy going around claiming "He's the new improved person." Or beating people up and changed attitude. Then he claims he's sick of folks claiming he's changed. His family , his friends , even Okerlund now believe he's changed ! At Uncensored he will show Malenko he's still the same Eddie Guerrero.

Craig Pittman comes out without Teddy Long. Pittman is facing Diamond Dallas Page in this singles match as the fans pop. They start a DDP chant for him before the match begins. Pittman starts off trying to show up Dallas with his physical strength , then Page repays the favor. DDP starts off with an arm bar into a side headlock in a nice move. In a nice move seconds later , Page catches Pittman off the ropes and braces his arm and does a high standing leg drop to him.

Later outside Pittman catches Page and starts to work on rest holds and finally delivers a sloppy clothesline. His pace is slow as Page grabs him and tries a roll up pin. Pittman then catches Page off the ropes seconds later and delivers a sloppy belly to belly slam. Page rallies back and delivers a discus punch as fans pop. Pittman reverses Page into the corner as he charges. Page gets his leg up , as he's woozy , DDP delivers the diamond cutter finisher for the win.

Okerlund gets in ring and puts over that fans tonight and last week have started to get behind him. DDP puts over that fans know he's real. Suddenly the lights at the club go out power wise. Audio is cut off since its a live club venue and its one of those ...instances where this happens at times when your live. The helicopter flies over head as Shiavone promotes a WCW Saturday Night show with Jericho , Jarrett and Ric Flair will be there !

They then redo the promo as Okerlund brings up Savage. DDP pledges to make Randy Savage remember his name. That its DIAMOND...DALLAS....PAGE ...BANG ! Coming to the ring is a new luchadore for WCW ...Galaxy. Who actually is Damian 666. He plays both characters in the company actually. Galaxy will be facing Rey Mysterio Jr tonight. Mysterio on a split screen cuts a promo says that he will get Prince at the PPV. That he's always been a man who defies the odds. That no one said he'd be able to make it against big guys. Yet here he is...where Big Boys Play.

End of Part #1

In ring the match moves quick as Mysterio does his usual high flying greatness. Great high risk drop kick and flip over on Galaxy. Then he manages to drop kick Galaxy off the apron in a spot , nearly letting the guy land in the water outside the ring. In a spot Galaxy walks the top rope with Rey's hand , but he forces him down , landing on the rope. Seconds later Galaxy looks to get the advantage and misses a body splash off the top rope. Rey sets up and delivers the West Coast pop for the finish roll up pin. Post match Mysterio tells the Prince he's coming for the TV Title.

The helicopter shows the Club La Vela overhead and its a nice cool location for this. Fireworks go off as we see Teney & Heenan with Shiavone. They run down hour 1's highlights and bring up Dennis Rodman joining the NWO. They then go to Okerlund in ring as he brings out a MTV VJ John Sencio. Who was a MTV VJ for 4 years in the mid 1990's. He is more known for hosting the HGTV show "Cash in the Attic" in the 2000's.

He's hosting this Spring Break swimsuit contest. This is Miss Monday Nitro Pamela Rogers. A beautiful blond in a red bikini. The fans whistle like crazy and pop for Pamela Rogers. The most insane story actually involves her. 8 years after this , Pamela Rogers had a sexual relationship with a teenage boy. She was charged and served awhile and kept getting in trouble for trying to contact the boy involved. She also had to surrender her teacher's license and register as a sex offender. The final part is in 2015 she was charged with sneaking phones into where she once served her sentence.

Sencio promotes a show that Hall & Nash will be on for MTV. Then Okerlund has to pose with Rogers. And she's pretty good looking folks from this. The music hits as the Amazing French Canadians come out with Greg Valentine and Road Block. This is an 8 man tag match as we see that Luger , Giant and the Steiner Brothers are gonna face them. Lex will start the match against Valentine as the Hammer starts off with a kick to the guy and then after an irish whip off the ropes , eats a body slam from Luger.

In ring next is Rick Steiner who delivers a clothesline to Valentine. He runs around barking and quickly gets his head gear turned by Carl Ouellet in the corner. This cheap heel tactic works as Valentine takes advantage. Then the heels starting work over Rick. Making him eat a double suplex by the Amazing French Canadians. Road Block tags in and delivers a body slam and screws up as he tries a body splash off the top rope. Scott tags in soon after on fire.

Scott delivers an epic overhead suplex to the much larger Road Block. Showing that his kayfabe back is 100%. He tags in the Giant who makes the sign this is over. He delivers the choke slam to Road Block , as the faces stop the heels from stopping the winning pin fall. Team WCW wins the match as Heenan puts over how well the team worked together tonight.

Gene Okerlund gets in ring to talk to all 4 men. He puts over the Team NWO , Team Horsemen/Piper and Team WCW in ring now. If team WCW wins , all the belts are up for grabs. If Team Piper wins , he gets Hollywood Hogan in a steel cage. If Team NWO wins they get to be on any WCW Broadcast. WHAT ? Aren't they already doing this now ? That makes no friggen sense as a stipulation.

Luger says its right and that Panama City is the happening place to be tonight. Lex puts over that the Horsemen have always been a band of cut throats so Roddy shouldn't trust em. But he knows the Steiners and the Giant. And they are gonna bring it home. Giant puts over that Team WCW can't be stopped with the masters of the suplex next to him , the Total Package as well. And him...a fire breathing Giant ! In ring Rick does a weird promo as Scotty jokes with Gene his brother ain't never been right , but he's right about taking down NWO. Okerlund claims victory over NWO at Uncensored would be so , so sweet.

After the commercial out comes Juventud Guerrera who will be facing Ultimo Dragon in what should be a good match. Shiavone promotes shows ahead and the action begins quick as usual. So many flips and reversals from both guys as they bounce off ropes. Dragon tries a flying double ax handle into the corner and misses. Guerrera delivers a nice flip to him. Soon outside the ring in a spot Sonny Oono delivers some kicks to Juventud and this gives Ultimo Dragon an opening. But Juvie plants him back 1st into the guard rail.

Soon back in ring later Dragon does his series of kicks , ending with a back thrust kick. In a great spot Dragon catches Juventud in a torture rack type bent around his head move , then he sit down in a type of back breaker slam. He moves and puts Guerrera into a nice surfboard submission in a spot. Juvie won't tap as Dragon gets tired of that. Then delivers a nice slingshot suplex into a pin attempt.

Dragon tries a German suplex as Juvie flips out. He knocks Dragon outta the ring and delivers a nice 360 splash over the top rope to the floor in a cool spot. Juvie tries a victory type roll up pin , and gets a 2 count. Dragon believes he lost as he gestures it was a 3 as the match continues. Dragon soon later catches Juvie in the corner and delivers a running Liger Bomb (power bomb). Ultimo delivers a smooth dragon suplex into a pin bridge for the win. Both Oono and Dragon speak Japanese into the monitor and then pose for a selfie together from Sonny's camera. Pretty solid match.

Chris Jericho is out to face Scotty Riggs. Who sadly still comes out to American Males and dresses the same. Jericho and Riggs go through a nice testing out phase as Riggs delivers a nice shoulder block. Jericho later to break a chin lock sits down to take a brief advantage . Later in a spot Chris delivers a nice belly to belly slam , catching Scotty off the ropes. Drop kicking him outta the ring. He stays on Riggs and suplexes him back in.

This lasts awhile til Jericho comes outta the corner as Scotty catches him in a power slam. Then delivers some nice drop kicks as he celebrates. Heenan claims this is where Riggs is too young and should go for the kill. Jericho catches him on the top rope. Then in a miss botched spot we see Jericho try something as Riggs comes off with a shoulder block move. Both men continue til outta the back comes Buff Bagwell with a leather belt. He starts whipping Riggs with it as he doesn't seem to care about Jericho. This lets Chris get to his feet as he snatches the belt away as they trade punches , til Jericho side kicks him down. Scotty gets the belt as Buff gets outta dodge quick !

Down at the entrance ramp is Madusa with Gene Okerlund. They are gonna discuss what happened last week with Luna Vachon. Madusa is sick n tired of women coming into WCW claiming they can kick her butt and are #1 contender. She was here 5 years ago and was the 1st lady of WCW. Which is true. She makes a challenge to Luna Vachon and says if she's such a bad woman , why isn't she here tonight ?

Lee Marshall on 1-800 collect is in Savannah , GA to hype that show. Then promotes a Nitro Party in Charleston. After this Kevin Sullivan comes out with Jacqueline. He's facing Hardbody Harrison , who comically also had an interesting post WCW career. In 2001 he sued WCW with Sonny Oono and others for racial discrimination and got a sizable pay out. Then in 2007 Harrison was arrested for holding women in his house and forcing them into prostitution. Harrison is serving a life sentence.

Sullivan jumps Harrison quick , throwing him into the corner. Punching and kicking the poor guy. Then throws him to the floor where Jacqueline beats him up and body slams him on the floor. Back in ring Harrison does his only offensive move , a sunset flip into a pin attempt. Sullivan drives him into the mat outside in a throw attempt. Sullivan takes him outside and crotches the poor guy on the step railing. Then he takes Harrison outside as the match ends in a double count out. He takes a wooden sign and smashes Harrison across the head.

Harrison is then thrown down the steps , brought back up and thrown around by Sullivan in this . Jacqueline beats Harrison down as well. Kevin takes him and throws him into the water as Kevin decides to leave him. Shiavone claims the safest place for Harrison is the water. In ring as Okerlund interviews Hart as he claims that Jacqueline is armed and dangerous. Showing off her arms. She claims that she's the REAL DEAL and can beat any man. Sullivan puts over that Roddy Piper is the smartest man he's ever met , but he's going into battle unprepared.

Sullivan claims that his old friend the 4 Horsemen have contacted him. That without the head at the top being Flair , they have floundered. He wants Roddy to focus on the task at hand. Not to worry about Mongo & Jarrett , not to worry about Arn and not to worry bout him and Benoit. No excuses...

The NWO come to ring as Hogan leads the group out. Everyone follows in order as Sting is the last one out. Bischoff is there and remember folks ...he was suspended supposedly and not to be on TV. I guess that didn't take. Bischoff claims "Is this a party or what ?" Then Eric discusses Dennis Rodman and if he's the newest member of the NWO or not. Hollywood answers that he's still feeling the after burners of last night in NY city. So they go to footage of Hulk giving Rodman a NWO shirt. Claiming he's earned the colors.

Rodman makes the NWO sign and claims NWO is the new team of the future. Back in ring Hogan proclaims Rodman as the most censored man in the world right now. Bischoff wants Sting to have the colors and they been forgetting to. Hogan draps the NWO shirt over a non caring Sting it seems. Nash gets on the mic and is clearly ..hammered. He says something about the Steiners picking up a loss damage waiver. Scott Hall manages to cut a promo and keeps his glasses on to not show his eyes. Saying the Giant wants his autograph , to not sing it...BRING IT.

Randy Savage is asked about Page as they act to taunt him. By not remembering his name. Everyone acts to not care about his name. Savage jokes he's a little bit afraid to not care about the situation. Hollywood claims that the NWO is the tits right now. Bischoff claims they will see ya at Uncensored. Shiavone even questions , isn't he suspended and how is he able to get on TV ?

After a Uncensored PPV promo , Gene Okerlund interviews the Public Enemy as Grunge mocks the Horsemen. Calling them a bunch of show ponies. That Flair acts like he's having an epileptic fit every time he comes out. Grunge acts like Flair , shaking himself n all. Then he mocks Mongo claiming the guy is so dumb he believes he's playing football still. Grunge mocks Jarrett for wanting to be a Horsemen his whole life and will never be one at all. Rocco gets on the mic and drops some freestyle promo til outta the back comes the Harlem Heat who jumps them.

The Heat and PE start to fight as Okerlund gets outta there and suddenly Shiavone claims this was supposed to be the main event but due to time issues , the show is ending right here.

The Bad - This Nitro had time and weird issues. As mentioned in one spot , the lights and power suddenly went down. WCW scrambled to commercial and came back , having Page redo the promo against Savage. Then the finale had the Public Enemy come out for a couple minutes , cut a promo and start something with Harlem Heat ...to suddenly end it. It was bizarre. But this is what happens when your a live product at times.

OVERALL : *** Outta 5. While a better overall show than last weeks run of terrible matches and WTF idea with Piper getting a team of folks no one wanted to see , this weeks show still had issues. A number of promos went too long and Okerlund interviewing almost everyone after a match , it slowed the program down. Plus add in issues where power went down , the show had some weird botches. The funniest though is this show will be remembered for having Pamela Rogers and Hardbody Harrison in 2 spots. Both were later convicted of some wild crap.

The 1st match of the 2nd hour is Michael Wallstreet facing Scotty Riggs. Scotty is pretty pumped bragging that the NWO is going down as he comes to the ring with American Males music. This match starts pretty decent as Riggs gets arm dragged , then delivers a nice drop kick to Wallstreet. Nice double ax handle by Scotty Riggs. Then the tide turns as Wallstreet uses the momentum off the ropes to throw Riggs outta the ring. Wallstreet stays in control of the match.

Nice knee to the guy by Wallstreet as he catches him off the ropes. Shiavone claims that Schiller and Turner Sports will grant Roddy Piper to get a team together to face the NWO at Uncensored. It could be a 3 team affair of Luger's team vs Piper's vs NWO. Riggs catches Wallstreet and delivers a nice drop kick off the top rope to Wallstreet. As the match goes the crowd stands as Buff Bagwell attacks Riggs outta nowhere. Then the 2 heels pose as Riggs gets outside the ring. Or Buff poses and smiles. This allows Scotty to pick up a normal chair. Wallstreet takes off as Buff begs off and then escapes.

Lee Marshall is on the road , 1-800 Collect in Panama City , Florida. Next week will be unique as its at a club for Spring Break. Then the bagpipes hit as we see Roddy Piper come down. The Hot Rod seems to bask in the glow of the crowd. Piper claims that Hogan doesn't have 1 problem and that is insomnia since he's faced Hogan twice and both times he's went to sleep. Piper claims that he has 2 families , one is on a mountain in Portland , Oregon. The other is the fans who raised him for years. Roddy describes that the words he was saying last week meant , the war is not over til you go home.

Piper claims his 3rd family will be his team. And he will face each one of them tonight. Allowing the fans to select who gets in with a thumbs up or down. Piper finally claims his I.C.O.N shirt means "I Cower Over Nothing !" He removes his jacket as he seems ready to compete. He's gonna face 6 guys and comically jokes , "6 guys , I gotta be an idiot."

So he tells em to come on down. One man comes down as Shiavone has no clue who it is (and in searching I have no idea) . Decent built guy in jeans as the guy goes for Piper's leg. This allows Piper to take him to the mat and paint brush him. He then locks in an arm hold as the poor guy taps. The fans give this stranger a thumbs down. As he accepts it and shakes Piper's hand.

The 2nd guy is Luther Reigns. Or the guy who would become Luther Reigns. He slaps Piper and then delivers some knee lifts to him. As Shiavone claims this guy seems to be impressive. He literally is putting it on Piper , til he slides outta a body slam and hooks a sleeper. This guy seemed to actually get thumbs up , but they vote him down. Number #3 is coming to the ring when he's laid out by some guy with boxing gloves who looks like Eugene in a sense. No lie , it could be Eugene's dad. He wants a boxing match and tosses some gloves to Piper who obliges.

The guy comes right at Piper slugging him down with gloves. The guy gets back up after Roddy takes him down. He then knocks Piper to the mat as they both exchange more punches. The guy then takes Piper down by his legs as Roddy keeps trying to knock the guy down with punches. Finally ending this a few seconds and they go at it again after a break boxing , as the guy gets him in the corner. Finally Roddy delivers a nice punch as the guy keeps coming and finally he stops it.

Boxing guy Eugene gets the thumbs up and props by Roddy Piper. They decide to do some more boxing as Roddy seems to like this. This is a straight wrestling , brawling match as they go again and he takes Roddy down again. Finally Piper stops it and says he likes the guy , slapping him on the back. He's on the team it appears.

Next is the 300+ pound version of Doctor Death Steve Williams. Which makes me wonder why not have Williams show up. This guy is barefoot and wants to shake his hand. This guy is a kick boxer it appears and uses his legs against Piper. This guy takes Piper down with a choke and he keeps kicking and punching. Roddy comes back with kicks and punches. Then the martial artist barefoot guy sits Piper on the top rope and kicks him repeatedly. But the big guy is gassed , tired clearly. They slug and kick each other as Piper seconds later delivers a low blow. To take the guy down.

The big guy clearly doesn't know how to wrestle much as he attempts a body slam on Piper , then somehow gives him a wedgie folks. Piper tapes his arm , he's done as this guy earned a spot on his team. The final guy coming is big John Tenta. Roddy looks at the fans like , ooh boy. Then he fakes a hand shake and thumbs him in the eye. Going at it , as Tenta looks ready to finish this . The other 2 guys attack Tenta as Piper laughs so hard. Piper makes em stop and selects his team. He cuts a promo that these guys are his FAMILY. He slaps em all across the face and tells Hogan ...ITS WAR.

A former boxer , martial artist and sumo as Shiavone claims. This segment folks was the longest it appears and ran a near 20 minutes. No lie.

In ring is Mr. J.L and Rey Mysterio Jr. The current TV Champion is Prince Iaukea who claims he plans to face both Regal and Rey Mysterio Jr as TV Champion soon on the split screen. Finally in ring we see Mysterio deliver a spring board side splash onto J.L. Seconds later as J.L is in control he tries a side roll up pin attempt. Then we see seconds later that J.L tries a flying head butt like dive off the top rope. Missing it as Mysterio moves.

Outside the ring Mysterio slides out and then eats a nice drop kick as he tries to get in. J.L does a running somersault to the floor on Mysterio. Seconds later the tide turns again as Rey delivers a top rope frankensteiner in a spot. J.L rebounds and catches Rey with a nice atomic drop. Then as the match rolls , Mysterio avoids J.L as he signals its time for a West Coast Pop , his head scissor roll up pin . Winning a short decent match. Mysterio claims he's going after the TV Title now.

I remember of how much I loved that segment with Piper and the guys testing him. In many ways it was like the originator of the UFC but where the guys stays in their expertise, it's not hybrid/mix.

And couldn't understand why after all this, Piper didn't pick them for his team, he went for regular WCW wrestlers after that. This was a case of bookers deciding oh this do not work, pull the plug on something that has potential.

Likely they realized that beyond John Tenta , do you really wanna headline a PPV with Hollywood Hogan/Kevin Nash/Scott Hall/Randy Savage vs Lex Luger/Giant/Steiners vs Roddy Piper and 2 new guys no one had no clue who they were and John Tenta ? They realized Piper's team needed the folks behind it to build up.

WCW Monday Night Nitro - March 17th , 1997

Your Hosts - Tony Shiavone , Larry Zbyszko , Mike Teney & Bobby Heenan

The show opens with a replay of the final of the WCW Uncensored PPV. We see Rodman spray paint the NWO letters on a fallen Lex Luger. Now the stipulation has changed yet again as the NWO can vie for any title they want on WCW TV. Which is a change they can do whatever they want on WCW programming (they were already doing that anyhow).

Tony Shiavone welcomes us to Monday Nitro as the fire works go off as Shiavone claims the NWO can go for any title they want at any event. Out 1st to start Nitro is Psychosis vs Rey Mysterio Jr. Who didn't win the TV Title at Uncensored. Mysterio starts off with some mat wrestling as he gets Psychosis to the mat. The back up as Rey goes for a back slide into a pin attempt. Backstage we see WCW Live on WCW.Com . Which is pretty cool to see.

Back in both men go through a test of strength into some reversals and Rey delivers a pin point drop kick outta that. Msysterio seconds later bounces off the ropes with Psychosis and catches him , elevating him into the air with his legs. Then once outta the ring Mysterio comes off the apron and delivers a great head scissor take down on the floor ! Psychosis catches Rey back in ring and rams him with a running thrust into the corner ! Then he charges and misses flying into the ring post and out to the floor. Rey catches him with a suicide dive through the ropes seconds later.

Now back in ring again Rey makes the sign for the West coast pop. But Psychosis doesn't do the roll up well and slams right on his head in the spot. He is hurt for sure as he lays there n rubs the back of his head in that botch pin cradle.

Gene Okerlund decides to interview a quiet Arn Anderson who looks sad. Okerlund brings up that he brings up that AA is injured and he knows what is wrong with him. Anderson brings up that one good thing is last night Sting came home to WCW. Now he discusses that he needs neck fusion surgery and he's put it off as long as he could. But he needs to do it. Anderson brings up his Grandma who died a decade ago , that she held on a long time with cancer , then told him ...i see your a responsible adult and head of the family now , I can go in peace. She went to sleep and never woke up.

The Horsemen is his extended family , that he sees that the Horsemen can work and be fine without him. AA brings up Kevin Sullivan and he said it hurt him personally to see Sullivan's son Ben tell him last night he was dead to him. That no father ever wants to say that to a son or have them say it to him. So he kinda apologizes in a way for the personal grief he's suffered since he kicked him a year ago in Baltimore. AA pledges to return after his neck surgery.

After a commercial Shiavone brings up the Randy Savage/Dallas Page program , where Savage doesn't know him at all. This leads into Uncensored last night where Savage attacked Kimberly and spray painted her. Discussing her Playboy pictures. Then we see where Savage attacked Page as Kimberly had to cover him to save him. Miss Elizabeth spray painted NWO on her again.

From the Duneon of Doom up next is Maxx (Max Muscle) who used to be Page's bodyguard a few years earlier. An angry Page starts off quick with punches. But Maxx has the size and catches him with a clothesline. A couple elbow drops follow. Both men start exchanging punches as Page comes out ahead on that. Page climbs the top rope and does an awkward body splash which Shiavone sells as being great. Then we get

Max works him into a full nelson seconds later , but Page breaks free with a chin buster . He then delivers the diamond cutter finisher for the win. The match ends as Page looks angry doing his symbol. Gene Okerlund joins Page at the ramp as he brings up what happened. Okerlund claims Elizabeth is a huge disappointment to him. Page calls her Bimbo Liz and claims he will make Savage snap into the real world. Saying that Randy was born to be a chalk line. That he was born to be a dead man walking. Then we hear Savage on a mic.

In the crowd is Savage and Elizabeth . Randy taunts Page by claiming he needs to take the base outta his voice when talking about Macho Man Randy Savage. He's a superstar , an icon. He's a nobody of course. Savage asks Liz if he should grant a match as finally this pisses off Page who charges and climbs over a railing to go through the fans. Randy and Liz take off quick.

Up next is another Dungeon of Doom match as its a tag match with Hugh Morrus and Konan. They are facing Joe Gomez & Renegade in this one folks. Out comes the supposed suspended Eric Bischoff who suddenly stops things for no reason. Coming over to the announce booth is Bischoff with the Outsiders. Shiavone wants to leave as Larry tells him to stay. Bischoff finally tells him to relax. The Outsiders aren't there to do anything and will be competing tonight. As proud WCW World tag team champions they will defend the belts tonight. They know the Harlem Heat is there , the Steiners are there as are the Public Enemy.

He asks them both if they are up for it as Nash goes oooh yeah. Hall is asked as he jokes he is always ready. Shiavone tries to excuse how Bischoff is back allowed on TV using last nights stipulation. Which makes no sense. In the ring , Gomez misses a body splash in the corner as Morrus and Konan start working him over. Focusing on his leg as they make tags and keep on it. Konan back in as both announcers put over how good the Dungeon works as a tag team out there.

Morrus delivers a big clothesline as Morrus yells for Hall & Nash. Konan back in ring does a half crab type submission as he focuses on Gomez's leg some more. The Dungeon in ring starts using heel tactics to keep the beat down on Gomez. Finally seconds later Morrus misses a big elbow drop as he makes the hot tag to Renegade who starts working both guys over and delivers a big body slam and clothesline to both. Then he screws up and tags in his injured partner Gomez who can barely get back in ring.

This allows Renegade to be knocked outta the ring as Gomez eats the rolling clothesline from Konan , and then the no laughing matter moonsault from Hugh Morrus. To end this short tag match. A 1st perhaps where a tag partner doesn't realize how hurt his partner is. Pretty funny.

After the commercial we get to see the new United States champion , Dean Malenko. He won the title last night and now will face Scotty Riggs in his 1st title defense. We get pics from last nights strap match between Riggs & Bagwell. Buff Bagwell won the match by going to all 4 corners and throwing his butt into the final corner. We get pics of Malenko/Guerrero. Syxx tried to get involved and helps Malenko win with the video camera.

Riggs and Malenko start off quick as he delivers a drop kick to the ice man off the ropes. Seconds later Dean catches Riggs with a swinging neck breaker !. Taking advantage as he later drops him chest 1st across the security railing outside the ring. Back in ring Malenko works over Riggs as both men then go through some reverses as Riggs nearly gets a 2 count in a roll up.

Riggs catches Malenko with a drop kick and seconds later gets caught with a flap jack across the top rope. Malenko then catches Riggs in a roll up pin for the win. Post match Malenko tells Syxx he wants his Cruiserweight title back.

After the commercial we see Lex Luger & Giant come out. As WCW bills them as the WCW World tag team champions (except they don't have the belts). They are facing the jobber team of Tarantula and Knuckles Nelson. Tarantula looks like he could be Bray Wyatt's father with his long hair, beard and look. Anyhow he starts off with Giant as Tarantula is backed into the corner and quickly smashed and then gets smashed into the other corner.

Nelson gets tagged in as he doesn't wanna be there. Giant quickly takes down Nelson with a kick and head butt. He then gets hip tossed with the help of his hair outta the corner. Seconds later the Giant kicks him in the corner with big boots. Choking him with his leg in the corner. Finally Tarantula gets in as it becomes a short lived handicap match. Both eat a double clothesline from Giant. Who choke slams Nelson and then choke slams Tarantula.Fans want Luger as he comes in and soon power slams the guy. Nelson is pinned as Luger doesn't have to do anything , but he racks Tarantula for the hell of it.

On the ramp Gene Okerlund interviews Giant & Luger. Gene claims he was happy to see that Sting came home finally at Uncensored. Giant claims the light at the end of the tunnel is there now. That after carrying WCW's banner for months , having a talent like Stiiiiiiiing (he yells it crazy) is home. Luger claims that this made him believe in Santa Claus , Easter Bunny and more when Sting dropped from the ceiling. That his faith in humanity was restored. He's proud of everyone and even when they lost last night , Sting uplifted the whole organization.

Pictures show Sting laying out the Outsiders with a ball bat. Then pointing at Hogan as Rodman has to try and keep him happy. Last night we see Mortis vs Glacier on Uncensored. Both men are shown in what is considered a decent match. Then we see James Vanderberg's new protege named Wraith arrive. Coming to the ring is Ultimo Dragon with Sonny Oono. Dragon will be facing Bobby Eaton.

This should be an interesting clash of styles here. Eaton manages to get Dragon to slide out a bit confused at how to work against him. In the corner Eaton catches him with some punches , then as he hits the ropes , Dragon eats a clothesline. Seconds later Eaton takes a leg scissors from the top rope and gets beaten. The finish seemed so rushed and they play it that Eaton hit his head coming down. Still a bit rushed.

Here comes the NWO as we realize why the match was so short. Out comes Hollywood Hogan leading everyone as they seem all smiles. But as Shiavone claims , they will do some lying for sure and he wonders how they will handle the Sting situation. Bischoff proclaims it was another BIG WIN for the NWO. Hollywood claims that now everyone has bowed to the NWO , it was so written and so achieved.

Hogan proclaims the NWO will now rule for all eternity. Savage claims that to answer Page's challenge , the NWO makes dreams happen. Like they did Kimberly's. Nash & Hall want to give the Einsteiner's a title shot. At Spring Stampede , they will face em. The contracts are signed and ready. A fan throws a drink and it splashes Hall's oiled hair (never moving it) and Bischoff jokes about how his hair stayed perfect as Hall acts to style it as they go to commercial.

Hour #2 begins as Heenan & Teney join Shiavone. The fans pop massive for Bobby Heenan with Weasel chants. They bring up how the NWO won at Uncensored and get to do whatever title matches they want. Then we see a replay of Page/Savage from earlier tonight.

Coming to the ring is Alex Wright and Mark Starr in a tag team match the 4 Horsemen (Jarrett & Mongo). We see that Jeff Jarrett is happy as he struts out with all 4 fingers. Last night pics are shown of the Texas Tornado tag match where it was insane. Public Enemy vs Harlem Heat The Horsemen helped the Harlem Heat win and they were originally involved in it til things changed. In ring the Horsemen start off in control as Wright's neck is drapped over the bottom rope. Mongo does a nice leg drop and side slam.

Wright moves as Jarrett misses a back elbow in the corner. Starr tags in and starts off pretty hot with a clothesline and nails Mongo in the corner. Which is a mistake as he comes in with a 3 point stance tackle. Then clips Starr , setting him up for a figure-4 finisher. Public Enemy arrives for pay back as they nail Jarrett down the aisle with a trash can and then its a pure brawl as Debra even gets involved in a brawl. All 4 men brawl down the aisle to where the announce booth is Michaels and Jarrett end up making them retreat.

Okerlund announces that Public Enemy and Horsemen will clash at the next WCW PPV (Spring Stampede). Debra brags up her genius of Jarrett working again in the Horsemen. That she has beauty , brains and plenty of money. Jarrett claims since he came in 6 months ago , Flair was right. He can walk the walk , talk the talk. Mongo rips both Public Enemy and gets after the crowd for booing Debra. Its the final part where Debra delivers her gossip line where she claims that Johnny Grunge's girlfriend is best , drawing flies.

Scott Norton comes down to the ring and will face Chavo Guerrero Jr in a match. Guerrero tries a lock up and gets tossed back into the corner. Then gets slammed hard as quickly escapes and makes Norton chase him around the ring. He catches him in the ropes in a flying body splash. Then tries to fly over the top and is caught. He gets guerrilla pressed inside the ring for that.

Back in ring Chavo tries a new tactic and drop kicks his knee. He keeps trying for it and eats a back hand chop from Norton. Chavo off the ropes nails the knee again , then drop kicks Norton as the big guy still won't fall. This time he falls into the corner as Chavo goes at it. Norton reverses an irish whip and makes Guerrero bounce off the corner. Seconds later he delivers a big power bomb as he folds up Chavo with it for the win. Norton claims he's a heavyweight , you can't expect a little man like that to handle him.

Shiavone brings up Hogan & Rodman. Then we go backstage as we see Hollywood proclaim him the "Real Hot Rod". They mock Sting as being amazed at the hand shake they did. Rodman claims that when the NWO comes to town folks will be stunned.

The Outsiders arrive as Syxx brings them out. Nash , Hall and Syxx all share a big hug coming to the ring. Hall gets on the mic and does a little NWO PSA . Hall claims they are the guys who say it , n do it. Nash & Hall sing the Bad Boys song together. They then say , send em out. And then we see Bunkhouse Buck & Mike Enos who will face them. It stuns me Buck still has a job in WCW at this stage.

Hall starts off trying to taunt Buck and then goes into an arm bar to work him over. Buck tries to rally back but Hall cuts it off quick. He tries to tag Enos in and won't tag in to help.Nash is in now as he gets worked over. Nash finally throws Buck into the corner and demands Enos tag in as he climbs in slowly. Hall comes in next and gets caught trying a flying body press , into a fall away slam. Enos throws him into the corner as Buck catches Hall with a leg kick , using cheating methods that stuns Hall & everyone. Seconds later Hall is caught with a big power slam and nearly gets a 3 count.

Enos then locks on a sleeper to try and put Hall on the mat. But fans rally behind Hall , who delivers a chin buster. Buck gets tagged in as Hall makes the hot tag as poor Buck tries to back away. Nash catches him and then takes down Enos. Finally Enos tries to come in and stop the power bomb finisher , but Hall cuts him off. Then we see Hall decide to do the Outsider's edge on Enos. Pinning him finally. Post match Hall mocks the Einsteiners in the camera.

Backstage we see Piper discuss the Horsemen , who weren't there to wrestle. And Shiavone claims the idea Flair would return at Uncensored wouldn't happen since Flair's out another month with a shoulder injury. Coming to the ring is Chris Benoit who goes right at Billy Kidman as fans pop. He delivers a back suplex and then chops Kidman down after he bounces off the ropes. Then seconds later catches him off the ropes and elevates him into the air. The match ends as quick as it started once Benoit locks in the crippler crossface.

Gene Okerlund gets in ring post match. Out comes Ric Flair to join the two in ring. Benoit brings up AA's surgery coming up and that its a mountain he has to cross and he has in the past. He then brings up Sullivan and how he's taken everything from him. That even his own son has left him. He has conquered Kevin Sullivan and as a man he's done it. Flair gets on the mic and is pretty happy then brings up Piper calling his name last night. Flair claims he was in Savannah with all the girls partying. That he gave Roddy all the power to carry the Horsemen last night.

Flair claims Piper dropped the ball last night. Then Flair brings up how Roddy wanted to go home 3 weeks ago and how he wishes he could go home. Flair claims oh hell no , there is no going home for him ! That when AA goes under the knife , you think he's gonna say , take care of Erin and the babies. Hell no , he's gonna say , pass me a Miller Lite ! He says Roddy has 2 choices in life , he can go home to the babies or he can be a Horsemen....dance all night , dance a little longer !

After the commercial Michael Buffer is in ring as he announces the WCW Monday Nitro main event. Its Harlem Heat vs Steiners. The Heat are decked out in gold as Shiavone brings up. Stevie Ray catches Scott with some kicks to the ribs to start the match , but the power of Scott comes in , as he catches Stevie off the ropes with a big guerrilla press slam. The tag to Rick as he delivers a couple big lariat clotheslines.

Eventually the Heat take advantage of Rick in ring and start to work him over. Stevie delivers a nice big power slam on Rick off the ropes. In ring Booker T delivers a nice side suplex. Finally the hot tag to Scott happens as he catches Booker in a belly to belly overhead suplex in a spot. Now all 4 in as this match breaks down. Then out comes the NWO to end this match in a DQ. Taking out Harlem Heat and the Steiners.

The fans start a loud WE WANT STING chant as the NWO works over both tag teams.Then from the back comes Luger & Giant. They clear the ring of the NWO as they stand together. Finally from the rafters repelling down is Sting ! He stands with the others and gets on a turnbuckle , pointing at Hollywood Hogan as Hogan goes crazy.

The Bad - Too many quick finishes has became a thing. The Eaton/Dragon match was a pure case of , we have to end this quick so we can have Hogan cut a promo in ring. It became less about good matches and more about , lets cut promos as we saw. Which isn't bad when you have a good balance. But the NWO didn't need more mic time for damn sure. Since the whole program was essentially NWO vs WCW.

Another key problem was WCW was booking and advertising situations like Flair's return which was supposed to be at Uncensored. But its said Flair learned he was gonna take another big loss to Hogan in that (for no real reason) and he told them hell no. So they postponed his in ring return til later. Just they never informed anyone of this til the night of the show.

OVERALL : *** Outta 5. While not a good Nitro for in ring action , the show furthered some storylines. The Outsiders/Steiners program , the Page/Savage storyline and finally Hogan vs Sting. Which was now becoming the big grand plan for the company.

WCW Monday Night Nitro - March 24th , 1997

Your Hosts - Tony Shiavone , Larry Zbyszko , Mike Teney & Bobby Heenan

We open with a clip from last week where we see Savage taunt Page about giving him a match. As he climbs through the crowd to get to him. Shiavone welcomes us to Duluth , MN where in the crowd is the legend himself Larry "The Ax" Henning. Who gives a nice gesture and nod to the camera. Larry discusses Henning's past tag teams as the music for Konan hits as he comes down to start the match. He's facing the US Champion , the Iceman himself. Dean Malenko looks pure business as he comes to the ring.

Above Malenko's eye is a bandage where he likely got hurt at a house show. The 2 men start off with Konan works him around into an arm bar take down to the mat. Malenko works through it and soon after some boots to the back starts on him. Then locks on a ankle lock submission. Konan however reverses out of it quick enough. Seconds later they work through some reversals and flips off the ropes as Konan's is pretty much timed off , and he rolls up beside Dean and delivers a knee to the gut.

Syxx soon joins us on the split screen . He mocks Eddie for screwing up things so much , that he's too much. Then laughs about how he messed up that leaves everyone wondering , what the hell is he talking about ? In ring Konan does his roll up clothesline spot. Then delivers a nice power bomb to Malenko. Seconds later after they bounce off the ropes , Dean delivers a nice running knee to the face type drop kick. Seconds later Konan back in charge tries a high risk move off the top rope. Malenko however catches him off the top rope and locks in the Texas Cloverleaf submission for the win ! Post match he taunts Eddie by pointing at the US title.

Gene Okerlund waits for him at the top of the ramp as some audio issues happen as Gene discusses Benoit but it can't be made out. He brings up Eddie Guerrero and Syxx. Malenko claims there is no coincidence that wherever there is a Guerrero , there is a Syxx. But he's not worried about Eddie. No , he's concentrating on Chris Benoit ahead. He claims there is a lot of respect both men have for each other. That when he looks at Benoit , he sees himself. That they both wanna be the top guy. Well come try and take the US Championship and move up if he can. Okerlund promotes the US title match at Spring Stampede.

Shiavone promotes the Uncensored win by the NWO and how they basically got more of the same really deal on WCW TV. They used this win to have Randy Savage challenge Prince Iaukea for the TV title. Then we go see a replay of clips from Mortis vs Glacier. How suddenly a giant man arrived in a mask , where him and Mortis double teamed Glacier post match. Mortis music hits as he makes his WCW debut with James Vanderberg. He taunts the end of Glacier's career.

Mortis will be facing Jerry Flynn in this singles match up. Mortis look with the skull mask and hair is very Kane like. He opens and tries a spinning back kick and misses. But they start off as Flynn catches him with an arm drag off the ropes. Then a spinning back kick to take Mortis off his feet. Mortis soon takes advantage and does a back kick as he backs up in the style of AJ Styles pele kick. In the corner Mortis beats him down and then turns his back to gesture n taunt fans. Flynn catches him for that and seconds later delivers a nice spinning heel kick off the ropes.

Flynn makes the mistake of charging into the corner and eats a Mortis chronic kick. Mortis works him over and does a nice standing side kick as he catches Jerry off the ropes. Then grabs Flynn by the throat and takes him to the corner in the Undertaker's type of walk the ropes deal and drops a standing leg drop type move ! The fans pop as Mortis plays to them. This gets a 2 count as Vangerberg ain't happy. Finally Mortis remembers he's a heel and gets the referee distracted as his manager chokes Flynn. Seconds later Mortis does a move where he drives Flynn's face into the mat between his legs and does a slow roll over to play around and gets a 2 count again.

Finally we see Mortis try and climb the ropes and waste too much time as Flynn catches him and delivers a big power bomb. He can't make the pin too fast and Mortis kicks out. He regains himself and picks up Flynn over his shoulders. Then climbs and drops back in a Samoan drop type move off the 2nd rope. Calling it the flatliner. Fans actually pop for Mortis , who is a mute in a mask. But his look and all made fans care.

Coming to the ring after a commercial is La Parka who is dressed pretty outlandish in a Sombaro and jacket. He is facing Juventud Guerrera in singles action. Shiavone brings up how he didn't see Scott Hall with Kevin Nash , but with 7 inches of snow outside and it coming down , he can understand why. Guerrera and La Parka start off shoving each other as Parka and him start quick , nice tilt the world reversal out by Guerrera and then he eats a side jumping kick from him !

La Parka catches him and then struts crazy in a spot. Soon outside the ring Juventud goes flying outside the ring over the top rope into the camera in a body splash on La Parka ! Back in ring La Parka catches Juvie with a running lariat. He does a flip splash off the 1st rope and misses Guerrera but makes the pin attempt as Shiavone points out. Seconds later off the ropes , he catches Guerrera in a torture rack like move. Back outside again , this time La Parka does his suicide dive through the ropes into the camera on Guerrera !

Both men slowly get back in ring from this. Then both slowly fight to suplex each other , with Guerrera trying to suplex him outta the ring. This fails and Juventud then delivers a spring board 360 onto him. In a spot he tries a leg scissors off the top turnbuckle on La Parka , instead , its reversed into a big power bomb by him ! Then we see La Parka deliver a spinning body block onto Guerrera and gets the win ! Just a fun filled match of high risk spots.

Shiavone shows NWO Souled Out and how Randy Anderson had to come in and make the 3 count when Nick Patrick was knocked outta the ring during the Steiner Brothers match against the Outsiders. Bischoff is shown the next night firing Randy Anderson and taking the belts from them. Weeks later we see Harvey Schuler suspending Bischoff from WCW TV (which he wasn't). Then we get the automobile accident where Hall , Nash & Syxx may have been responsible for them wrecking. Then actions at Uncensored where they laid out Rick Steiner backstage. Finally the challenge from the Outsiders at Spring Stampede.

Okerlund is with the Steiners discussing the history of this and the challenge ahead. Scott Steiner tells the Outsiders at Spring Stampede they can't pull anymore tricks and that Bischoff is suspended (he is ?) . Rick Steiner brings up how he's ready and that they may have put him down and out before , but the dog face is ready as he barks to a pop. After commercial Shiavone promotes WCW Saturday Night.

End of Part #1

High Voltage is up next in tag team action (likely to lose as usual) as Rage & Kaos are excited. Out comes the Public Enemy with a taped up gimmicked table. The fans in attendance do the waive that Grunge & Rock do. High Voltage takes advantage early , jumping the PE. But it don't last long as both Koas and Rage are thrown into each other. Koas is clotheslined over the top rope. Finally making this an actual tag team match for the short time. Rage hits Rocco from behind off the ropes allowing his partner to get the heel advantage as fans rally behind Rock.

Koas in a spot does a tilt the world slam on Rock , showing off his power and gets a 2 count. Rage in slams him and misses a back somersault splash , missing. This allows the hot tag to Grunge who takes down both High Voltage guys. With clotheslines and slams. Rage is thrown out as we see the PE double team Kaos. The fans chant for a table as the PE play to it ! They lay Rage across it and Rocco uses Johnny's back to elevate himself over and splash Rage through the table as fans pop. Meanwhile in the ring , Jeff Jarrett walks down and smashes Grunge with the loaded briefcase.

He puts Kaos over Grunge as the High Voltage get a win ! Which even stuns Shiavone. On the entrance ramp Mongo isn't happy with them cheating and how he was set up. That he feels he's gonna be set up for a long walk off a short pier ? WTF ? Anyhow this sets up Spring Stampede as the Horsemen will face Public Enemy.

After commercial Okerlund discusses the 4 corner match where Lex Luger , Giant , Stevie Ray and Booker T will compete. The winner of this match will get Hollywood Hogan at a later date in a WCW World title match. Paul Wright is in such good shape , he wears a cut Nitro shirt at this point. Giant puts over he may have to face Lex , and he puts over what a good friend Luger is. That when he needed a good friend , someone who had his back ...it was Lex Luger. Okerlund brings up how Hollywood may do a divide n conquer tactic with them.

Luger brings up that was the case back then. But as time passes , weeks pass , months ...the balance of power is shifting. And come Spring Stampede its either gonna be the torture rack or the choke slam , take your pick Hollywood Hogan ! After this interview we get Super Calo's music as he comes down to the ring. Psychosis comes out to face him as on a split screen we see Sonny Oono discuss Rey Mysterio Jr. And mocks how Mysterio's mom called him Jr , because she had to bend down to speak to him. Since he's such a small guy. That he's also stunted mentally as well since he's facing Ultimo Dragon on Spring Stampede.

Psychosis starts off with a nice high swing kick on Calo. Then later we see Calo deliver some nice kicks. He comes off the top rope and changes it from a body splash into an arm drag take down. In a botch seconds later , Calo slides over Psychosis in a weird spot through the ropes to the floor. Back in ring later , Psychosis crotches Calo on the top rope . Then climbs the top rope and comes off with a jumping spin wheel kick !

Seconds later Calo is caught off the ropes , in a torture rack like spin but reverses it into a crucifix pin attempt. Later in a spot outside the ring Calo comes off the apron and delivers a forward huricanrana onto Psychosis. The move shakes up Psychosis as his head rolls off the concrete floor. He then body slams Psychosis and comes off the apron with a somersault splash onto him !

Back in ring seconds later , Calo comes off and is caught with a spinning heel kick to the mid-section. Psychosis delivers the big leg drop high off the top turnbuckle for the win . Decent short match.

Hour #2 begins as streamers go off and fire works are set off. Shiavone brings up all the sell outs with Nitro in the weeks ahead. Bobby Heenan gets a huge epic weasel chant from fans. Shiavone & Teney discuss the TV title match between Prince Iaukea & Randy Savage for later. Then we get replays of what happened earlier with Horsemen helping High Voltage win against Public Enemy in an upset.

Hugh Morrus comes out with Jimmy Hart to face Chris Benoit in this singles match. Benoit is alone tonight without Woman. She is with Arn Anderson with his surgery according to Shiavone. The match starts quick as Benoit goes at Hugh Morrus. After catching Benoit off the ropes he guerrilla press slams him. Then we see Morrus stay on him as Horsemen chants begin. Seconds later Chris catches Morrus leg and leg whips him quick .

Seconds later we see Benoit catch Morrus with a powerful release German suplex. Then we see Konan shove Benoit off the top rope and it allows Morrus to deliver seconds later , the no laughing matter moonsault for the win. Post match in ring ; Sullivan , Morrus and Konan lead a beat down on Benoit. Then shockingly out from the back comes Dean Malenko who tries to save Benoit ! But the numbers game is too much as they focus on them as fans chant for the Horsemen. Then from the back to a huge epic pop is Ric Flair.

Flair comes down and clears the ring with punches and low blows. He helps Benoit to his feet as Chris and Dean share a look. Ric steps in and tells him that Malenko had came in to help. They share a look as we see Flair seemingly thank Malenko for trying to help. After a Hollywood Hogan NWO shirt promo , we see the Faces of Fear (Meng & Barbarian) coming to the ring against Harlem Heat.

Barbarian and Booker T begin the match as we see the Barbarian's power as he catches Booker off the ropes as he tries a cross body. He gets slammed into the corner turnbuckle face 1st for that. Then later Barbarian sets him up on the top turnbuckle as he tries a back suplex. Its blocked as he comes off with a cross body . The two Harlem Heat start working over Barbarian in the middle of the ring. The fans start a chant of LETS GO GOLDBERG ? (No clue what they mean here)

Meng is tagged in and delivers a nice back suplex on Stevie Ray in a spot. The Faces of Fear pound on the corner on Stevie Ray. Finally the Heat cheat to a pop as we see Booker deliver a high back kick off the ropes and it sets up Barbarian for Stevie's big chronic kick. Booker then misses in a spot later where he tries a big swing kick and ends up crotched on the ropes. Then eats a clothesline from Meng. Both deliver double head butts off the top turnbuckle and can only get a 2 count.

Booker off the ropes kicks Meng and tries a body slam , then collapses with his weight. They keep focusing on Booker's back area. In a nice spot , Barbarian does a nice side walk slam with Booker. The fans start a Harlem Heat chant , which shocks even Shiavone. Meng locks on an abdominal stretch submission for a few seconds. Still keeping Booker away from making the hot tag. Booker rallies back and makes the tag finally as we see Stevie and Booker do a double team splash off the top rope. Then seconds later we see a nice Harlem side kick on Meng from Booker. Stevie stops a pin attempt after a power bomb from Meng , as the match soon breaks down.

This leaves Meng & Booker in ring as we see Sherri get up on the corner as Meng charges to nail Booker there. He moves as Sherri bounces to the floor , out of it. This allows Booker to roll him up using the tights to get the pin. Post match we see them check on Sherri on the floor. She gets up as they help her to the back.

Gene Okerlund gets set to interview Benoit & Flair at the top of the ramp. Benoit begins the promo discussing how Sullivan continues to show that big yellow streak he has , by his actions tonight. He also claims Sullivan and company attacked Anderson at his motel after Nitro where he revealed his injury. He questions Malenko on him being out there tonight as he doesn't normally get involved in matches like this. He has respect for Malenko , so he better not lose that. Flair gets on the mic and details that AA and Benoit claimed that Hot Rod couldn't hang with em.

He also comically claims that now they go to bed 1 night a week , 20 years ago...they didn't go to bed at all ! WHOOO !! Flair brings up that Piper is the Icon , that him and Piper need to show the youngsters what being legends are about. So he wants Piper to come out next week and claim he's Horsemen and not wanna go on about going home to his wife and babies. Some of them have more wives , some more kids. But they got 1 thing they all stand for ...its WCW. Then Flair struts and dances around as usual.

Coming to the ring is Malia Hosaka. Hosaka is still working today and has been wrestling for 30 years. She was trained by Killer Kowalski. Hosaka will face Madusa in this singles match as WCW remembered they had women wrestlers signed. Madusa starts off shoving Malia as she gets drop kicked for that. Then we see Madusa deliver a nice snap mare , but is drop kicked again. The fans start a USA chant ...a very loud one as Hosaka locks in a Boston crab submission hold.

Madusa rolls through it as both try roll up pins from it. Back in Malia locks in a rest hold , but Madusa breaks through and does some hair whips to the ground on her. Then she rolls over and slaps Hosaka in the face. Back up off the ropes Hosaka tries a crucifix roll up , but Madusa botches and doesn't fall back , so Malia lands and rolls her up in an awkward side roll up pin attempt. Hosaka works on her back with kicks. Then outta nowhere Madusa reverses out and delivers a bridged back suplex into a pin !

Lee Marshall is from Roanoke , VA and brings up how the show is a sell out. But they redone more seats to sell more tickets at the venue. WCW is the hottest ticket folks and he don't want anyone to miss it.

Renegade comes to the ring pretty excited as we hear Hacksaw Jim Duggen's music. He comes out to a huge pop from fans as he carries old glory . He grabs a NWO sign and smashes it with his 2x4 . The match begins as the 2 go through some reversals as Duggen yells for USA as the fans cheer him on , he then takes him down with a big arm bar. In the ropes Hacksaw turns loose showing respect to the young Renegade , but is jumped from behind in a sloppy take down. Back around the ring as Renegade focuses on him with arm smashes and all , its no effect as Duggen pumps up for America.

He then starts to deliver big hard punches as Shiavone brings up Renegade's heel tactics changing him perhaps. In the corner Hacksaw slugs him down 8 times , then locks on a front face lock. Renegade manages to break free after seconds with a face scratch. Renegade locks in a rest hold as USA chants begins again. Hacksaw back up gets thrown into the corner as he's dazed. Renegade shows off his talent with a Muta type hand spring elbow into the corner ! But as the referee gets Renegade from slugging him in the corner , Hacksaw grabs a roll of tape from his tights.

As he comes back he clocks Renegade for the win . Shiavone brings up that Hacksaw had 2 rolls of tape as the referee got one. Hacksaw claims he could take Hogan. Shiavone takes us to a video package of Sting coming to WCW's rescue. Him pointing the bat at Hollywood Hogan. Then after that we get a promo of Spring Stampede with the 4 horsemen on horses in the old west. With Flair uniting them at the end.

Coming to the ring is the Amazing French Canadians with Robert Parker. Who is still dressed like he joined the French foreign legion. They are facing the Steiner Brothers in tag team action. Carl Ouellet & Jacques Rogeau start to sing the Canadian national anthem and finally its cut as the match begins. Ouellet starts off with Scott , but is caught in a massive tiger power bomb ! Rick Steiner comes in to save his brother and delivers a double Steiner line.

Outside the ring later we see Ouellet throw Scott into the ringside railing. Both him and Rogeau start working over Scott in a nice double team set of moves. A nice double team flap jack in the corner. They keep Scott in the corner and work him over. Then Ouellet gets too cocky and comes off the top turnbuckle and eats a big boot. Rick Steiner is finally tagged in as he delivers clotheslines and all. Now all 4 get in ring to brawl as Parker outside nails Scott , then outside the ring he tries to nail him with the Canadian flag. He misses and eats a punch for that.

Meanwhile in ring the AFC deliver their finisher but Scott has the referee distracted as he holds the flag. This allows Rick and Ouellet to get back up. We see him being held as Rogeau tries using his boot to nail him. Instead Jacques lays out his own partner and it helps the Steiner brothers win.

The NWO come to the ring now as we see Randy Savage with Syxx & Elizabeth. Soon the rest of the NWO arrive with them as Nash is there. Who loudly yells into the camera , "Right back atcha HBK !" Flashing the NWO sign for his buddy. Nick Patrick is with them as Bischoff has a Dennis Rodman shirt. Prince Iaukea has to step into the ring for this match as he comes out ready. Nash acts like this will be fair as he tells the referee they will step out as they slowly all leave Savage to face the Prince one on one.

Savage and the Prince test each other out to start the young man gets the older veteran down with a shoulder block. He gets irked and ducks outside the ring. Iaukea is caught with a kick by Savage and thrown into the ropes. He delivers a quick kick and then flying cross body into a pin attempt. Prince tries a body slam and another pin attempt. He works over Savage as he then gets too cocky and tries a flying cross body off the top rope , and eats the canvas. Savage then takes control.

Then the Macho Man climbs up and delivers his elbow from the sky finisher. He has him beat and pulls him up at the 2 count to inflict more punishment. Through the crowd comes Page. He charges everyone in the NWO and gets swarmed. Savage and Page go at it in ring as they all have to keep him from Macho Man. Nash delivers a lariat clothesline to take Page down. Then they help Nash deliver a big jackknife power bomb. Savage delivers the elbow from the sky .

Nash delivers a big jackknife power bomb to the Prince. We see Bischoff do his karate poses as they hold up Page. He delivers a back leg round kick to his head as the NWO celebrates. They take the paint can and paint NWO on the Prince and then he paints on Page's back . He puts a big 0 on DDP's back. To mock him.

The Bad - One key problem was how WCW seemed to book its newer stars compared to its older ones. If the idea was to build Malenko , Benoit and Prince Iaukea as future stars of the company , they sure as hell wasn't the way to do it. Because it was like they either would get beat down or need the help of an older star to save them. In Benoit & Malenko's case , both young stars were taking a beat down and needed Flair to save them. The Prince and DDP was destroyed and fans wanted Sting to save them.

Speaking of Prince Iaukea , he had some obvious gifts and had talent. In fact his early push mirrored the push that Rocky Maivia was getting from the WWF at this same period. 2 young guys , given a shocking win over an established veteran for a championship run. Unlike Rocky however , the Prince wasn't getting booed outta arena's. He just wasn't getting great title matches on Nitro to demonstrate his talent and who he was really. Tonight's main event showed it , as it lasted less than 3-4 minutes. What the Prince needed was good longer matches to showcase him .

OVERALL : **** Outta 5. Beyond a very weak ending , this Nitro featured what it really was built on. A solid opening hour with lucha matches and build in the mid-card. Its when the show lacked a great main event that killed it. Vince McMahon has had issues with his 205 show and Cruisers . He needs to watch a WCW Nitro and see how WCW effectively booked Cruisers with them just having great fast paced action and spots. To thrill folks.

WCW Monday Night Nitro - March 31st , 1997

Shiavone opens with a repeat of last weeks short Main event where Randy Savage faced Prince Iaukea . Where the match broke down and the beat down on DDP happened. Page is here tonight and we are WCW Monday Nitro live ! Nitro is at the Roanoke Civic Center and its sold out.

Outside the arena up pulls the NWO in a limo as Savage , Nash , Norton and a couple others are there. Missing is Scott Hall and Hollywood Hogan. The announcers question what the deal is happening with Hogan & Hall ? Why haven't they been seen the last couple weeks. Coming down to the ring is Lex Luger & Giant as Rick Fuller & Road Block. The Giant starts the match out and throws Fuller back with ease into the turnbuckle. Where he gets smashed with a big clothesline and then makes the tag into Luger. As he works an arm bar , Fuller gets a free shot in on him.

The tide quickly turns as Luger ducks a clothesline as he bounces off the corner and catches the big Fuller with a back suplex. Seconds later as Road Block is tagged in , the big man body splashes him in the corner. Then after bouncing off the ropes later , he does his flying loaded forearm spot to Road Block. The rally however is short lived as Road Block is back on the offense again. He catches Lex with a knee to the gut and later drops a nice leg drop.

Fuller back in works over Luger in the corner with chops and kicks. Then back in comes Road Block who body slams and then misses an elbow off the top rope in a spot. A wobbly Luger is double ax smashed in the back , driving him into the corner to tag in the Giant. The Giant delivers a big boot to the face on Road Block and then as they both try and double team him seconds later , he catches them with a double clothesline !

The fans pop massive for Giant as he signals the choke slam . Lex gets in and racks Fuller as the Giant choke slams Road Block for the win. Suddenly from the back comes the Harlem Heat in street clothes as they knock Luger outta the ring and try to double team the Giant ! Then we see Luger rebound as all 4 men start brawling as we go to commercial as Larry wants to stay for this.

After commercial the Heat talk with Gene Okerlund . Booker T brings up how they are former 7 time WCW World tag team champions and never get any respect. That they will show em come Spring Stampede. What some , come get some. Stevie Ray gets on the mic and echoes his brothers words and that they will show Giant and Luger that . Stevie brings up that Lex's been a thorn in their side since he returned to big time wrestling. The Giant is a big tall drink of water , he'll take care of personally. Sherri brings up that both men stuck their nose in something they shouldn't have. They will divide and conquer.

Mike Teney joins them for this match which will feature Japanese female wrestler Meiko Satomura who folks at the time of this match is 17 years old. She is still competing today , 20 years later. In this match she will be facing Toshie Uematsu . Who finally retired in 2012 after a 17 year career. This match is for the WCW Women's Cruiserweight championship tournament they are doing (outta nowhere) . This match starts out as Satomura works over Uematsu with some arm bars and kicks to it. She charges and playfully does her arms like a kid playing as she splashes her in the corner.

Shiavone points out Meiko seems to like playing to the crowd. She delivers a nice scoop slam and climbs the top rope. Then she tries a frog splash and eats 2 knees to the gut as she waited too long . Toshie runs and attempts a walk up her and back flip as she screws up the spot. Then she repeats the spot and does it. Seconds later she catches Satomura on the top turnbuckle with an open hand palm slap. Then delivers an arm drag take down where Satomura lands pretty hard. Uematsu climbs up and delivers a nice angel type body splash onto her for the pin fall.

Post match Shiavone claims Uenatsu will advice on in this tournament. We get a replay of that angel flying splash .After the commercial we go from ladies from Japan to Lucadores from Mexico. Psychosis comes down to the ring as he speaks some Mexican to the crowd. Coming out to face him is Villano IV. Psychosis starts off with an arm bar as we see Villano work out and reverse from that to taking over with his own arm bar.

Psychosis spins out and gets locked in a side head lock. Teney brings up to date on the history of the Villano name and why the 4 brothers use it to honor their fathers movie role he had. Psychosis after a leap frog delivers a nice running lariat ! Then after delivering a swinging heel kick from behind (and knocking him off the top rope to the floor) Psychosis follows and climbs the top rope. Delivering a wild corkscrew moonsault off the top turnbuckle to the floor ! Just an epic damn spot.

Psychosis back in ring seconds later is caught right off the top turnbuckle and eats a DDT from Villano IV. This gets a close 2 count . Then we hear something is happening backstage as we see backstage where Nash , Syxx , Norton and Wallstreet discuss things. There is some uneasy feelings where Nash is trying to take control of things as Wallstreet claims that this situation isn't good as he walks off. As Nash claims , your either with us or against us.

Back in Villano IV delivers a nice side kick to the gut. He then misses a back moonsault off the top turnbuckle. Psychosis delivers a super kick and that sets up his high flying leg drop off the top rope. We get replay of some nice big moves from the guys. As the announcers spend time wondering if there is problems in the NWO.

Gene Okerlund waits in ring as the music hits for the 13 time NWA/WCW World Champion , Ric Flair. Who comes out strutting down the aisle. The fans in Roanoke love Flair as he starts off with a long Meeeaaan Gene. Then pops for the name of Roanoke , Virginia. They bring up Roddy Piper as his music hits. Piper is dressed in wrestling gear so it appears he's gonna work tonight. As fans pop huge for this.

Flair proclaims that Hot Rod is in the house. Piper playfully checks Flair's ears and says he's been fibbing again like Pinocchio. Then makes a joke that none of Flair's girlfriends has ever said his waterbed is like the dead sea. Okerlund playfully jokes about that line with Piper. Then we get an eye to spot where Flair tells him he's glad he brought his RV off the mountain , and humbled his Hollywood ass for the folks of Roanoke. Piper pipes in to claim he's glad to be here.

Then we get the friendship of how long they traveled as Flair brings up his old pals partying and how Mongo can't measure to it. But he admits , he deserves the cheap shots because Piper's a best friend. Then we see Flair bring up how Piper never gets the claim to fame for being the best wrestler. But he sure can put those kids under the table when it comes to being the man outside the squared circle. Flair then brings up how Piper has accomplished a lot of things in territories the last decade and then brings up he put Hogan to sleep twice ! Stop checking those guns when he came to WCW , he's a great one and he don't wanna be put to sleep by him !

Piper cuts a promo that him and Flair have fought against each other and been friends together in that span. Tonight lets stand together and instead of arguing , lets stand and fight the whole NWO together in a blaze of glory ! Flair makes em turn off the music and claims that they will do that tonight and by the way , brings a young girl to be with the Hot Rod. She wears an ICON shirt as they all do a weird river dance together and leave.

After the commercial and replay of Savage taking out DDP , La Parka is out with another weird costume deal. This week he has a huge skull like robe . He's facing Prince
Iaukea for the TV Championship. Iaukea runs out so quick , his music doesn't play til he gets in ring and does his poses. The match starts off quick as Parka does a weird flip into the corner and misses . Then seconds later turns the tide and does a quick run to the corner and does a moonsault which the Prince and him botch as Shiavone quickly calls that La Parka somehow landed on his back in a way where the Prince went to duck it.

The Prince charges him and eats a power slam for that. La Parka does a body splash where he lands with his back on him. Seconds later does a moonsault onto him and gets a 2 count ! Parka stays in control til he charges the corner and misses. Smashing his shoulder into the ring post as he walks around outside. Iaukea does a backwards double ax smash to him off the apron. This match gets more wild as he throws Iaukea into the ring railing.

In a nice spot , La Parka puts the Prince in a chair outside. Then back in ring runs and suicide dives through the ropes in a flying body splash onto Iaukea . Back in ring the Prince tries to rally back later , then misses his flying body splash. After being thrown out seconds later , La Parka takes a steel chair and props it against the recovering Iaukea as he's outside the ring and does a baseball slide into it. Comically the chair starts to fall as the Prince clearly reaches and puts the chair back up in that spot !

Suddenly the bell rings as the announce team are stunned at this as the referee is making a 10 count as the match continues. Shiavone brings up that someone rang the bell by mistake (likely believing the baseball slide spot was a DQ). La Parka back in ring is working as the Prince delivers a nice side kick and all. La Parka is getting up and grabs the chair as the Prince comes off the top turnbuckle with a flying body splash , getting the win. The chair smashes into La Parka's face as the Prince wins a wild quick match !

After a plug for WCW Saturday Night , we get to see the man who will face Prince Iaukea in a rematch for the TV Championship. Its Lord Steven Regal as he taunts the peasants for booing him. Now that J. Edger Bischoff has been suspended , he gets his title match. He blames the dumb dwarf , Rey Mysterio Jr. That after he defeats the Prince , he's gonna get his hands on you sunshine .

Coming down to face Regal is Chris Jericho as we hear how close he is to super stardom. That he's came close for the US title and TV Championship before. The fans start a loud USA Chant to get under the skin of Regal. This starts off with some nice mat wrestling as Regal and Jericho work through reversals off the mat and do some arm bars. Jericho delivers a nice lariat and flying spin wheel kick. Then seconds later does a spring board drop kick , knocking his Lordship to the floor off the apron !

Jericho is on a roll and delivers the Lionsault off the ropes and goes for the pin attempt. Regal is stunned at this and finally shoves Jericho off the rope to get the advantage . He makes Chris eat knees to the face . Regal tries a weird cobra clutch type lariat as Chris dukes and then manages a weird roll up for the win ! This stuns Regal as he reacts in anger post match beating Jericho down. Delivering a double arm super plex off the top rope. Then delivers a pile driver on him , locking in the Regal stretch to make him pay.

Out comes the Renegade who smartly backs off from Regal. Standing there as Joe Gomez tries to pull Regal off. He eats a suplex for that as Renegade saves his partner. Out comes Billy Kidman who eats some fists and a lariat clothesline as he falls outta the ring. Lenny Lane appears and gets thrown out as Jericho continues to take a beat down from him. The hour ends with that .

The 2nd hour begins as the announce team play up the problems with the NWO. Replaying the segment from earlier tonight where Nash tries to bring everyone together for tonight. Then we see Flair/Piper's segment.

After that we go and see that Wallstreet has suddenly decided to leave the arena. The music hits and its weird one for Debbie Combs who had a long history at this point in pro wrestling. She turned pro at 16 and was in her late 30's at this point. Having been involved with Randy Savage back in the 1970's in his fathers promotion. She has retired from the business and works as a police officer in Tennessee.

Combs is competing for the WCW Ladies Championship tonight against Akira Hokuto. Sonny Oonoo is out with her. They bring up how his interference helped her become the champion defeating Madusa. Heenan discusses Combs and her mother being friends of his and how Zsa Zsa Gabor calls the Combs for beauty tips.Debbie is caught with some back kick outta nowhere by Hokuto , choking her in the ropes with her boot. Then bridges her in the ropes and stands on some of her face. As the referee is distracted , she gets flap jacked by Oono .

Debbie finally counters Akira and delivers a back side suplex on her. Taking some brief control. Akira counters off the ropes and delivers a hard stiff kick to Combs chest. Then locks her in a German suplex into a bridge for the pin fall. Post match Hokuto picks up Oono and holds him up as he shows off the WCW Women's championship title.

On the ramp is Madusa , who is being interviewed by Gene Okerlund. In it she gets a cheap pop by discuss the Roanoke Rapids , then goes to discuss Akira Hokuto and their title match ahead this Sunday. Outta nowhere Akira attacks her as they start to brawl on the ramp as Okerlund gets outta dodge comically. Then we see the ladies from earlier try and keep them apart. Debbie Combs tries to hold Madusa back as she charges and tries to bring her down. Sonny Oono tries getting some licks in and eats a kick from Combs as Madusa takes after him to end this.

The fans chant for Heenan after the commercial as they discuss Sting and how he helped WCW at Uncensored weeks earlier. They then air a Sting vignette package of him from the past few years where Sting wore bright colored outfits and then last year where the NWO made folks think Sting betrayed them. Then the black and white Sting who would soon take out the NWO at Uncensored.

We get a replay of how High Voltage defeated the Public Enemy due to help from the Horsemen. The team will now face the Steiner Brothers tonight. Coming to the ring is the Amazing French Canadians with Robert Parker. They are facing Jeff Jarrett and Mongo McMichaels in tag team action. The AFC now wear French Canadian flag type shirts to show where they are from. Jacques starts to sing the national anthem with Carl Ouellet.

This leads into a history lesson from Shiavone who brings up that they should sing the Virginia song , "Carry me back to old Virgini" . The match starts off as Mongo starts working over the arm of Ouellet. Jarrett is in as he comically catches Rougeau from catching him off the ropes with a kick. Then struts as Ouellet waits on the spot , waits and then charges as does Jacques . Carl catches his partner with a clothesline as Mongo delivers a drop kick to Ouellet where the announcers believe it shows how far Mongo has came. Yes...a drop kick.

The AFC catches Jarrett with some heel double teams and Jeff seconds later delivers a pin point drop kick. Making the hot tag to Mongo who delivers his 3 point stance tackle as Mongo works in ring. Outta the back comes the Public Enemy who want payback. They brawl with Jarrett and take the briefcase. Then lose it just as quick to Robert Parker. Who throws it in to Jacques . The referee is distracted with Jarrett and the Public Enemy on the other side. So they lay out Mongo with a stiff shot , getting the win.

Post match a very angry Mongo isn't happy where he was laid out by the loaded briefcase. Debra tries to plead her case , lying she was trying to take up for Jarrett. She ended up breaking 2 nails due to this. Then she does her catchphrase where she claims Johnny has bad breath and Rocco has head lice. Mongo gets on the mic and is angry as he stomps the mat in front of Jarrett.

Lee Marshall is in Huntsville , Alabama for next weeks Nitro with 1-800 collect. After this segment we see Hugh Morrus come out with Jimmy Hart. Out comes Chris Benoit with Woman who looks like dynamite in a blue revealing dress. We get a replay on the side screen where Benoit was jumped by the Dungeon of Doom. As the match starts , Morrus beings the match quick , jumping him.
