In her current costume, Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel wears a retractable cowl covering the upper half her face. Being that this is a superhero comic world, Rogue or M wearing one like it will have the public and any close personal friends utterly convinced that they're Danvers.

I think if one has to explain to someone else how Rogue might (it's italicized. speak it aloud accordingly) be able to shape-shift in certain circumstances...one might just point this person to Rogue's Wikipedia page and leave it at that.
