They should have just made Thor female. Like literally turned him into a girl. That could have been an interesting story with some commentary about how Asgardians view women, etc.
That or have Freya or some other actual character pick up the hammer. Even a new character, but a real character not a "mystery".
In norse mythology gender changing was a real thing, so I agree they could have just turned him into a female because then they would have the option of shifting back at a later date, that said I am thoroughly enjoying the whole concept
