Like Tarzan 2, Fox and the Hound 2 etc, yeah, but set before, rather than earlier during, the film.

That's what they did, Disney wise. Not before the film, or after, but earlier in them.

Any reason, rather than following the events of John Wick, you'd rather it be before?

Supposedly, the entire cast was enthusiastically on board to do a sequel and the Wachowski Brothers had a script all ready to go, but the movie didn't do well enough to justify a sequel. That's too bad. I really enjoyed that movie.
