Yeah, that really got to me too. I actually cried. It was the most morbid death probably in Marvel comics history. And it happened to someone so young. My young self was shocked.

I was also shocked by the death of Jean Grey. Though, I was too young to read it in its original run I read it in Classic X-Men. It actually affected me. Before I raed comics I didn't think much of them but I was shocked that comics could be that way and could touch you so much.

Anyway, my pick is Nightcrawlers sacrifice in 'Second Coming'. Kurt wasn't a fave among editorial at the time and it was all about Cyclops and Wolverine. They were using him less and less and it was only a matter of time. I actually thought they wouldn't bring him back and that's what made it really hurt.

Outside of comics, I would say the "death" of Larry Talbot in House of Frankenstein. This was early '71 and just starting to watch those old horror films when I caught the first pairing of the Frankenstein Monster, Dracula, and the Wolf Man. This was the first time I saw the latter and while he scared me like no other screen fiend had up to then or would later do so in the future, it was impossible not to feel sympathy for him since he couldn't control his change into a werewolf. When Marcus Welby's nurse kills him near the end, while I knew it had to happen, it still saddened five-year-old me. Only later on I found out monsters died and were resurrected constantly in films years before characters in comics did it.

I was 8 or 9 when Gwen Stacy died. I couldn't believe it. Superheroes never failed, and they especially weren't possibly even partially responsible for their supporting players demise.

I am also still pissed they let Kevin Smith kill Karen Page.

The death of Kathy in the Vertigo Shade the Changing Man hit me hard.

The first characters I remember being deceased were Ferro Lad and Gwen Stacy, but I came after the fact for both of them. Regarding Gwen, I started reading Spidey when her clone was running around town. I must have had a thing for platinum blondes back then because both her and Lucy Lane were my first comic-book crushes for their respective companies.

Yeah. Especially Yorick's reaction. The death of animals can sometimes affect us more than the death of humans. As an example, I would cite We Three. (And it doesn't even have to be their death. Those "missing" posters in that comic tore me up.)
