After some anxiety about tackling the legendary character, Matt Wagner found the story that could bring the Spirit to a new audience at Dynamite.

Anything Matt Wagner does always deserves a look.

    I'll be onboard in July.

I agree, but Darwyn Cooke's version was superb. He took some liberties, but I doubt Wagner is going to portray Ebony as he was by Eisner.

Matt Wagner's GH Year One and The Shadow Year One were both phenomenal, as was his work on Grendel years ago. I'm all over this.

One of Wagner's comments bothers me: "That's why he becomes the living Spirit -- because his physical self is gone." I hope he's speaking metaphorically, because Denny Colt's physical self is definitely not gone. He's not a "living Spirit." He's a guy who's presumed dead, but is very much alive. He decides he can fight crime better in the guise of "The Spirit" (such as it is... Eisner often said the character only wears a mask because the syndicate insisted a comic book hero needed one!). I just have a very, very bad feeling about this. Then again, I was never that crazy about the DC Comics version either....

I think he meant "illicit," not "elicit."

They can't find perfect artist for book? There's one great choice... Chris Samnee.
