    Aretha Franklin, the ‘Queen of Soul,’ Dies at 76

    Aretha Franklin, universally acclaimed as the “Queen of Soul” and one of America’s greatest singers in any style, died on Thursday at her home in Detroit. She was 76.

    The cause was advanced pancreatic cancer, her publicist, Gwendolyn Quinn, said.

    In her indelible late-1960s hits, Ms. Franklin brought the righteous fervor of gospel music to secular songs that were about much more than romance. Hits like “Do Right Woman — Do Right Man,” “Think,” “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman” and “Chain of Fools” defined a modern female archetype: sensual and strong, long-suffering but ultimately indomitable, loving but not to be taken for granted.

    When Ms. Franklin sang “Respect,” the Otis Redding song that became her signature, it was never just about how a woman wanted to be greeted by a spouse coming home from work. It was a demand for equality and freedom and a harbinger of feminism, carried by a voice that would accept nothing less.

    You can name any female singer from the rock era, Aretha is still going to be #1, IMO. A magnificent voice and the intelligence to know how to use it wisely and effectively.

    RIP

    Okay,
    King = Elvis Presley
    Sultan = Babe Ruth ("Sultan of Swat")

    A few other notable August 16th deaths are:
    * Robert Johnson (1938), "King of the Delta Blues Singers"
    * Bela Lugosi (1956), actor who portrayed Dracula
    * Amanda Blake (1989), played "Miss Kitty" on Gunsmoke

    A bit closer to home, my brother had his dog put down earlier in the week. Good dog. When it comes to pets, it always feels like it's too soon.

    Sorry to hear that... How old was the lil' pooch?

    It's always difficult in cases of prolonged disease to make that decision to end the suffering, but worse still when they're not even that old yet.

    First, thanks for that.

    She was coming up on fifteen. The "Good" was that she got sick last Friday, and it was clear what had to happen(based on the vet's assessment of blood work and looking up other's experience in the same situation) by Tuesday. So while it was tough, it wasn't drawn out. In addition... If you had seen her on the day before that Friday, you would have said "This dog will live another twenty years."
