There used to be a page on the internet that had just about every pieta cover ever done. But I haven't been able to find it. There's a Comics Should Be Good page on this, but it doesn't even mention LOIS LANE 128--that page says George Perez was inspired by Kirby's cover for THE MIGHTY THOR 127. That might be true, but I can't believe George wasn't aware of all the others and wasn't being inspired by them just as much as Kirby's work.

The theme of Robin dying goes back to the early days of Batman. Like Cheeks or Kenny, Robin was always getting himself in trouble. The classic story--what deserves to be in comic book heaven, if there's any justice--"The Case of the Honest Cook," BATMAN No. 5 (Spring '41), by Bill Finger, Bob Kane & Jerry Robinson--has the primal scene from whence all others draw their morbid inspiration.

Someone last year was putting together all the FANTASTIC FOUR No. 1 tribute covers of which there are many. And FF No. 1 is itself a tribute to THE BRAVE AND THE BOLD No. 28.

I think this one was one of the first self referencing homages.
Of-course with time/dimension shift being the theme of the cover and a staple of the character, it was bound to reoccur.
