True, and the subject of his art would definitely not be Felicia...
There's still room for sexy. The problem is the people who make it out to be all that matters in a (usually) female character. There's a slight but profound difference between "aesthetically pleasing" and "just there for LCD (lowest common denominator) titillation."
The spider is always on the hunt.
Marvel should honestly just stop working in extremes, around the 2000's there was a lot of fanservice that reached obnoxious levels at times, hell, there's a cover in Heroes for Hire that when I opened it I legit briefly thought "Wait, when did I open porn?", it seems that later on they tried to tone it down too much, wonder why it's so damn difficult for them to find a happy middle ground.
Then again, I guess comic books like to work on extremes, DC for example had too fucking many Kryptonians, then after the Crisis they wanted only one, to the point they retconned Power Girl into a time traveling Atlantean, geez lol.
Felicia is in the gray area where she can do far more than sexy in her sleep and yet at the same time she can be so much more than that, they just have to let her be both somehow...
Exactly. I think another part of the problem is the Madonna/whore complex that afflicts so much of our society and culture, that women or female characters that are "sexy" or perceived as such get pigeonholed into that role and aren't "allowed" to be anything else because no one wants or cares to see that there are deeper thoughts, deeper desires, deeper ideas and feelings behind a "sexy" presentation. Then, thanks to the inherent hypocrisy of the Madonna/whore complex, women and/or female characters that are (perceived as) "sexy" are condemned and lambasted for having "nothing else" to offer when nobody's actually bothered trying to ask and see for themselves, creating a vicious cycle.

The spider is always on the hunt.
There is a similar cycle with some male characters though, the really tough ones like Wolverine they always have the in essence Madonna romantic interest that is a saint but that needs to be protected and isn't a fighter and until the times comes that said male character hangs up his gun or sword or whatever the pairing will either never happen or she'll always be in danger, meanwhile the guy dates one string of "sexy badass babes" after another, great looking and really sexy but never going to be the take her home to momma kind of woman, stereotype if you want it to be, so the guy gets a string of romantic or possible romantic interests that land in the sexy category before finally retiring and ending up with the Madonna romantic interest, not Madonna the singer but the more religious view of Madonna...
But I get your point Huntsman...almost think that if allowed Felicia and MJ could be great friends, always had an idea for Felicia/Peter/MJ...the 3 of them together where Felicia would still travel the world and such but it would allow Peter to really be both Peter and Spider-Man, if Peter was out fighting crime Felicia could be there with him watching his back so MJ wouldn't worry as much not that MJ is a wimp either and Felicia wouldn't always have to do the opposite either when she was in town...then gain my idea of the three of them includes their daughters and how they'd be but...
As I don't remember if MJ and Felicia ever really got along for very long...
And then an Earth born angel, who was at first merged with this shape shifter, and then Superman's possible daughter from the future, then we got Kara herself, who had some really dumb retcons (Like saying she was sent to Earth to kill Supes 'cause her father was an edgy douche), but she at least stayed Kryptonian.
They had a few moments after 90's decided to treat her better, but unfortunately those were few, then OMD happened and chances are Felicia doesn't even remember MJ exists anymore.
I guess then it'd mean that the next writer to have them interact could/would have a clean slate between them...
Wasn't there a small bit after the Back in Black Cat story where they met for lunch or something? I haven't read it myself but I recall hearing about ut.
Well if they did I don't think that would keep them from being friends but again not expecting anything great Luk...
All that could mean then is that there's plenty of room for development if a writer actually cared to do it...and they could still be rivals in many senses, just not bitter rivals...
