I just expected him to be around forever, like Jordan/Barkley/Kareem, popping up at all star games in his 60s. Gone, just like that. Really hoping the stories about his daughters dying as well is just a rumor.

I have seen quite a few big celebrities who died way too soon since the '70s and the loss of Kobe is right up there. Just too terrible.

I just saw a Tweet about TMZ reporting a message from Kobe's rep that his daughter, GiGi, age 13, was also in the Helicopter. Too soon to be sure of anything though.

Heard about Kobe while on my way home from the mall. Damn! He was only 41 years old. Just awful.

This is sounding more and more tragic. Kobe was flying his daughter Gianna to her basketball game at Mamba Sports Academy in Thousand Oaks and he was going to coach the team. Orange Coast college basketball coach John Altobelli and his wife and children were also killed.

It's really tough to see a person who was young and still seemingly had some living left ahead of him pass. It's even harder to think of that those kids won't get any older.

Fred Silverman was involved with television for many decades, sometimes making very poor decisions in cancelling highly rated shows because he wanted something different. He had a good life.

Speaking of something different, one of Silverman's most notable failures occurred in 1980 while at NBC when he greenlighted Pink Lady & Jeff, a six episode series that was voted one TV Guide's 50 all-time worse TV shows (in the magazine's 50th year, it placed 34th) and was said to have killed the long running variety show format. Pink Lady were Mitsuyo Nemoto and Keiko Masuda, an uber popular Japanese pop music duo who barely spoke passable English and Jeff Altman, a then (and now) little known stand-up comic, the show was a train wreck with dopey comedy skits, Pink Lady warbling songs and D-list guest stars like Greg Evigan, Red Buttons and Sherman Hemsley. Short and sweet, the show was a mess that's still talked about, and reviled to this day. And it was on Silverman's watch.
